In the operation of this device, the handle 7 being grasped in one hand of the operator, the loop 10 on the-rod 9 has onef'oi' the operators lingers inserted therein, either of the handwhich. grasps the handle 7 or the other hand, as may he most convenient, and said rod is moved outwardly toward the handle 7, thereby causing the rack bar 14 to be drawn inwardly into the casing l which movement causes the ratchet wheel 13 and the disk 12 carried thereby to be rapidly rotated and the periphery of said disk being in contact with the sparking metal 18 produces a series of sparks which lights the Wick 4 of the lamp 2 disposed adjacent thereto. Simultaneously with this actuation of the igniting device, the lamp 2 is swung outwardly from the casing 1 through the openside thereof y means of the link 11., which, onthe inward movement of the rod 9 in said casing, straightens or moves into a lateral position substantially at right angles to said rod. 9, thereby forcing the lamp 2 outwardly, causing it to swing on its pivot 3 outwardly into a. position beyond the casing 1. The torch is then ready. for use. After the torchlhas been used and it is desired to retract the lamp 2 within the casing 1, the loop 10 of the rod 9 is released and the spring 15 in the casing 1 will force said rod upwardly into said casing, thereby forcing the bar 14- out wardly-and link 11 into oblique position shown in Fig. 1, whereby the lamp is moved into the casing and completely housed thereby.
