SIGHT FOR FIREARMS! APPLICATION IILED 11110.1;111912.

WITNESSES INVENTOR,

x v i 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. NELSON, OF UTICA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SAVAGE ARMS COMPANY, OF UTICA, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sights for Fireams, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to sights for firearms which are provided with wind-gages.
The invention consists in an improved wind-gage sight whose construction is at once simple, inexpensive to manufacture, substantial and compact, permits ready adjustment while affording means to prevent the part adjusted from being disturbed when once set, and in general peculiarly adapts the device as a reliable, convenient and otherwise practical instrument of its kind.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun-barrel having the improved sight arranged thereon; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sight; Figs. 3 and at are plan views of the upper and lower members thereof; Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, illustrating the means for elevating the sight; and, Fig. 6 shows a modification involving the elevating of the sight.
The lower member a of the sight consists of an elongated metallic plate having at or near one (to wit, its forward) end a transverse enlargement b which is thickened downwardly and forms a transverse dovetailed tongue 0, the same being adapted to be received by a dove-tailed groove cZ formed in the gun-barrel A. The end of the plate (4 having the enlargement b is tapered and beveled on both sides to a point, as shown, and in alinement with said point is arranged the center mark of a transverse scale provided on the top of the member a suitably near said point. The member a has, penetrating it, a threaded hole 9 near the enlargement Z), a substantially central plain hole It, and another threaded hole 2' near its rearward end. The upper member y' is likewise an elongated plate having its forward end tapered and beveled to a point is and having its rearward end Z somewhat widened and upturned and formed with a sight notch m. The member is arranged upon the member a in face to face relation thereto so that its point 70 approximates the Patented Oct. 13, 1914. Serial No. 806,440.
gether by a rivet n penetrating the hole It in member a and a hole 0 in member y. In coincidence with the holes 9 and z in member a, member j has transverse slots 77 and g. Point 70, the centers of hole 0 and slots 29 and g, and the notch m are all in alinement. Extending through the slot 29 of member and tapped into the hole 9 of member a is a headed clamping screw 1".
s is an adjusting screw which is tapped into the holez'in member a and bears against the gun barrel A, its head penetrating, or being accessible to a screw-driver by, the slot 9.
It will be understood that the device, secured fast to the gun-barrel at substantially one end of the device, has its parts formed of material somewhat elastic and that it normally tends to lie flat against the surface of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 1. To change the elevation of its free end requires simply to turn the screw .9. To adjust the device for windage, the upper end is turned on the pivot n with reference to the scale 7, to be thereupon securely held in the adjusted position by turning the screw 9" until its head binds against the member In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the sight elevating screw t is arranged in a threaded hole a tapped in the gun-barrel A and its upper end 4) is tapered and fits the tapered hole w in the free end of the member a. In other respect this type of the improved sight is identical with that already described.
It will be understood that by upturning the rear end of the member j said member affords a handle whereby conveniently and accurately to shift its other or pointer end with reference to the scale.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sight including upper and lower plate members arranged face to face and the former being pivoted on the latter for movement i n its o vn plane, the ii'pjoer member laving a sight notch and the lower member a hole to receive a screw for wingmthe same and theaipperanen ber having a transmt coinciding with said hole, in combination with an elevating screw received in said hole, substantially as described.
2. A sight including upper and lower plate members arranged face to face 55 scale 7, the two members being secured toand the former being pivoted on the latter for movement in its own plane, the vating screw received in said hole, substanupper member having a sight notch and the tially as described. 10 lower member a hole to receive a screw for In testimony whereof I aflix my signature elevating the same and the upper member in presence of two witnesses.
