APPLIOATION FILED JULY 26, 1913.

WILLIS B. woonnurr, or CADIZ. KENTUCKY;
CHURN;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct, 13, 1914,
Application filed July 26, 1913. Serial No. 781,429.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIS B. VVoonnUrF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadiz, in the county of Trigg and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jhurns, of which the following is a specification, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in churns and relates more specifically to the churn dasher.
An object of the invention is to construct the dasher in such manner that it may be formed of light material. without decreasing the strength of the dasher.
Another object is the provision of a churn dasher provided with a plurality of openings of such form that the dasher may be constructed of thin material without de creasing the strength of the dasher.
I A. further object of the invention is to provide a device of-this character with an air chamber connecting the same to the dasher rod or shaft, said air chamber being provided with a socket in its upper end for the end of the shaft.
A still further object is to generally improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and reduce the cost of the same and at the same time increase the etliciency and durability thereof.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully de scribed, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the preferred form of my churn dasher with the air chamber secured thereto shown in section; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the churn dasher and air chamber, showing the lower end of-the dasher shaft secured in the air chamber and said air chamber and dasher in position in a churn, the churn being shown in dotted lines with portions thereof broken away; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a modified form of dasher and air chamber, the upper portion of the air cham her being broken away.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the dasher proper which is in the form of a disk and constructed of aluminum or other suitable metal and provided with a central opening 2 with a plurality of radially disposed equi distantly spaced elongated openings arranged around such openings with their inner extremities terminating in close proximity to such opening 2 and having their side walls diverging outwardly so that thetransverse diameter of the openings increase radially of the disk and in order to strengthen the disk which has otherwise become weakened through the production of such openings 3, Iconnect the opposite side portions of each of the openings 8 with the band t integrally produced with the disk and positioned intermediate of the length of such opening, such band or element being herein disclosed as substantially segmental in form and arranged in a circle concentric with the axis of the disk, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this exact formation. By so producing the openings 3, I have found in actual practice that better churning action is had upon the cream with materially less exertion and it is for this reason that I consider theopenings 3 as the essential feature of my invention as herein disclosed. I have secured the large lower end of an air chamber 5 upon the solid circular portion 6 of the dasher 1 around the central opening 2 thereof by screws or other suitable means engaged through the outwardly directed ears 7 carried by the air chamber 5, as will be clearly seen by referring to the drawing. The air chamber 5 is preferably of conical form and has the upper end thereof in the form of a threaded socket 8 within which is threaded the lower endof the dasher shaft or rod 9. As the lower end of the air chamber 5 is open, it will be readily seen that air will be drawn or sucked up into the air chamber through the central opening 2 of the dasher 1. I also find it of advantage to have the lower end of the air chamber 5 of greater diameter than the opening 2. By this arrangement, the effectiveness of the device is greatly increased. It will be noted that have also provided the dasher 1 with additional openings 10 arranged in a circle adjacent the edge of the dasher 1, the openings 10 being arranged between the openings 4 and'at the outer ends of the arms 11 between the openings 3 and serving as means for separating the last mentioned openings.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, I have dispensed with the openings 10 and simply provided the dasher 1 with the central opening 2, the circle of openings 3 arranged around the central opening 2, and the openings et spaced from the outer ends of the openings 3. In this form, I have shown the air chamber 5 as being formed integral with the solid circular central portion 6 of the dasher l, as will be clearly seen by referring to Fig. 3. v It will be understood that many minor changes may be made in the construction of: the dasher and arrangement of the openings therein as well as in the construction of the air chamber and the manner in which the; same is connected with the dasher, without} departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same. It will therefore be understood, that: while I prefer to construct the dasher and air chamber of metal, any suitable material may be employed.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, I have provided the dasher with an annular flange- 12 by curving the outer edge thereof downwardly, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawing. It will be evident that by curving the edge downwardly in this manner, the dasher may be drawn upwardly from the milk or other contents of the churn more readily and said milk or other contents will readily flow over the edge of the dasher and against the walls of the churn, during upward movement of the dasher.
What I claim is A device of the character described comprising a disk provided with a central opening and with a plurality of elongated equidistantly spaced radial openings having their inner extremities terminating in close proximity to the axis of such disk, the side walls of such openings being arranged in outwardly diverging planes, and an upwardly directed air chamber carried by the disk and disposed around the central opening, the diameter of the lower end of such air chamber being greater than the diameter of such central opening.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
