UNDERGARMENT.
APPLIGATIO FILED DEU.1'7,1912.

WITNESSES- UNITED STATES OFFICE.
KEEVA SEGAL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
UNDEBGARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 17, 1912.
To allic/mm it may concern Be it known that I, Kin-1m SEC-AL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadel )hia. State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and useful Undcrgarment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an undergarmeut particularly of the order of union garments and consists in providing the crotch of the drawers thereof with a gore of knitted fabric which is elastic or resilient in comparison to the fabric of which the body of the drawers is composed, the same being constructed and possessing advantages as will be hereinafter .set forth, and its novelty pointed out in the claim.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanyin" drawing, but the important instrument-a ities thereof may be \aried, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arran ment and organization shown and dc sen Figure 1 represents a front elevation of an undergarment embodyin my invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear e ovation of a portion thereof. Fi 3 represents a plan view of the gore emp oyed. Fig. 4 represents a longitu inal section of a portion on line w-a: Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a front view of a portion of the arment, the gore having been removed there rom. Fig. 6 represents a lon- 'tudinal section of a portion on line yy gimilar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates a garment known as union underwear, the same being composed of the undershirt portion 2 and drawers portion 3, which ortions are made of fabric comparatively inelastic as usual in such cases. The fabric of the drawers portion is separated at the crotch from the top 4 of the same downwardly to the oints 6 on the inner sides of the le portion 6, and the edges of the separated portion are cut-away in .ipwardl curved direction forming arches 7 of said edges on both the front and rear of the drawers at the crotch and portions below the same. In said arches, I insert a gore 8 which is composed of a piece of knitted fabric folded upwardly at its center line the fold bridgin from one point 5 to the other at the bases 0 the arches, the edges of the gusset being sewed or Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Serial No. 737.1'82.
stitched to the edges of said arches 7, thus joining the front and rear pieces of the drawers at the crotch and portions below the same, and closing the gap occasioned by primarily separating said pieces and bringing the bottom fold of the gusset in contact with the crotch of the wearer and the sides of the gusset in contact with the sides of the upper portions of the legs of the wearer, so that the gusset presents a soft fabric to said places of contact preventing chafing or other discomfiture thereat, and the gusset yields freely in all directions due to the motions of the wearer avoiding material strain on the gusset and adjacent portions of the garment. Attention is directed particulartt to the fact that the gore, and consequently the edges of the separations of the crotch, and adJacent portions of the legs, curve downwardly from the crowns of said gore to the side edges of the bottom fold thereof. thus conforming to the anatomy of the body of the wearer at the places of occupation of the gore and drawers in gentle and continuous curves, thus preventing 'severe buckling of the fabric at said places, and avoiding chafing or other discomfiture in the wearing of the garment at the places indicated as above stated.
The inner sides of each leg 6 are stitched together and so closed from the points 5 to the bottoms 9 of the legs as is evident. It will be noticed that the stitches of said sides and edgcsof the gore and those of the separated edges of the crotch extend in the direction of thearch. meet at the legs 6 at the terminals of the bottom fold of the gore, and said stitches continue downwardly to the bottoms 9 of the legs as has been stated. The front opening piece or band 10 of the garment extends down to the crotch and the lower end of said band overlaps the top edge of the front crown of the gore as at 11, and said crown is stitched to the overlapping portion of the band. which latter thus acts as a hanger for the front wall of the ore at the crown thereof and provides a reinforced connection for the gore with the crown of the front arch to the crotch of the drawers, thus enabling the crown of the gore to endure the severe upward strain of the garment to which it is subjected at its crotch. Then, the hem 12 of the rear opening of the garment is continued downwardly so as to overlap the top of the rear crown of the gusset as at 13, and stitched to said crown, acts as a hunger for the rear wall f the gore at the crown thereof and serrthe and to-the lower edges of therjiaps, present invention is differentiated from the patent aforesaid in the various particulars ingalso as a, reinforce for the connection for the re with-the rear arch of the crotch of fi i'ewers for the same purpose as at the front arch.
.I- ameware that it has heretofore been proposed in the atent to Clarke, No. 1 035,819, patented ugust 13th, 1912, to em ploy a buttoned flap and an elastic knitted triangular or other shaped fabric extending well up in thefront of the garment and ex tending down the leg seamsto form a laterally elastic closed crotch that is firmly sewed to the front of the garment, the leg) seams at my ereinbefore recited, and hereinafter pointed out in the claini, aswill be evident to those skilled in the art. I am also aware that it has been roposcd also to employ a triangu- -lar or 0t ershaped elastic or non elastic crotch piece in the crotch portion of nether common right to employ a crotch piece of the character described, I do not herein make any claim for the same, 7161' se, but only claim the same in combination with the other novel features of my invention, and to none of the constructions of the prior art, do I herein make my claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A garment embodying drawers having the crotch thereof and adjacent portions of the legs thereof separated and cut-away, the edges of the separations being of the form of an arch, a gore of the character stated having a fold at the bottom, and its top and sides of the form of an arch, the side and top edges of the gore being stitched to the edges of said separations of the drawers, a band on the front of the rment, the same being extended downwar l y to said crotch and overlapping the crown of the front wall of said gore and being stitched thereto, and a hem on the rear of the garment, the same being extended downwardly to said crotch and overlapping the crown of the rear wall of said gore and being stitched thereto.
