Description

A. J; TOBE.
MECHANICS TOOL.
APPLIOATION FILED FEB. 25, 1913. 1,118,261. Patented 0et.13,1914
ALBERT J. TOBIE, 0F WESTBURY, NEW YORK.
, MECHANICS T0013.
Application led February 25, 1918.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 750,467.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
`Be it knownthat l, ALBERT J. ToBiE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at -VVestbury, in the county ot' Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanics Tools, of which vthe following is u specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to tools and particularly to mechanics or carpenters tools, and the object thereof is to provide an im proved combination device of this class which may be used as an ordinary rule and alsov as a square and initier-square.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specilication of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which ,m
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tool showing the parts thereof folded to gether;-Fig. 2 a similar view showing the parts of the tool in position for use as a lsqua're'and mitcrsquare;Fig. 3 a section -on'the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and on en enlarged scale;-Fig. 4 a view similar to Figs. l and 2, but showing the parts of the device extended, as when used as a rule, and Fig. 5 a sectional view showing details of the construction of two parts of the rule.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a tool of the class specified which comprises four parts, a, b c and d. The parts a, and d i are of the same length7 or approximately so,
and the parts Z) and c are approximately of `the same length. Both ends of the part 7) are beveled at :in angle-of. 45, and one end of each of the parts a and c is correspond` ingly beveled, so that when the parts are folded or used in the position shown in Fig. 2, two inner and two outer angles each of 45 will bc formed, and whereby scales of exact length and dimensions may be formed on the dillerent parte of the tool and the use thereof facilitated.
The parts of the rule are provided, preferably on both sides, with a scale of inches and fractions thereof, and in the construction shown, my improved tool is designed to forni, when desired, a rule of 24 inches or two feet long, .is shown in'Fig. 4.
The separate parts of the tool may be folded together asshown in Fig. l, for convenience in carryingthe same inI a pocket or otherwise, and in Fig. 2, the said parts are folded so as toforrn a square and mitersquare. In this use of the device, the part c extends, as shown at c2, when thev partsva and d are folded together, as shown in Fig. f
3, to .forni the lbase e of the square. n this position of the parts, the extension c2 of the part c does not interfere with the use of the device as a square, but rather facilitates the Patented oct. 13,1914..
same as it foi-ins a handle therefor, and the base e consists of the two parts a and d, as shown in Fig. 3, and between which is a space c2.
One end of the part b is pivoted to one end of the part c at f, and the other end of the part is pivoted to the part c1, at g, while the part d is also pivoted to the part c at L. The pivot pin k2 by which the parts el and c are connected at h is fixed in the part d by means of a square head or rivet head 71,5 with which said pin is provided, and the part c is free to turn on said pivot pin, but is connected therewith by a beveled coni struction of said pin, and said pin is provided with a projecting head 11.3 having a nose L, I
It will be understood that the connection of the part a at 7L. is a detachable connection, and said part a is provided with an oblong hole h5 through which the head 71.3 of the pin is adapted to passend said hole communicates with a circular recess 71,6 in the outer side of the part a to receive the projecting nose h4 of the head ha, and in which said nose is adapted to turn, and in connecting these parts at 71.3 the part d is swung parallel with the part c, after which the part c is turned into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the head h3 of the pin h passes through thc hole 71.5, after which the part d is swung into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, parallel with thepart a, andthe end d2 of the part d is provided'with an aperture Z3 to receive t-hestud gion the end of the pivot pin g3 by which the connection at g is made, said pivot pinbeing also provided with a head g4, and by means of this construction the parts of the tool are locked in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The part is provided with a circular aperture i to receive the head'h3 of the pivotpin k2 when the parts are folded together,
as shown in Fig. 1, and the part f1 is pro' l h2 when the parts are folded together, as
' swung back shown in Fig. l, and by reason of the elas? tic'ity of the separate arts when thus folded, they will be locke together as will be readily understood. The part o is also provided withfa circular recess 3 which receivesthestud g2 of the pivot pin g3 when the parts are folded together, as shown in Fig. l, and the part d is provided with a recess i* to receive acorresponding knob 'i5 on the part c, and the object of the parts i* and i", is to lock the part d inthe extended position when the device is used as a. rule, as shown in Fig. 4. y
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing descriptlon when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. Suppose the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. l, all that is necessary, when it is desired to use the device as a rule, is to extend the parts, as shown in Fig. 4. In this operation, the parts a and c areiirst swung in line with the part b lafter which the part d is turned into the extended position, and it will be understood that the separate parts maybe folded into'the position shown in Fig-2, from the position shownin Fig., 4, byxfirst turning the parts b and c on the pivotal ,connection at f into the position shown-in said Fig. 2, and then turning the part a; on the pivotal connection at g into the position shown in said figure andpassing the head ha of the pivot pinhz through the aperture It, after which the part d is .swung into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the free end thereof engaged with the stud g2 of the pivot pin g?, and
this operation turns the lpivot pinYz,2 so that the head ha thereof wilengage and'lock the part a; in position, this operationbeing effected by the nose h* of thevheadk3 of the pin h2 turning in the groove ha' until it reaches the position shown in 'Fig 2, in which position all. the parts are locked against movement, until the art d is again detached from its connect1on at g' and parallel with the part c.
My inventlon is not limited to the length of the rule herein shown and described, nor to the exact length of the separate 4parts thereof, and the length of these parts may be varied so as to form a rule of any desired length, in which event the dimensions copie: of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, I
of the square and miter-square will be correspondingly changed, and it will also be understood that the rule may be provided with-different scales of any kind or class.
It will also be seen from the foregoing description that the square shown in Fig. 2 comprlses a base, a perpendicular and' a hypotenuse, and the perpendicular is provided With a part which extends beyond 'the l eled at a corresponding angle at one end.V
only, said parts being connected substantially as shown and described.
2. A tool of the class described composed of four parts one ofvwhich is beveled at an angle of 45 at both ends and two of which are beveled at an angle of 45 at one end, the beveled endsof the last named Y parts being respectively pivotally connected with the opposite'ends o the part-both ends of which are beveled, the fourth part being pivotally connected with one of the parts' one end only of which is beveled and at a predetermined distance from the unbeveled end thereof, and the free end of the other part which is beveled at one end only being adapted to be detachably -connected With said last named parts at the same point,
and said. fourth part being adapted to be swung arallel with the last named part and to e connected therewith at that end thereof which is connected with one end of the part both ends of which are beveled.
In testimony that I clalm the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name rn presence of the subscribing wltnesses thls 24th day of February 1913.
