a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane, State of 5 Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Type-\Vriting Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawings.
Certain principles and features of my invention as described herein are included avithin the generic invention which is de ,scribed and claimed in my copending application filed April 30, 1908, Serial No. 428,212, on which-Letters Patent No. 1,053,- 919 were granted February 18, 1913.
One of the objects of my general invention is to indicate to the operator of a typewvriting machine the distance from the current printing point to one of the ends of the sheet, or to another point on the sheet, and this progressively, and without preliminary care on his part.
An additional object is to supply the operator with one or another type of indicating means whereby a signal is given in an improved manner at a predetermined sheet position.
The present embodiment of my invention is distinguished by various novel features, among them the use of novel electrically controlled indices; the use of glow-lamps to indieate progressive sheet-positions in various novel ways; the use of a paper-feeler o'l' novel construction and having novel actuation both into and out of the paper-path, the use of a novel slant-fated stop, and also of novel means for actuating the saline: and the use of certain no-vcl combinations of ele i meuts adapted to render the invention more useful in practice.

Referring to the dra\vings,-I show only such typewriter parts as are necessary to a full explanation of my invention, certain parts not shown being such as are in conamon use and Well known in the art and not requiring detailed description, as will be understood. At 47 is indicated one end of the shifting platen frame on the usual latorally moving carriage of the machine, in which is journaled platen arbor l3 bearin platen 10, the same beingfixedly attached upon the said arbor by means of platen head 39 in usual manner. The platen as consiob cred herein is the principal feed-roll for advanciug the sheet; and it is rotated by usuai linespace mechanism oi any approved type. The usual twirler 50 fOIXJ IIdIEPQHdBIIlS rotation of the platen is shown. At 8 is the usual paper-table for the support of the entering sheet.
The embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings comprises an operative mom her journaled on platen arbor 13 so as to revolve thereon irulependcntly ol the platen. Said member '3 is in form a drum or indexcarrier. having (Fig. 3) a rim portion, an upstanding portion. and a hub or bushing portion. Rotating loosely within the contour thereof is a driving element 11, the same being fixedly attached upon platen head 39 to revolve therewith. W'ithin the contour of part 11 is friction-ring I. preferal'ly constructed of resilient material, and having a tendency to expand radially into frictional contact \vithpart 11 so as to be driven thereby said parts 1] and T constituting the driving and driven elements respectively of a convenient form of clutch uujchanism. Said ring 7 bears adetcnt or pin i-l, preferably -near one end as shown. The hull: portion recessed to reeeive the tip portion, and a lug portion 28 of said tip porti n bears against the butt, thereby limiting the action of lllC tip on the butt, and holding the parts so that a straight line drawn through the prin ipal eeler-axis at 20 and. the paper controlled feelertip will pass slightly to the paper side of the axis at :23 and a straight line drawn through said axes 20 and 23 w ill intersect the first line at an angle. Segments ll and 15 are however not employed. Frame 47 has journaled therein the inwardly extending rock-shaft 20. Said rock-shaft on the outer side of said frame bears the fixedlyattached lever and inwardly of said frame the stop 1o 15 and feeler-butt 28 are fixedly attached as before described inconnection with Figs. 1 and '3, both stop and paper-feeler having the same construction as before. Instead of the usual laten-twirler, a twirler 50 15 loosely jonrna ed on the platen arbor is used, having an inwardly extending bushing or sleeve-portion 52 and radially outward thereof an inwardly extending sleeve portion with a space between the two for the reception of a. contracting spring 51.. Sleeve portion of said twirler has a short slot 55 therein, underneath which is -a hole 50" adapted to receive the bent-in 'end of spring 51. A bent-out end of said 5 spring'passes throu'gh a hole in sleeve portion 51- of the twirler. The twirler is thus held in operative position laterally on the platen-arbor by the spring-ends, and has a limited rotative movement opposite to 30 line-spncc direction against the action of the spring. Fixedly attached upon said twirler is pulley 15 A light cord or belt 111* encircles the pulley. the ends of which are attached to either arni of lever 13 in such manner that when the pulley is actu-- atcd in line-space direction shaft 21') is rocked to press 'paper-feeler 28 toward the paper-path, and when actuated in opposite direction paper-fceler 28 is retracted toward 40 the platen. Said belt is adapted to slip frictionally upon said pulley, the engagem'ent therewith being only suflicient to actuate rock-shaft 30' and its parts. Spring 51 is sufficiently strong, to actuate said pul ley against the friction of the belt. but is not strong enough to rotate the platen. l. in a typewriting machine. in combination, a platen, a plurality of electrical cir cuits. means controlled by the sheet for closing a given circuit when the end of the sheet attains one distance from the printing point and closing another given circuit when the end of the short attains another distance from the printing point, and a plurality of glow-lamps for said circuits each havin a distinguishable'position relatively to t 0 others.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, an operative member, means for giving said member a constant starting position, means for 'ving said member movement with the paten at a predetermined line position, one or more electrical circuits under the control of said member, uncl n glow'lamp in one or more of the said circuits.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, an operat ve member, indicating means called into operation through said member, frictional connectingmeans between said member and the platen including a s lit ring and a cofipcrat-ing member upon w iich said ring presses frictionally, the said members mounted in radial relation to each other, and a sheet-controlled stop for controlling the movement of said member with the platen.
15. In a. typewri'tin machine, in combination, a platen, an in ex-carrier bearing indices, frictional operating means for said carrier including a discontinuous or split member and a cooperating engaging memher mounted in radial relation to each other,
