Description

G. UHL. FIREARM SIEPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY '7, 1914.
Patented 0011.6,1914.
,UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-GEORG UHL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' FIREARM-SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoRG Um citizen of the United States of America, ,residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearm- Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for supporting a fire arm during operation in order to steady the aiming, and has for its object to provide a gun rest which'can be removably attached to the gun to extend alongside of it when not in use and when detached and unfolded to support the gun during operation.
I accomplish my object by providing an extensible member having a socket connected to it by a swivel joint and serving to en-' gage the gun. The extensible member freely engages with itssocket the barml of the gun ind is strapped or otherwise removably sezured to the gun to extend alongside of the )arrel thereof when not in use. The ex- ;ensible member when detached from the gun, can be swung around the swivel joint Llld adjusted to the desired height. To renler the aiming more steady while shooting 11 lying position, I provide an additional Foldable rest. 1 7
My invention will be fully understood by 'eference to the accompanying drawing in vhich similar reference characters denote orresponding parts and in which- Figure l is an elevation'of my gun suport as applied to the gun, the dotted lines ndicating the support unfolded and extendd; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the extended 'un support shown in position of use; Fig. 3 an enlarged elevation of a portion of the Xtensible gun support; Fig. 4 is an enlarged ross section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is n enlarged similar view as Fig. 1 showing 1e additional foldable rest unfolded and ipporting the gun and Fig. 6 is a front iew of the gun support and the unfolded 2st.
In the drawing a denotes a fire-arm or gun 1d 6 is the gun support. he latter constsof a plurality of telescopically engaglg sections 1), 6 b permitting the extenon of the member I) to any desired height length. At one end the extensible mem- :1 has attached to it by a swivel joint an ljustable yoke or socket adapted to freely gage around the barrel of the gun, as

clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The swivel j oint between the loop-shaped part c and the member I) is formed by a pin rotatively mounted in a sleeve o which is fixedto the free end of the section b. Fixed to the lower end of the member 6 is a foldable base or foot I). This foot consists of side bars hinged or pivoted at b to the free end of the innermost section b of the member 6 and connected byv a foldable cross piece I) hinged to the opposite ends 6 of the side bars. In unfolded position this foot has the shape-of a triangle and serves as a rest for the member I; in upright position. For locking the sections in adjusted position I provide each inner section with a pin 6 which is adaptedto. project through a longitudinal slot Z) provided in the surrounding section. I also provide. each slotted sect1on with a plurality of cross notches b which are spaced apart according to the different adjustments desired, and which are adapted to receive the pin e in adjusted po sition. Each inner sectiori is also provided with a leaf-spring f which is displaced relative to the pin a so that normallyywhen the pin e is Within the slot 6*, it will be compressed by the surrounding section; but when the section carrying the pin 6 is turned to engage the latter into the notch b, it will be broughtinto the range of the longitudinal slot b in which it will expand and form an obstruction or stop-locking the sections in adjusted position.
In order to provide for a support of the gun when shooting in lying position I provide an auxiliary base. This base consists of a part (Z of semi-cylindrical cross section and of a diameter which conforms with that of the section b. At its ends the part 03 has curved extensions d the free edges of which are slightly bent inwardly so as to snap around the section b when the part d is folded over the latter. This part 03 is hinged or otherwise pivotally connected at d to a rod d which at its opposite end is loosely mounted around the pin 0' to be capable of swinging thereon. The base or rest can thus be swung around the hinge point (8 and the pin 0 and is thus rendered foldable.
The gun support is adapted to be removably attached to the gun as by a. strap 9 or the like as indicated in Figs. 1 and 5, so as to extend alongside the barrel and to engage with its socket the mouth end of the barrel. as indicated in Figs. 2 and 6. For
Q i I 1,112,782
shooting in standing or kneeling position the extensible member b is detached and swung around into upright position as -in dicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and adjusted according to the height desired. The
swivel joint between the socket and the member I) and the hinge'joint of the foot 6 permit the lowering and raising of the gun according to the firing position. When fir-. ing in lying osition the member 25 need not be detached rom the gun. Instead the base (I or rest is unfolded and swung'into upright position as shown in Figs 5 and 6.
What I claim and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
1. A gun support, consisting of a longitudinally extensible member, a socket thereon for the engagement of the gun and a foldable base or foot at the lower end of said member.
2. A gun support, consisting of a longitugun when shooting in lying position, said base being connected to said member and adapted to engage around said member when in folded position.
3. A gun support, consisting of a longitudinally extensible member adapted to be removably attached to the gun, a socket on said member to engage the gun, a foldable foot or base to support said member in upright position and a foldable base to support the gun when shooting in lyin position, said base being connected to said member and adapted to engage around the latter when in folded position.
4. A gun support, consisting of an extensible member, a socket thereon to engage the gun and a foldable base serving to support the gun when shooting in lying position, said base being pivotally connected to said socket and adapted to normally engage around said member when in folded position. a
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
