This invention relates to machines for inserting into thework a series of fasteners which are severed from a continuous strip of stock as fast as they are. driven. The form herein shown and described is adapted to that type of shoe machine known as slugger and with slight modification might be used for other classes of work in the manufacture of shoes. The object of the present invention is to provide a machine of the character referred to which will be capable of operating at high speed without detracting from eiiiciency and accuracy, and which will be simple and durable in construction and not liable to minor accidents.
in accomplishing these objects of the invention, I dispense with the complicated feeding mechanisms that have heretofore been employed, provide for the various operative parts being actuated with easy or graduated movements so as to prevent rocking of the machine, and employ simple mechanisms for securing the driving and severing of the fasteners and the feeding of the work.
in the embodiment of the invention which l have illustrated upon the drawings, the fasteners are formed from a metallic strip such as a piece of wire, and the-workis fed by laterally moving the embedded end of the strip, after which. said embedded end is severed; by cutters from the remainder of the strip. The driver takes the form of a" bar which is reciprocated and which is, mounted upon a laterally oscillatory head so" to have a lateral work-feeding movement at its strip-delivering end.

The contacting faces of both halves of the driver-bar are grooved along their median line, forming an orifice for the passage therethrough of a continuous strip 50, shown on the drawings as circular wire and suppliedfrom areel 51 on a bracket '52 attached to the standard 10. The strip 50 is driven successively step by step toward and into the work, is oscillated laterally to feed. the work, and the driven portion severed therefrom after having been moved'laterally to feed the work. In passing through the driver-bar the strip 50'engages successively a pair ofstraightemng dles 53, 53, a pair of grippers 54, 54 and a split driver 55 having a tubular delivery nozzle 56. (See Figs. 2 and 4:.) Of the dies 53, 53 one is aiiixed to one half of the driver-bar, and the other die is-movably installed between the halves and adapted to be adjusted by means of a set screw 58 threaded in the bar. v p The driver (see Figs. 4c. 5 and 7) comprises the member 55 havingthe delivery nozzle 56 and a separate removable member 59 loosely fitted uponlaterally extending dowels 4L0, 40. The confronting faces of the members 55 and59 are grooved for the receptionof the strip 50 and constitute gripping jaws by reason of having'teethi formed by a series of annular grooves 41..
The driver is installed in a chamber 155 formed in the driver-bar 35 and is actuated by means hereinafter described to grip the strip 50 during the downward movement and to release the strip during the upward movement of the bar. I
The head 15 is oscillated about the shaft 20 by-a lever 42 pivoted upon a stud 43 in a boss on the standard 10. One end of said lever is provided with a roll 1% which cooperates with a cam groove 4e5in the disk 34, and the other end of the lever is provided with a curved slot 46containing the head of an adjustable stud 47. One end of a link 48 is pivoted upon the stud afland the other end upon a stud 1-9 in the head 15, thus forming an adjustable connection between the lever and the head by which the head may be oscillated through an arc of any desired length. A flange 60 on the upper face of the plate 1'? occupies a peripheral groove 61 in the bottom of the head and serves to guide and brace the latter.
When the machine is at rest or in normal position the driverbar 35 is raised andthe head 15 isperpendicular as shown in Fig. 2. When the head is in this position the loose member 59 of the driver is forced toward the member 55 by a bar 62 movably installed in a laterally extending guide formed by protuberances 63, 63 on the bar 35. (See also Fig. 6.) One end of the bar 62 abuts against the member 59 and the other end abuts against a perpendicular face of a fixed bracket 64 extending from a standard 10. On the opposite side of the driver, an adjustable abutment 66 in the form of a set screw, and threaded in the head 15, acts through an intermediate block to brace the driver against the thrust of pressed by the cam 39, the bar 62 and block '65, which cause the driver members 55 and 59 to grlp the strip 50, slide relatively to the parallel faces of the bracket and setscrew without relinquishing their pressure upon the driver. The lower end of the driver-bar 35 in being depressed enters an orifice 67 formed in the plate 17 to allow it to approach closely to the work 100 on the 'ack. l
J The delivery nozzle56 of the driver projects slightly below the driver-bar so that when bothare depressed the end of the nozzle barely touches the work and if the end of the strip extends below the end of the nozzle it. is driven into the work. The cam39 is so formed that, after causing the driving of the end of the strip 50 into the work, it holds the driver bar motionless relatively to the head 15 for an instant during which the cam 15 causes the lever 42 to swing the head to the left, thus advanc ing the work, through the agency of the strip 50. Fig. 4 shows the head moved to the latter position. It will be observed that the bar 62 instead of moving laterally with the head is held by the bracket 64 whichhas a perpendicular groove 68 into which a roller 69 on the bar extends.
The chamber. 155' which contains the driver members is so formed as to permit a slight longitudinal movement of the latter therein for a purpose hereinafter explained, andwhen the bar 62 is in engagement with the driver it overlaps an inelinedsho'ulder 70 formed on the member 59 thus preventinga heel, the members 55and59 the driver from rising in the chamber during the driving of the strip 50. As shown in Fig.4, however,.the bar 62 is disengaged from'the member 59 to permit the seven ance of the driven fastener from the strip, to which the following description refers.

