To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN W. HALE and JOHN Ganar, citizens of the United States residing at Grand Prairie, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Boll Breaker and Cleaner; and we do hereb declare the following to be a full, clear, an exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful boll loreaker and cleaner, and an object of the I invention is to provide a device of this character, involving essential and practical features of construction.
One of the features of construction is the revision of a casing having a pair of revouble cylinders provided with boll breaking arms, adapted to intermesh with additional boll breaking arms projecting from rockable shafts mounted in the lower portion of the casing. As the cylinders revolve the boll 'breaking arms act to break the boll cotton as 'it-is forced through the casing by a current of air.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of means for simultaneously rockingsaid rocking shafts, to adjust the boll breaking arms of said shafts in different positions, said means including means to hold the rockable shafts adjusted.
Another feature of the invention is the revision of a4 downwardly' extending trash ox extending from the casing, there being screening means between the trash box and between the cylinders but offset` below t erefrom, and through which the trash passes. In other words, the
screening means separates thc trash and metes, the trash and inotes passing into the box, whereas the cotton bells pass on A through the casing to its outlet.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a removable hood, which may be removed, in order to remove the cylinders for repairs and cleaning.
In practical elds the details of construction may be subjected to alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, kas hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a casing having an inlet end 2 provided .with a passage 3, and a discharge end 4 provided with a discharge passage 5, and through which casing and said passages cotton bells are forced by a current of air. The side 'and the top of the casing are cut awa-y, to receive a rhood 6 corresponding in shape to the cutawaylportion 7 to lit the same. The sides of the casing adjacent the lower edges of said cutaway portion are provided with metal bars 8, bolted in place as at 9. Said bars 8 are provided with bearings 10, in which the shafts 11, 12 and 13 are mounted, and when the hood G is in place shown in the drawings the bearings 141 of the sides of the hood coperatc with the bearings 10 of the bar 8, to hold the shafts in place. The bearings 14 are formed in a bar 15, which is bolted to the bar 8, and is also carried bythe hood. The hood is fastened in place as shown at 1G by suitable bolts or screws. Upon one end of each of said shafts 11 and -13 is a pulley 18, and mounted on one end of the'shaft 12 (which is an idle shaft, in so far as rotating any member on the interior of the casing, is concerned) is a pulley 19. Passing over one of the pulleys 1S and under the pulley 1S), then over the other pulley 18 is a suitable belt` 20, adapted to be driven by any suitable means (not shown), for imparting motion to the pulleys and said shaft. The purpose of providing the idle pulley 19 is to insure greater belting surface between the belt and said pulleys 18, shown in the drawings. Bearings 14 of the hood have 22, said tubes are provided with suitable oil cups 23, in order to keep the bearings well lubricated. Keyed at 2t upon said shafts 11 and 13 are cylinders 25 and 26. The cylinders are provided with spokes, hubs and rims 27, 28 and 29. The rims 29 are constructed with depressions 30 in bet-Ween said spokes.

@l v i 1,1103176 A sheet metal casing 31 having longitudinal depressions 32 engage about the rims of each cylinder, the longitudinal. depressions of each sheet metal casing fitting in the'depressions of said rims. A metal band surrounds each end of the sheet metal casing to hold the same to said rims, there being rivets for holding the bands and the sheet metal casing and the rims together, said rivets and bands are designated by the numerals 33 and 34. They cylinders are provided with cotton boll breaking arms 35 and 36, which are curved as shown and in theform of blades. These arms are provided with tapering por tions 37 andreduced extensions 384 having exterior threads 39. The tapering portions and the reduced parts 37 and 38 pass through the bands and the bars 39, there being spring washers and nuts 41 for holding said arms in place, said spring washers are interposed between the iuts and said bars 39. The bars 39 connect the bands of each cylinder, as shown in vthe drawing, and are arranged adjacent the longitudinal depres-` sions 32 of the casing 31. The portions of the bars between the bands constitute means to receive the reduced parts and tapering portions of other arms, as shown. Boltcd to the sides of the casing are plates 42 having bearings 43, in which the pintles 44 of the shafts 45 and 46 are mounted. These arms 47 and 48 have tapering and reduced parts 49 and 50, assing through the shafts 45 and 46, there eing nuts and spring washers 51 and 52 for holding said arms 47 and 48 to said shafts or rods 45 andas. o
In Fig. 1 it will be observed there is provided fou'r rocker arms 52, 53, 54 and 55., onebeing carried by oneend of each of said shafts or rods 45 and 46. The arms 52V and 53 are connected by a link 56, and the arms 54 and 55 are connected by another link 57.
Pivoued at 58 to the bar 8 is an operating lever 59, and pivotally connected at 60 to said lever are connecting barsor links 61 and 62. The link 61 is connected to the arm 53, whereas the link 62 is connected to the arm 54. A segment rack 63 is secured at 64 to one side of the casing, and the lever 59 is provided with a dog 65 to en gage any one of the teeth of the rack, to liol the lever 59 in adjusted positions, there being a hand grip 66'having a rod connection 67 with the dog for operating the saine. When the lever 59 is operated in one direction or the other, the arms 47 and 48rmay be disposed in different positions, as shown in full and dotted lines 1n the drawings. The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l.
