To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, W'At'rnn S. PoLLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Respirator, of which the following is a specification.
In many occupations such for example mining, metal grinding, and numerous others, the health of the workman is seriously affected owing to the poisonous fumes or gases or the large amount of impurities and foreign material in the air, and which, unless some means are taken to prevent such action, are inhaled by the workman with consequent injury to his health and in many cases with fatal results in a comparatively short time. In the devices heretofore employed for this purpose, they have been heavy and cumbersome and liable to become clogged, thereby rendering them ineifective" that they are soon discarded.
With the above and other objects in view,
which will more clearly hereinafter appear 1n the detail description, my invention in its 1 broad and generic scope consists of a novel respirator which is of very light weight, which is cool and comfortable to use and which does not interfere with the speech of the user.
It further consists of a novel respirator which is constructed of very light material, such as for example aluminum or the like, and which is provided with novel filtering means whereby the impurities in the dustladen air are prevented from entering the lungs of the user as inhalation takes place.
It further consists of a novel construction of a hollow respirator adapted to seat on the upper lip and cheeks of' the user, and provided at each side with a multiplicity of ports which are adapted to be covered with filtering material of any desired nature.
It further consists of a novel construction of a respirator having; novel means for permitting" the exhalation of the air there through, which may be employed if desired, although this feature of my invention is not essential in all cases and may be dispensed with if desired.
It further consists of other novel features tion, I have shown in. the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to. be understood; that the various instrumentalities of" which my invention consists. can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is notlimited to. theprecise ar- :u'anuementv and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and, described.

Referring to: the drawings 1 designates a respirator embodying my. invention, the same conaprising: a hollow casing which may be constructed of any desired material, but which in practice I prefer to make of a very light material, such as for example aluminum, in order: that the weight of my device may be reduced to a minimum. The casing I is provided with an inner face 2-, which is shaped tov conform to the upper lip and checks of the user, and the upper central portion 3 is outwardly deflected in order to fit under the nostrils of the user, so that the slots 4: andfi which are preferably angularly inclined with respect to each other, will register with the openings of the nose. The front face 6 of the casing is formed of a plate of materi'al', the edges of which. are secured: with respect to the rear plate forming the rear face 2 of the casing, in any desired manner, and toillustrate one manner of accomplishing this I have shown the outer edge of the rear plate 2 as deflected over the outer edge ct thefront face 6, as is best seen at 7 in Fig; 3', said plates being spaced" from each other in order to form a chamber 8,

The outer face of the cap 11 is provided with a desired number of apertures 15.
In some cases it 1s advantageous to employ a valve controlled port through which the air may be exhaled, but the same is not essential and may be dispensed with if desired. This port such as 16, may be located at any desired point on the casing 1, and is provided with a valve 17 adapted to cover said port and having one end fixed to the casing as at 18, it being understood that any desired type of valve mechanism may be employed and that the one shown is simply for the purpose of illustration.
It will be apparent that the user may exhale through the same ports 10 and 15, which are the ones through which the inhalation takes place, or if he prefers he may exhale through'the mouth, and in case a valve mechanism is employed, he may exhale through such mechanism as is evident.
The filtering medium employed may be treated with any desired antiseptic or other material in order to neutralize or overcome any noxious or poisonous fumes or gases which tendto have a deleterious effect on the workman.
" Special attention is directed to the fact that in my present invention the mouth of the operator is not interfered with in any manner, and the dust or other impurities in the air are filtered in such a manner that the only air which can be inhaled is that which has been purified and has had the deleterious matter separated therefrom.
Owing to the location of the filtered material the air will be uniformly filtered, and each opening in the nostril receive substantially the same volume of air.
It will be seen that a front plate 6 has portions thereof on each side of its center, outwardly and laterally deflected, the laterally defie'cted portions having apertures therethrough, and caps are providcd'with their side wall engaging the'side wall of the outwardly deflected portion ofthe front plate, and of such dimensions that the apertured front face of such cap will be spaced from the apertured portion of the front plate, whereby a chamber is formed to receive any desired filtering or other material.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of a respirator which embodies the features of lIlSlLtlllCG, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a respirator, a hollow casing having its rear face shaped to contact with the lips and cheeks of the user and to fit under his nose and provided with openings to register with his nostrils, the front face of said casing having the material thereof near opposite ends outwardly and laterally deflected, the laterally deflected portion being provided with apertures, filtering material. covering said apertures, and caps in friction-a1 engagement with said outwardly defiected portions for holding said filtering material in position.
2. In a. respirator, a hollow casing having its rear face shaped to contact with the up- .per lip and checks of the user and to leave the mouth uncovered and to fit under his nose and provided with openings to register with his nostrils, chambers on the front face of said casing near its opposite ends, communicating with the interior of the casing, filtering material within said chambers, and caps for holding said filtering material in position. 3. In a respirator. a hollow casing consisting of a rear and a front plate secured together at their outer edges, said rear plate being shaped to contact with the upper lip and the checks of the user and to fit under the nose of the user and having openings to register with the nostrils of the user, said front plate, on opposite sides of its central portion, being outwardly deflected to form side walls and apertured front walls, and caps each having an apertured front wall and having side walls adapted to engage the side walls of said outwardly deflected portions, whereby a chamber is formed between the apertured portiops of said front plate and the apertured portions of said caps.