The foregoin explanation covers the entire operation of the fastener driving mechanism, but, in describing the workfeeding mechanism the following explanation of the jack depressing mechanism is necessary. Referring to Figs. 1, 11, 12 and 13, is an'actuating cam aflixed upon the shaft 20 and cooperating with a roll 86 carried by a lever 37 fulcrumed uponv a stud 83 on the stazidardlO. The free end of the lever 87 is connected by a pin to the upper end of a vertically movable rod 891nounted in suitable hearings on the standard. The lower end of said rod extends loosely through ahole 91 in one end of a block and is provided with. a 'nut- 92 threaded thereon. d
93 is a rod extending parallel to and close to the rod 89 and having suitable bearings adapted to permit parallel movement thereof. The rod extends loosely through a hole 94- in the block 90 and is provided with a helical spring 95 compressed. between said block and the bearing 96. The rod 93 also extends loosely through a hole ,97 in a block 98 connected by a pin 99 to the other end of and extending underneath .the block 90. When in normal position the spring 95 pressing on the block 90 holds itagainst the block 98 and the latter against a fixed stop v 101. The lower end of the rod 93 ispivotally connected to cne end of a lever l02which is fulcrumed upon the'standard 10 by a stud 103. The other end of the lever extends between two lips 10 1,10 1 of a collar 105 se cured upon the jack 12. Afterthe driving of a fastener into the work, and prior to the lateral feeding of the work the cam 85 causes the lever 37 to raise the rod'89. The nut on said rod engages the under side of the block 90 and raises one end thereof, the other end being held down bythe spring Byreason of the loose fit of the rods in the holes 91 and 9a, the block 90 turns on the pin 99 and assumes an angle. as shown in F 1g. 11. This causesthe opposite edges of the hole 9% to take hold upon the rod 93 and continued upward movement. of the block causes it to move bodily and to carry the rod 93 with it. Theblock 98 has an car 106 which is connected by a spring 107 to a fixed member 108 below it, and as the block 90 rises bodily, raising the pivoted end of the block 93, the downward tension of said spring causes the latter block to assume an angle relatively to the rod 93. The opposite edges of the hole 97 then take hold upon the'rod 93 and during the remainder of the upward movement of the rod 89, the blocks 90 and 9S and the rod 93 move therewith as a unit. The movement thus given to the rod 93 is transmitted to the lever 102 which depresses the jack against the pressure of the spring 14. The jack is held in the lower position by the cam thus relieving the pressure of the work against the plate 17 while the cam 15 actuates the head '15 to feed the work. It is while the jack is unlocked'that the cutters sever the driven slug. When the blocks 90 and 98 are returned to normal position by the spring 95, the holes 94 and 97 become alined so that the rod 93 may slide relatively thereto when the jack is depressed by means of the treadle 18. Power for rotating the shaft 20 is applied to pulley 110 loosely mountedon the rear end of the shaft. Said pulley normally rotates idly about-the shaftbut has a plate 111 containa ing one or more holes 112 which is adapted to engage a bolt 113 contained in a casing 114: mounted upon and attached to the shaft.
A spring 115 tends to force the bolt into operative engagement with the pulley but it is normally held out of engagement therewith by a wedge shaped flange 116 formed on a block 117 pinned to one end of a plunger 118. Said plunger is adapted to slide in a bracket 119 on the standard 10 and its other end is connected by a rod 120 to a lever 121 fulcrumed upon the stud 19 upon which the treadle 18is also fulcrumed. The
flange 116 is normally held in engagement with a nose 122 on the bolt by a spring 123 i of which one end is attached to the standard and the other to a collar 124 on the rod 120.
The rear end ofa treadle 125 fulcrumed upon a pm 126 underlies the free end of the lever 121. and. when depressed it rocks .127 and 128, 128. The rotation of the casingtransmitted from the pulley by the bolt is in turn transmitted through rubber blocks to the collar 129 and thence to the shaft 20. The blocks serve to absorb the sudden shock of starting the shaft and continue to rotate the same as long as the flange 116 is held out ofthe path of rotation of the nose 122.

Said brake-shoe is mounted upon a lug 135 projecting from the block and engages a liange 188 forms on the periphery of casing.

What I claim is 1. In a machine of the character described, a driver bar, a driver thereon comprising a nozzle and complemental gripping members connected to said nozzle, said driver as a unit being longitudinally movable a small distance relatively to the driver, meanspfor imparting a fourflvay movement to the driver bar, an automatic cutter mechanism for the fastener, and means for actuating the gripping members to causethem to grip the fastener while the driver bar is moved toward the work, and to release the fastener while the driver bar is being moved laterally, whereby the nozzle and grippers may be moved away from the work to permit the operation of the cutter.

