WATER-METER.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMPSON R. BUTTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llVater- Meters; and 1 do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in water measuring instruments and is particularly designed as a water meter for measuring thek water as it passes over the weir in irrigating ditches, the present invention being particularly designed as an improvement over my issued Patent No. 1,008,446 dated November 14, 1911.
The present application embodies certain improved features of construction for the slide carrying the gage marker and also the improved invention embodies a cover door for the mechanism which will prevent the same from being filled with dirt or dust which would impede its operation.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the covering door open. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with the covering door removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lower portion of the device showing the float. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the upper portion of the device showing a transparent opening in the coverin door.

which is an inclosed box provided with a hole 2 at the bottom for the admission of the water. Projecting upwardly from one side of the member 1 is the indicating plate 3 on which are marked the number of inches on one side and the number of cubic feet on the other. Disposed centrally between these markings is the guide plate 4 having its edges bent over as at 5 to form slots to receive the indicating paper or card 6. The said bent edges 5 are then again bent outwardly as at 7 to form flanges to receive the bent ends 8 of the indicator carrier 9. This carrier consists of the plate 9 proper, formed centrally on which is a projecting tube 10 through which is disposed the marking pencil 11, the sharpened point of which is held in contact with the member 6 by a band spring 12 secured to the vertical rod 13 projecting upwardly from the float 1&1. The rod 13 bends inwardly as at 15 and supports the plate 9 so that as the water rises or falls the pencil 11 makes a mark on the member 0 from which can be obtained the maximum and minimum height and volume of the water going over the weir so that the same can be accurately measured. Hinged to the member 3 is an inclosing door member 16 which closes `over the entire indicating means and is of a size to exactly coincide with the member l and in the open face of said door is a transparent member 17 through which the entire works of the mechanism may be seen.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein. j
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A marker mechanism for a device of the character described comprising a support, a plate secured to said support and having its ends bent inwardly and then outwardly forming two pair of oppositely disposed slots on the face of said plate, a mark reeeiver disposed in one pair of said Slots, a marker to hold it in Contact With said mark plate having bent ends slidably 'disposed in receiver, as described.
