To all whom it may concern i I Be it known that I, ELIAS A. W. BnnMnn, of the city of Hamilton, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 1 Monkey Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, a
This invention relates to wrenches in which a fixed j is formed at one end of pivoted at one end in the movable jaw and at the other in the block, the whole being constructed in detail substantially as described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation,partly broken away, of a wrench constructed in accordelevation of part of the wrench looking at the other side. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the movable jaw. Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly in section, of the toggle.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.

The sliding jaw is, however, recessed to receive the friction block 4. which has one edge shaped to engage the friction face 5 formed longitudinally of the shank. This friction face is preferably beveled outwardly, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that if the friction block be pressed toward it the friction block will also be pushed into firm contact with the outer wall 6 of the recess in the sliding jaw. The friction face is also inclined from the back toward the front of the wrench at the handle end of the shank, asshown in Fig. 1'. The purpose of this will hereinafter appear.

i From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a wrench which will satisfactorily accomplish the objects of my invention as set out in the preamble to this specification.
What I claim as my invention is 2- 1. In a wrench the combination with the shank having a friction face formed longie tudinally on one side of the shank facing toward the other edge of the same, of a sliding jaw movable on the shank and having a recess therein; a friction block in said recess adapted to engage thefriction face; and a toggle pivoted at one end in the block and at the other end in the jaw. i
2. In a wrench the combination with the shank having a friction face formed longitudinally on one side of the shank facing toward the other edge of the same, of a slid ing jaw movable on the shank and having a recess therein; a friction block in said recess adapted to engage the friction face; a toggle gage the friction face; and a toggle pivoted at one end in the block and at the other end in the jaw.
4. In a wrench the combination with the shank having afriction face formed longitudinally on one side of the shankfacing toward the other edge of the same and inclined from'the back toward the front at the handle end of the shank, of a sliding jaw movable on the shank and having a recess'therein; a friction block in said recess adapted to engage the friction face; and a toggle pivoted at one end in the block and at the other end in the jaw.

In a wrench the combination with the i of a sliding shank having a friction face formed longitudinally on one side of the shank facing toward the other edge of the same outwardly beveled and inclined from the back toward the front at the handle end of the shank, jaw movable on the shank and having a recess therein; a friction block in said recess adapted to engage the friction face; and a toggle pivoted at one end in the block and at the other end in the jaw.
6. In a wrench the combination with the shank having a friction face formed longitudinally on one side of the shank facing toward the other edge of the same, of a sliding jaw movable on the shank and having a recess therein bounded by a slotted outer wall; a friction block in said recess adapted to engage the friction face and provided with a pin projected through said slot; and a toggle pivoted at one end in the block and at the other end in the aw.
