J ENNIE HAMMOND, OF FARMINGDALE, NEW YORK.
CARPET-SWEEPER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 2, 1913.
Patented Sept. 15, 1914.
Serial No. 777,133.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JENNIE HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, resident of Farmingdale, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Carpet- Sweeper Attachments; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention has relation to attachments for carpet sweepers, having for its object to lay the dust, and to increase the capacity of the sweeper for the collection of the dust or dirt.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the invention as applied; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
In these drawings the numeral 1, designates a carpet sweeper casing, and 2, the dust pans thereof wherein the dust collects, said pans being hinged at 3 for discharge in the usual manner.
4: is my attachment, consisting of an absorbent oil soaked strip of cloth, fitting detachably over the open top of the pan 2, so that the dust and dirt swept into the pan by the rotary brush 5, coming immediately in contact with the oil soaked cloth will be laid and prevented from rising and spreading. The attachment cloth runs usually longitudinally of the pan and is preferably of felt provided with a center buckle 6 for taking up and letting out slack, or adjustment to fit dilierent lengths or sizes of sweepers. The ends of the cloth strip extend down in the intervals 7 between the ends of (Jopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the pan and the end walls of the sweeper casing, and have at their lower extremities each a stop device 8, preferably of soft yielding nature, such as a bend or coil 9, in the cloth itself, said bend being made permanent and sufficiently stiff by a line of stitches 10. In this way the lower ends of the cloth strip which come in contact with the floor will not injure the floor or catch in the carpet as would a hard or unyielding stop device.
The invention is readily applied to and removed from the sweeper and will serve for quite a long period of time as a week or so dependent upon the amount of sweeping done, without cleaning or resoaking with oil. In the adjustment of the buckle to take up the slack in the cloth strip, the stops will be drawn upward into close engagement with the bottom of the sweeper out of the way.
The cloth strip being stretched over the top of the pan is exposed upon both sides thereof for the more effective laying of the dust.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a carpet sweeper having an open bottom casing and a dust pan mounted between the end walls of said casing, of an absorbent cloth strip stretched over the top of said pan, said strip having ends extending between the ends of the pan and the end walls of the casing, a stop device at each extremity of said strip, and means of lengthwise adjustment of said strip.
2. The combination with a carpet sweeper having a dust pan, of an attachment comprising an absorbent cloth strip stretched over the open top of said pan and exposed upon both sides to the dust.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JENNIE HAMMOND.
