NELSON FULCI-IER, or SAUL'I srE; MAR E, ONTARIO, CANADA.
TRAOK-LINING ARCH.
resident of Sault'Ste. Marie, Province of O11tar10,Dom1n1on of Canada, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements 1n Track-Lining Arche s, of which'the following is a specification. y
This invent1on relates to alinement ad]ust-' ing mechanisms adapted to be used on railway tracks and the objects of theinvention are to facilitate in the adjusting of the alinetrack to another, to permit of both rails of the track being simultaneously adjusted in either lateral direction, to simplify and reduce the number of worln'ng parts of the I mechanism, and generally to adaptthe several parts to better perform the functions required of them and it consists essentially of the improved construction of mechanism particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming apart of the same.v
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective .view of the improved ad usting mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the arch showing the manner of fixing the same to the railway track. I
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several drawings.
Referring to the drawings A represents a railway track with. the improved adjusting mechanism B mountcd thereon, such rail way tracks being of usual constructionand well known in the art require no furtherdescription.
The mechanism B comprises the arch 1 which is substantially of inverted U-shape in cross section, such arch having orifices 2, 3 and 4 extending through its upper side and being provided with transversely extending brackets 5, and 6 mounted on the ends thereof and preferably formed integral therewith, such brackets terminating .in bifurcated ends 7 and 8 having orifices therethrough. Transverse members 9 and 10 extend between the lateral parallel sides of the arch 1 and are formed integral therewith, such members being adapted to form with the under face of the transversely extending brackets 5 and 6 suitable slots 9 and 10 the object of which will be made clear hereafter.
The arch 1 is provided with orifices 11 ex- Specifieation of Letters Patent. Application filed June 25, 1914. Seria1No.-847,300.
and 8,, such wheels being adapted to engage with the rails of the .saidItrack.
To facilitate in] securing the arch 1 in a desired fixed position. on the trackfwedge Patented o et. 2c, 1914. 1
i With which the pin 12 is designed to engage, q
with wheels 14 and 15 rotatably mounted on the bolts16 and 17 in the bifurcated ends? members 18 are provided which slidably engage with the slots 9 and 10*, such wedge members being pivotally mounted on the lower end of one of the arms of the cranks 19 which; are rotatably mounted in the parallelsides of the said arch, such cranksbemg rigidly connected to the lower end of the links 20, the upper ends of such links being pivotally attached to one end of the connect, mg rods-21,the other end of saidconnecting rods being pivotally connected to the lever" 22, whichis inturn pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends on the arch 1, the said connecting rods engaging with the said le'-; yver on opposlte s des of the fulcrum thereof.
It is frequently found expedient to adjust" the gripping of the wedge members 18 and to this end the connecting rods 21 are made in two portions having, the adjacent ends provided with right and left handed threads respectively with which the couplings 23 ,are designed to engage.
A. U-shaped bracket 24: is suitably' fixed to the arch. l and designed to embrace the dog 26 is pivotally mounted. Y
21 represents a jack which is of any art need not further be enlarged upon.
vThe operation of the device is as follows: The arch 1 is placed over the track with the wheels 14 and 15.engagingtherails, the said '90 lever 22, such bracket being provided with an upwardly extending arm 25 to which the.
arch being then pushed along the track toia' point at which the alinement is to be adjusted, when the lever 221is operated causing the I wedge members 18 to simultaneously engage with the underside of the railhead, the said lever being then locked in position by the dog 26 which is rotated to engage with the edge thereof. The ]ack 27 is now placed in position with the base engaging thetrack bed and the upper end of the jackscrew enf gaging with the socket 13 whereupon when are then securely ballasted to the track bed.
When the alinement of one section of the track has been completed the dog 26 is disengaged from the lever 22 which is then operated'to simultaneously release the wedge members 18 thereby rendering the arch capable of being moved to another section of the track.
T 0 obviate the disengaging of the jack 27 each time an operation has been performed and the arch is to be moved to another section of the track, a chain or caption member 28 is provided which is secured at one end to the arch, the other end of the said chain being utilized to hitch up the jack clear of the track so permitting of the arch when thewedge members 18 are released being freely: transferred from section to section.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my inven-. tion, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