A machine of the character specified, comprising a longitudinally reciprocatory driver having a clamp member movable transversely to engage and clamp fastener strip, means for longitudinally reciprocating said driver, a slide for actuating said clamp member, said slide and said driver being transversely.movable one relatively to the other, and means by which said relative movement 1s effected.
16. A machine of the character specified adapted to drive and severfasteners from a continuous strip, comprisingv an oscillatory head, fastener-driving and fastener-severing mechanisms all mounted upon and carried by said head, means for actuating said mechanisms to cause the. driving of the fastener, and the feed of the work by the driven fastener, and-ineans for oscillating'the head, in
combination with a stationary work plate and a-jack for holding the work against said plate.
17. A machine of-the'character specified comprising an oscillatory head, a split reciprocatory. driver carried by and movable independently of the head and adapted to engage and clamp a strip. extending between the complemental members thereof, a fixed stop, means for oscillating the head, means for reciprocating the driver independently of the head, and means carried by the head and engaging the said stop and adapted to engage the driver and be rendered operative by the oscillation of the head to cause the complementa-l members of said driver to alternately clamp and release astrip therebetween. a
18. A machine of the character specified, comprising cooperative grippers for driving a strip into the work, cooperative cutters for severing the driven strip near the work, said grippers and cutters being operative independently of each other, a carrier for carrying said grippers and cutters toward and from the work, and means adapted to be engaged bysaid cutters in their movement toward the work for operating them to sever the strip.

A machine of the character specified comprising means for driving the end of a continuous strip into the work, means for moving said driven end in a direction substantially at right angles to the line of drive to feed the work, and means for severing the driven end ,from the strip, all of said opera.-
tions occurring in the sequence given.
20. rkmachine of tlie character specified comprising means for projecting a continu ous strip step-by-step toward and into the work, means for drawing laterally the projected end of, thestrip connected with the work to effect the feeding of the work, and means for severing from the strip each portion which has previously been projected into the work and swung laterally in one direction to feed the work.

A machine of the character specified comprising a main shaft, a head oseillatably mounted upon said shaft, means mounted in said head for projecting a continuous strip step-by-step radially with respect to said shaft into the work, and means for oscillating said head and strip through an are con centric to said shaft to feed the work.
22. A machine of the character specified comprising fastener-driving and severing mechanism adapted to drive and sever from a continuousstrip a series of fasteners, and adapted to feed the work'step-by-step by means of the strip, means for actuating said mechanism to drive said strip and s'everthe jdriven fastener therefrom, and means for actuating said mechanism to effect the feeding of the work.
23. A machine of the character specified comprising a driver adapted to engage and drive a continuous fastener strip into the -work, means for actuating said driver to drive the strip step-by-step into the work, means for holding the driver against longitudinal movement and swinging it laterally todraw the end of the strip connecting the work with said driver to feed the work,

means for moving said nozzle transversely to said first movement while in said aperture to cause the inserted fastener to feed the work.
25. A machine of the character specified comprising a reciprocatory driver having clamps adapted to grip and drive a strip step-by-step into the work, a pair of cutters independent of said clamps, movable with the driver, and adapted to sever the strip between the driver and the work, and means for causing the driver to drive the strip by steps of predetermined length toward the work and for causing the cutters after each driving stroke of the driver to sever the driven end from the strip.
26. A machineof the character specified comprising a mo-vable'head, a reciprocatory member carried by and movable relatively to the head, a driver carried by said member and adapted to clamp and drive a stripv toward and into the work, means adapted to engage said driver when said head is in its initial position and cause the driver to operatively engage the-strip, means for moving the .driverandsaid member toward the work when the head is in'its initial position, means for movingthe head from initial position after the driving of the strip into the work so as to disengage the driver from the means which causes the latter to-operatively engage the strip, a pair of stops, and a pair of cutters independent of said driver, and carried'by and movable relatively to said reciprocatory member, and adapted when moving with said member toward the work to engage said stops and to be actuated thereby to sever the driven end of the strip near the work.
27. A machine of the character specified comprising a frame, a reciprocatory memher or carrier, a driver thereon adapted to drive the end of a continuous strip into the work, means for actuating said member or carrier cutting mechanism on said member or carrier, and means on the frame for causing said cutting mechanism to sever the driven end of the strip flush with the surfaceof the Work.

A machine of the character specified comprising an oscillating head having a guide, means for transversely oscillating said head, a driver movably held in said guide and adapted to grip a continuous strip, means for reciprocating the driver back and forth in the guide, and means rendered ac tive bythe oscillation of'the head for causing said driver to alternately grip and release a stripextending therethrough.

A machine of the character specified comprising an oscillating head having" a guide, means for transversely oscillating said head, a driver normally held in said guide and adapted to grip a continuous strip, means for reciprocating the driver backand forth in theguide, a fixed stop, and means intermediate said driver and said stop adapted to alternately engage with said driver when the latter is oscillated, and so to cause said driver to alternately grip and release a strip extending therethrough.
30. A machine of the character specified comprising means for drivingthe end of a continuous fastenerstrip ,llltO the work, and for-drawing laterally the end of the strip connected with the Work to feed the work,
