To all whom it may concern J. KEENE, OE 'cHIoAGo'iLLINoIs, ASSIGNOR TO ,onroaeo j v ILLINQTSLA CORPORATION.
COMPANY, OF CHICAGO,
sriarne BUTT SPItiNG-HINGE.
''Be it known? that LIWILLIAM J. KEnNE,-a
'citizen'aof the Uni-ted States, and a resident longitudinally more particularly of Ghicago countyo-fCook, and .State of Illinois, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements "in Spring-Hinges, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
The inventionrelates to double-acting spring hinges for. doors or the like, and to spring; hinges which are adapted o beinounted in a recessed cornerl 'of'the' door and vare provided" with a movable, spring-actuated bolt which cooperatesf-with studs or rollers'fiXed yieldingly holdthe door in] central position.
The invention; seeks to provide a "'siinple' effective construction of, this sort whichjcan be economically nianufactiirefd and" consists in the features "of" improvement hereinafter setf'fo'rth, illustrated inthe preferred form in the 'aocoinpa'nying' drawings. and jrno're particularly pointedfout in theappended claims. 1 .1
'F f i the drawings, Figure 1' is a longitudinal: section of ther iinpjrfoved hinge' shown as applied 'tothe door. Fig. 2'is a-horizontal' section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
4: is inverted view Fig. 3 is a plan view ofthe.floorplate. Fig: "ofvthe adjustablecollar.
The frame ores improved hinge preferabl-y comprises "a iron or" steel, which 1 s1 provided at one end wwith a downturnedportion'11. The Oppo? the floor is land sitefend oftl1e*fran1e*bar and the end of the-portion 11 are provided with upwardly and horizontally projecting extentions 12 andl3, respectively, by which the hinge is secured" in positionto the door. [As shown,
theihiiige is adapted to be set within a re cess' let'cut in the lower corner of the door 15. The extensions 12" and 13 fit within grooves or .rabbets formed intheside and theretobyscrews 16. The other hinge Intern-- ber comprises .a' plate 17 which restsupon is adapted to be fixed .in position infa'nysuitable manner. In the form jshownff the platelg is provided with holes {19 arrangedfto receive screws20; .The floor lplate is 'provided' with an 'upvi ,wardly projecting circular boss? 21, -A finishing'fzplate '22 ofthin f sheet inetalflts over bar 10.

screws" 20. This v r o e m thmugh which the boss 21proj ects.
A- pivot bolt 23 extends through an opening- 2st 1n. the boss 21' and is] rigidly secured to the floor plate, preferably by upsetting its lower end. "The upper end of the pivot boltfls jo'urnaled in .a bushing 25 which flis snugly within an opening in the frame Preferably, the bolt is provided with an enlarged upper end orfhead 26 which overlaps bar. As shown, the doorIis1 provided with a recess to receive the head 26. l
A collar 28 rests'upon and is adjustably secured to the boss 21 of the floor plate and is provided. with an opening through which the pivot pin" or bolt extends. In the preferred construction shown, "the l boss. 21 is provided with an upwardly projecting lug 29 which is arranged within a recess"30 T28, and a pair of adjusting screws 31 are threaded through the'portions of the collar on opposite sides of the recess.
These screws engage jthe lug 29 to hold the upper faceof the frame the'plate' l7 "and is held in position bj the plate is provided with an the collar; against movement, but by adjusting the screws, the collar may be ad justed above the pivot bolt23. v
Theripper face of the collar 28 is pro:
vided with acircular flange 32 within which sets a concaved ring 33 and a series of balls 34 are interposed between the ring and'the lower flanged end of the bushing 25, The bearing thus formed sustains the weight of theldoor.
The spring actuated plunger 35 f of thehinge is arranged'within acoiled spring 36 and is providedfwith a forked inneriend,
thearins 87 of which extend within the horizontally disposed guiding recess 38 formed in the collar .28 between its upper andlower portions. The portions of i the collar above and below the recess 88 are connected bythe walls of therecess 30and by an in:
te'gral part 39 arranged in front ofthe pivot upper bolt'23. Studs 40 extend between the and lower portions of the collar 28 and acrosstherecess 38'. These studs are arranged on opposite sides of the pivot bolt 23 and are arranged to, cooperate with the 7 arms 37 of the spring plunger. Preferably,
the studs are provided with rollers 41 which are engagedbyjthearmsBZ. :9
j The inner endfof (the "spring 36 engages a flange 42 "onthe plunger and the outer-end iia mal
uniting. said When the door is swung in one or the other direction, the frame of the hinge swings-therewith about the pivot bolt 23. The spring plunger swings about one or the other of the eccentric studs 40 so that the spring 36is compressed and acts,- whenthe door is released, to return the door to norcentral position. If the'door is. swung to wide open position or more than from its closed position, the spring plunger will act tohold it open. By'adjusting the screws 31, the hinge frame can be adjusted on the pivot bolt 23 to accurately aline the door in central position. The hinge frame and operating parts are preferably inclosed in a pair of finishing plates 45 whichare secured to the door by screws 46. The rear inturned edges of these plates are overlapped by a finishing plate 47 which is secured in position by the screw or screws 16 which pass through the extension 12 of the hinge frame. It is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claims' I claim as my invention p g 1.
