This invention relates to improvements in gages and it more particularly relates to certain improvements in a form of ad ustable gage and marker, such as descrlbed and illustrated in my Patent Number 1,066,592. One of the objects of this invention is to provide an improved and easily operated means for alternately holding and releasing the handle and allowing it to be swung into folded position. i
- Another object of the invention is to provide an improved form of cutting or marking members and to generally improve devices of this character without materially increasing the cost of manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings which supplement this specification, Figure 1is an elevation view of my gage andmarker in its operative position on a clapboard Fig. 2 is an enlargedlongitudinal sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 an enlarged end elevationview.
In these drawings in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several views, the main body or frame of the device comprises an elongated bar 5 consisting of two apertured flanges 6 and 7, respectively, which extend at right angles, to each other. The flange 6 is provided with a segmental extension 8 at its medial portion having its arcuate edge provided with a series of notches 9. The flange 7 carries a series of cutter disks 10, rotatably mounted upon the screws 11, washers 12 being disposed between the respective disks and the heads of the screws 11. Each end of the flange? is turned at right angles to the major portion thereof, as at 13, and on each riglitangled extension or flange 13 is secured a gage arm 14: by means of screws 15. The upper end of the arm 14 is slotted transversely, and one of the screws 15 extendsthrough the slot and engages with the flange-13, sofas to allow for limited lateral adjustment of the arm 14 on the flange 13.
Thejhandle member 16 ispivotally connecte'd'to the extension 8 by means of the screw 17 and carried by the handle member and arranged upon the end face thereofis a spring-419, one end ofwhich is rigidly secured to the handle at 20, while the other end thereof is removably engaged with the membcrin various adjusted positions. The handle 16is provided with an opening 21 through which the pin 22 is adapted to extend so that the spring member may be readily released by pressing upon the pin from the upper face of the handle. The pin 22 is carried by the spring 19 and suitably connected thereto as shown at 23. The free notches'9 to yieldably retain the handle end of the handle 16 is offset from the majorportion of the handle, the lower plane of the disk 10.
in the operation of the device, the plane surface 16 rests upon the surface of the clapboards to be gaged and marked, while the arms 14 rest against the vertical corner strip or other member against which the clapboards are to be fitted. The handle 16 is then manipulated for imparting a slight longitudinal movement to the bar5, so as to cause the disks 10 to cut into the surface of the clapboard and mark it at the proper place to be sawed off and fitted against the upright: member. When it is desired to change the angle of the members 5 and 16,
with relation to one another, it is only necessary to push downward against thebutton or stud 22, for releasing the engagement of the elements-8 and 19, whereupon the device may be-folded or adjusted, in an "obvious manner. 7
