Description
i tirant 5E/E5 praticare,
LEVI W. FIFIELD, OE WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS.
.E ARNOLD AND HENRY E. WEBSTER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent No. 111,049,1-1ated January 17, 1871.
I IMPROVEMENT lN SHIRT-BUTTONS OR STUDS.
To alll whom it mayeonoern.-
Bc it knownthat I, LEVI W. FIFIELD, et Worcester, inthe county of Worcester and State ofMassachnsetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a button with a knob of snitableshape attached to it by means of a shank, on. which is placed a spring, for'a purpose that will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring' to the annexed drawings, in which- 'Figure 1 is a central cross-section of .-inybntton and v Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, reversed, showing the position of the dilere-nt parts when the button Ais muse.
A represents the button, which may be made of metal or other suitable material.
B is a knob, of oblong or other suitable form, secured on the under side ofthe button Aby means of a shank, d, which is permanently fastened to the'knob B and screwed or riveted into the center ofthe button.
c represents an elliptical spring,.each leaf ot which has an oiiset, g, at its center, the object of which is to ,embrace tightly the shank d, and thus prevent thel `b'e placed in aline with the knob B, and then the knob and 'spring passed through the slit made to receive it.
This being donc the button is turned half-way round,
the spring holding itself from turning, being in the garment. l
It can be taken out by merely reversing the operation.
, The shank (Z may be made either square or oval andthe spring fitted to it.
I am aware of the patent ot1 Geo. M. White, Au gnst 13, 1867, who employs a spring turning upon a square stud, but surrounded by an elliptical box. This latter I dispense with, making my spring answer the purpose ot' the two partsin XVhitcs patent.
`Having thus fully described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The elliptical spring c, eachleat of which heilig provided with an oiset, g, and operating in conjunction with button A, knob B, and :shank el, in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEVI W. FIFIEL'D. Titnesscsz l C. W. Es'rnnook, J. W. BATTELLH.
