To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY STEPHEN LAND, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Essex,` `England,' and whose post-oilice address is 8 Park View, Old -Road, Lee, in the county of Essex, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Turning, Shaping, and Screw-Threading Rods or other Metal Blanks, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to an attachment `for lathes whereby rods or other metal blanks may be turned, shaped and screw threaded` and it consists in improvements having for their objects (l) to provide a revoluble support for the metal blanks to be. operated upon (2) to insure, by means of an improved construction oi' ball bearing in the reyoluble support, that the blank will be supported and truly centered in the rotating bush or disk constituting this support through which the blank is fed toward the cutting tools, (3) to facilitate the conversion of the attachment for dealing with blanks of different cross sections, by providing detachable centers or bushes Jfor the blank support secured, for example, by a bayonet joint, and (el) to eliminate the disadvantages arising 'from the fact that in similar e sting apparatus the blank has to be fed to the cutters through the opening in the screw-cutting die head, by mounting the latter so that it can be swung laterally clear of the cutting-tool box and locked both inj the oil and in the operative position, thereby reducing the unnecessary projection ot' the blank from the lathe chuck and also enabling th'e tool to deal with blanks of larger size for any given size of die head.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereinw Figure l is an end elevation; Fig. 2 a side elevation; Fig. 3 a longitudinal section; Fig. 4 a plan; Fig. 5 an elevation of the ball bearing for the blank guide or bush; and Fig. 6 a detail view showing the blank guide.
Referring to Figs. l-B, the apparatus consists essentially ol two elements', namely a tool box A and a screw cutting -die head B. According to this invention the latter is pivotally mounted upon the tool box head .fz by means of a pin a projecting forwardly on a lag on the tool box head, which is also lfitted with a spring-urged latch a2, lwhich is adapted to lock the die head in either of two positions, namely with the die head concentric with the tool bo-x as shown in full lines in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, and
through which the blank is fed and by which it is supported is, according to the resent invention, fitted with a detachable ush 7' which is secured in position by means of a bayonet catch j and is consequently readily removable for the substitution of a bush of different size or shape of aperture. The bayonet catch y" projects inwardly from a ring jf which has an inwardly turned flange i3 at its rear end acting as an abutment for the bush y' and an outwardly extending flange j* at its front end serving as a cover' plate Jfor a ball bearing upon which the revoluble support runs. The balls c of-this bea ring run between an outer xcd ball race and an inner revolving ball race lo, the arrangement being such that any lateral thrust. due for examplelto a slight irregib larity in the blank, is taken by the ball bearing.
In a turning operation the screw cutting die head carrying the screw cutting dies m, is unlatched and swung into the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, the blank rod is fed forward to a suitable cx-v tent through the lathe head and secured in the lathe chuck. The blank is then fed through the bush 7' to be operated on by the euttingtools (l which may all be arranged to Follow on it the body of the blank is to be turned down to the same diameter at all points, or may be arranged in pairs, each pair set, by means of the setting screws d', to the same dept-h and cut and secured in position by the clamping screws (Z2. Upon the completion of the turning operation the turned rod is withdrawn and the scnew eutting die head may be swung into alinement with the tool box, andthe screw cutting dies moved into operative position.
Having thus described the nature of this` invention and the best means I know of. carrying the same into practical effect, I claim z*- 1. In a lathe attachment of the character herein referred t0` for turning and screw-- threading a metal blank, the combination of a turning tool box having a head plate, a laterally swinging screw-cutting die head pivotally attached to the head plate, and a detachable revoluble bushing interposed be tween the tool box and screw-cutting die head.
2. In a lathe attachment of the character herein referred to for turning and screw,- threading a metal blank, the combination of a turning tool box having a head plate, a lat v erally swinging screw-cutting die head pivotally. attached to the head plate, a ball bearing device supported on the head plate intermediate of the tool box and screwy'cutting die head, and a detachable bushing revolubly mounted in said ball bearing de v1ce.
3. In a lathe attachmentvo the character herein referred to forturning and screvy threading a metal blank, the combination or' a turning tool box having a head plate, a
screw cutting die plate pivotally 4attached tothe head plate and capable of swinging from a position wherein it is concentric With the tool box into a position wherein it is clear of the face of the tool box head and vice versa, and means for locking the die plate in each position.
4. In a device ofthe character referred te herein 'for turning and screw-threading a metal blank, the combination with a turning tool box and a screw cutting die head pivotallT mounted thereon of a revoluble support for the blank comprising a removable bush and a ball bearing device consisting of an outer ball Arace fixed in the Wall of the tool box, an inner revolving ball race.v balls interposed between the said races, a ring member bearing on the inner ball race and (iletachably connected to said bush, said ring having both an inwardly turned flange serving as an abutment for the bush and an' outwardly extending' flange serving as a cover for the ball bearing.
