To all whom it may concern l Be it known that 'I, WILLIAM F. Bunsen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Bed; and I do hereby declare a j the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The aim of this invention is to provide an adjustable bed, in which each end of each side rail is independently adjustable of the other ends of said side rails, so as to accommodate the bed to the unevenness of the floor, as Well as leveling and adjusting the height of the spring of the bed. It is apparent that by this structure the head or the foot of the side rails may be raised higher than the opposite end of the bed and vice versa.

One of the features of the invention is the provision of screw threaded rods telescoping the corner posts of the bed and swiveled therein and threaded through the jointed extensions of the side rails, whereby each end of each side rail may be adjusted.

In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved bed constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through one foot post and one head post of the bed on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line 4'4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the bed.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the side rails of the bed having the usual joints 8 with the usual rail stubs 4 and 5. The usual transverse bar 6 connects the stub 4 at 7 at the foot of the bed, while a similar head bar 8 connects the stubs 5 at 9. Forming a part of the stubs 4 and 5 or otherwise connected thereto are the plates 10 and 11 having the straps 12 and 13 whichsurround the foot and head posts 14 and 15, so as to slide thereon, said plates 10 and 11 act to cover the slots in said posts 14 and 15, there being braces 16 between the stubs and said plates. The posts 15 are connected by the usual transverse bars 17,"which are connected'by the'usual filling'vertical rods 18, while the posts 14 are connected by the usual transverse bars 19, which are likewise connected by the usual filling rods 20. The posts 14 and 15 are made hollow, as shown having solid lower ends 21 provided with the usual caster receiving sockets 22, in which conventional form of springs 23 is arranged to holdthe casters in place. Arranged telescopically in the posts 14 and 15 are rods 25, their lower portions being threaded through the stubs of the side rails, their lower extremities being swiveled in the sockets 26, while their upper portions are swiveled in the bearings 27 of the caps of said posts 14 and 15, and provided with suitable knobs 28, whereby the rods may be adjusted. It will be observed that when any one of the rods is adjusted the side rails at one end or the other may be raised and lowered, thereby accommodating the bed to the unevenness of the floor, as well as leveling the spring (not shown) which may rest upon theside rails in the usual manner.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. An adjustable bed comprising the side rails, the foot and head boards having openings to receive the side rails, and a threaded rod swivelly mounted in each post of each foot and head board and thread through the side rail for adjusting each end of each side rail.

2. An adjustable bed comprising foot and head boards having corner posts, each being provided with elongated openings, side rails having detachably jointed stubs passing through said elongated openings, said stubs having plates covering said elongated opening and provided with straps surrounding and slidably mounted upon said posts, a threaded rod swivelly mounted in each post and threaded through each stub, whereby each end of each side rail may be adjusted independently.
