THE MORRIS PETERS CO.. PHoro-LlrHo., WASHINGTON. D r,
GAETANO IMPELLITTERI AND'ANTONINO VIMPELLI'JJTERI, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
"Specification of'Letters f lateiit.` Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed MarchlZ, 1914. Serial No. 824,095.
To @ZZ whom tm/ay concern:
Be it known that we, GAETANO IMPELLIT? TERI, a citizen olf' the United States, and ANTONINO lMrnLLrT'rnRI, a subject of the King ol' ltaly, both residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Relillable Bottles, of which the fol lowing is a ull, clear, and complete `disclosure.
Our invention relates to a self-acting closure for bottles of the so-called non-retillable type, and con-templates adevice consisting of few, inexpensive parts, easy to make and assemble, and adapted and arranged to close the bottle opening before the bottle reaches a horizontal from an invert ed position.
The advantages and utility oi our inven-` tion will be understood readily from the" following description.
Referring to the drawings accompanying andv forming a part of this i specilication, wherein we have illustrated one embodiment of our invention,-Figure l` is a verti-` cal section showing parts vin elevation; Fig.`
2 a section similar to Fig. 1 but showing the bottle inverted; Fig. 3 a section similar to Fig. 1 but showing the bottle halfway between an inverted and a horizontal position; Fig. l a section similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modification; and Fig. 5 an elevation of the parts forming our closure showing them spaced apart for clearness olf illustration.
Similar reference characters referto similar parts throughout the drawings.
Resting on the top of the bottle is a cap 5, preferably of the same outside dimensions as the top of the bottle on which it rests and having side walls of less thickness than 1Q open at the bottom (Fig. 1), and .provided with side openings 13.` Side spacing members 14 having upward extensions 15 (Fig.` 4L) are'formed on :the outside olf the valve chamber to space the sidewalls of the chamber from the inside of the cap, andv to space the top of the valve chamber from the horizontal shoulders 8 near the top of the cap.y It is obvious that the valve chamber and cap may beformed in one piece if desired. y
. .Resting on the inner edge of thebottle Opening is a valve member consisting of an inverted semi-cylindrical portion 16 and an extension or stein 17.` The upper surfaceof shown at 1S in order to reduce its weight and preventany possibility ofl its sticking to the horizontal shoulder S. The inner edge of the bottle opening may bebeveled, if desired,'.to` form a seat for the valve member.
`W hen the bottle is in vertical position as shown in Fig. 1, it is impossible to introduce "liquidintothe bottlejas the valve member tightly closes thebottleopening. Vf hen the bottle is inverted the partsassume the position shown in Fig. 2. The liquid flows around the weight 11, through the radial recesses or openings of spacing member 20, into the valve chamber'10, out through side openings l18, between the side oit' the chamber and the` side of thelcap, vthen between the top of the chamber and shoulder 8, and thence out through the "opening 6. The parts are so proportioned that when the bottle is in inverted position (Fig. 2) the weight 11 restson the end of stem 17, and on the side'ol the bottle "approximately at its point of curvature't so that if a line, -as a-a, be drawn through the point of contact of the 1 weight with the bottle and at right angles of this construction, the weight will `fall` i the bottle. This prevents the introduction oztliquid into the bottle by the Well-known ymethod `of pouring liquid into the top When the bottle is in an upright positioinelosing the top opening, and bringing the bottle so slowly and ycarefully to a horizontal position that the valve Will not close. It is impossible to reill the bottle by this method With our closure as the valve closes positively beforethe bottle reaches a horizontal position. "if an attempt be made to reiill the bottle by shaking, the Weight is liable to break the bottle.' It also is impossible to refill the bottle by creating a partial vacuum. The val-ve will not lift entirely from its seat but Will only tilt or `rock to a very slight degree.
. lf it is desired to pro-vide a small and light valve member With a large and heavy Weight, a Washer 7 may be utilized as shown in Fig t, adapted to iit the top of the botl tle. The valve thus can be made considerably smaller than the bottle opening and consequently lighter. The ball member is ynot limited in size by the opening in the Washer but may be as large as the bottle 'opening and consequently heavier. It -is ob- I vious that the principle of operation is not modified by the use of said Washer and that the claims are to be construed accordingly.
Having described one embodiment of our invention', Which' We understand may be modified Without departing from the principle thereof or from the scope of the claims, What We claim is:
'1. A combination in a non-refillable bottle of a bottle and means to prevent the Copies of this patent may be.obtained for flow of liquid in one direction comprising a cap, a valve chamber adapted to rest on the top of said bottle, means to space said chamber from said cap at its top and sides, a valve adapted to rest on the top of said bottle and movable Within said chamber, a valve stem, means to space said stem from the sides of said bottle, and a Weight secured to the stem by flexible connection adapted When the bottle is inverted to rest on the end of said stem and en the side of the bottle approximately at the point of curvature between the neck and body of the bottle, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a non-rellable bottle, of a bottle, and means to prevent the ow of liquid in one direction comprising a cap, a valve chamber adapted to rest on the top of said bottle, a valve adapted to rest on the top of said bottle and movable Within said chamber and provided With a stem, and a Weight secured to the stem by a iexible connection adapted to rest on the end of said stem and the sides of said bottle when said bottle is inverted and so arranged that if a line be drawn through the point of contact of said Weight With said bottle at right angles to the side of the neck of said bottle the center of gravity of said Weight will be on the opposite side of said line from said stem.
