WRENCH.
To @ZZ fr/wm it may @0f/toorn i Be it known that 1, ORSON MONROE Rosie,
` a citizen of the United States residing -at Medford, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented knew and useful Improvements in `liVreiiclies, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve-` ments in wrenches, and resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
1n the drawing: Figure 1 is a" perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the saine, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the movable jaw detached looking toward ,the underface thereof.
Referring .now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a monkey wrench constructed in accordance with the` present invention. `This wrench includes a stationary jaw 2 which is formed upon the outer' end of a substantially rectangular body portion 3, the said body being, of course, disposed at a right angle to the jaw proper. The body terminates in a rightv angular shoulder 4, the said shoulder communicating with the longitudinally extending shank 5 of the wrench. The body has its lower face, at its juncture with the shank 5 `and with the outer face of the jaw 2, preferably inclined, as shown in the drawing, and two of the opposite walls or the faces of the shank are provided with-threads 6, the said threads being rounded to co-act with `similar threads formed upon. the boie of an operating sleeve 7. The sleeve 7 has its inner end, or its end adjacent the j aw 2 and shoulder provided with an annular flange 8, the same having a smooth outer surface, while tlie` outer surface of the operating sleeve'is preferably milled, as shown in the drawing. The flange 8 is adapted to be received within a transverse recess or throat9 formed upon the rear portion of a carriage 10. This carriage is adapted to `be disposed over the shank 5 and opposite the shoulder 4 of the body 3 of the wrench, and is also adapted tov contact with the said shoulder 4 to limit the movement of the body in, what may `be termed, an inward direction, the outward movement of the body and sleevebeing restricted through the medium of a handleV y `Specication of Letters Patent. `a wall or shoulder for a y y Patented Sept.f29,'1914. seriaiNaszMss. i i
pression 12, and the carriage atfthe rear an upstanding` member 13, which provides y purpose which will presently be described.
The movable Jaw,
.f lhe body 15 of the movable jaw 14 hasits inner facecentrally provided with `a longitudinally extending depression or channel lwithin which is secured` one end of a `fiat spring' 18, the said spring bearing upon the straight face of the body 3 of the stationary jaw 2, and as a consequence swinging the movable jaw 14 outwardly therefrom, so as to provide a substantially flaring mouth or en-` trance between the aws 2 and 14:. The cai'- riage 10, it will be noted, comprises only a substantially rectangular block, and is arranged only upon the face of theshank adjacent the said shoulder 1 of the body 3, and
in order to sustain the said carriage upon the shank and to retain the tail able awvwithin the opening provided therefor in the carriage l0, I employ a substantially U-shaped yoke 19, the under wall of which being rounded to correspond with the rounded threads 5 upon the lower face of theshank, the side walls being straight and beingsecured to the carriage 10 through the medium of removable elements in the nature of pins 20. j b
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the adfurther detailed description. y
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A wrench including `a body having a sta-` 11'which is secured upon the `shajnk. The carriage 10 is provided upon its upper'face with a transversely arranged roundedde-` b b indicated by the numeral 14, includes a jaw proper and an angu'larly `arranged longitudinally extending1 of the movvantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art i to which such invention appertains without iio 60 wall of the said depression is formed with tionary jaw, said body having one of its ends formed with a straight Wall providing i a shoulder, the body below the shoulder being provided With a longitudinally extending shank having two of the opposite Walls thereof threaded, an operating sleeve having a threaded bore arranged upon the shank and cooperating with the threads thereof,
` said sleeve having an annular iange for one of its ends, a carriage arranged over the shank opposite the shouldered Wall of the body, said carriage having a throat receiving the flange of the operating sleeve, the carriage having a transverse annular open- ',ing and being provided at the rear Wall of v the opening with an upstanding member dovvnturned tail, the lower portion of which being rounded and adapted to be received Within the rounded opening in the carriage and the said tail, above its rounded portion, adapted to Contact With the upstanding wall of the Carriage, the body of the movable jaw having a longitudinal channel, a fiat spring having one of its ends secured Within the channel, the opposite end of the spring bearing upon the body of the stationary jaw, a yoke surrounding one of the threaded faces and two of the sides oi the shank and adapted to have its side Walls Contact With the tail of the movable jaw, and means 'for removably seouring the yoke to the carriage.
n testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in presence of tivo Witnesses.
