TYRE, PENNSYLVA IA,
CUSPIDOR.
1,111,544.- 1 Application filed August 5,
and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a speci- This invention relates to cuspidors, and the objects of my invention, are, first, to provide a cuspidor with simple and effective means for preventing the contents thereof from being spilled when the cuspidor is tilted or accidentally upset; second, to promaintained in a sanitary condition; third, to provide a cuspidorthat can be advantageously used in hotels, theaters, depots and other public places where floors and carpets are liable to be injured by the upsetting of a cuspidor, and fourth, toprovide a cuspidor that is simple in construction, susceptible to any desired ornamentation, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which 1 it is in tended. i
I attain the above objects by a mechanical constructon that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and ref-' erence will now be had to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a cuspidor in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion of the cuspidor.
A cuspidor in accordance with this invention comprises two cylindrical sections 1 and 2, the section 1 having a flat bottom 3 provided with a central hollow conical-shaped support 4 for a detachable conical-shaped deflector 5 of less diameter than the section 1. The deflector 5 hasa shell 6 that fits over the upper end of the support 4, whereby the deflector can be easily removed and the section 1 thoroughly cleaned and maintained in a sanitary condition. The section 1 has the lower edges thereof provided with diametri cally opposed and outwardly extending lugs 7 that are provided with seats 8. Theupper edges of the section 1 have a circumferen- Specification of Letters Patent.

tially arranged socket 9 that is U-shaped in cross section and located within said socket is a gasket 10, preferably made of rubber or other resilient material. The gasket 10 is U-shaped in cross section and receives the lower edges of the section 2.
The top of the section 2 is closed, as at 11 and provided with a central depending funnel-shaped mouth piece 12, the lower end of which extends into a plane with the lower edges of said section. The lower or inner end of said mouth piece has an inverted conical-shaped deflector 13 that is formed integral with said mouth piece, said inverted deflector cooperating with the deflector 5 in preventin the contents of the cuspidor from entering the mouth piece 12, when the cuspidor is upset; The upper edges of the section 2, at diametrically opposed points has apertured lugs 14: and extending through said lugs aretie rods 15 having heads 16 engagingin the seats 8 of the lugs 7. Nuts 17 PATENT ornIoE.
are screwed upon the upper ends of said tie rods, whereby the sections 1 and 2 can be locked together to insure a non-leakable connection between said sections and provide a receptacle for spittle and other matter. It is through the medium of the tie rods that the sections of the cuspidor can be separated and thoroughly cleaned and maintained in a sanitary condition, and it is through the me dium of the'deflectors 13 and 5 that the contents of the cuspidor cannot be spilled should the same be accidentally upset or tilted.
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A cuspidor comprising a cylindrical body portion formed of an upper and lower section, said lower section having its top edge provided with a socket for the reception of said upper section, each of said sections provided with a pair of apertured lugs, said lower section being closed at its bottom and said upper section open, tie bars extending through said lugs and having heads at their lower ends countersunk in the lugs of said lower section, and handles mounted Copies of this patent maybe obtained. for
upon the uppervends of said tie bars'and engaging the'lugs of the upper section.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in thepresence ofitwo Witnesses.

upon said tie bars and engaging the lugs of the upper section.
2. A cuspidor comprising a body portion formed of a pair of abutting cylindrical sections, each of said sections provided with apertured lugs, tie bars extending through said lugs and having heads set in the lugs of the lower section and handles mounted Witnesses:
