To all whom it may, concern Be it known that I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Steel Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
In the manufacture of steel ranges difficulty has heretofore been experienced in properly alining the smoke opening formed in the rear section of the top plate with the stove pipe above said section and the flue beneath it. This difliculty is due to the fact that the casting in cooling often contracts unequally, making one end or the other shorter than it should be, so that when the plate is assembled on the range, the
smoke opening will not aline with the stove pipe and the flue, with the result that the flange or flanges commonly cast integrally around the smoke opening will not telescope with the stove pipe or the flue. In such cases, the section of the top plate is useless and must be thrown away.
It is the object of my invention to pro duce an improved flue structure which will not be affected by the unequal contraction of the top plate and which will be simple in construction and easily assembled.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation with parts broken away or removed, illustrating asteel range having a flue construction embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rear section of the top plate and partsimmediately asso ciated therewith. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views taken in the planes of lines 3 34 4, respectively, of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the cap plate which is mounted on the upper end of the flue.
Referring to Fig. 1, A indicates the body of the range, B the rear Wall of the fire box, C the smoke flue, and D the pipe into which the smoke passes from the flue 0. As will be understood, the pipe D is carried by the upper frame of the range. In the construction shown by way of example in the drawings, the top plate is made in sections suitably secured together, the rear section E being shown in plan in Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, the smoke opening 6 through the top section E is made somewhat larger than necessary, and the collar 7 over which the lower end of the pipe D fits is made wholly separate from the GEORGE E. P oKUr,
plate E, said collar having a flange 8 at it lower edge of suitable width to overlie and close the opening-6. A cap plate 9 is mounted upon the upper end of the flue C, being positioned beneath the plate E. Said cap plate has an openinglO of suitable size pref- I erably being substantially the size of the interior of the collar 7 and therefore of less size than the opening 6 in plate E. The cap plate 9 is of the same shape as the flue C which is in the present instance quadrangular, and said cap plate has a depending flange 11 fitting into the upper end of the flue C, said flange having a shoulder 12- abutting against the upper end of the flue to determine the proper position of the cap.
The cap may be securedto the flue C by any I suitable means, such as rivets 13 passing through said flue and the flange 10. The
collar 7 may be secured in place by suitable bolts or rivets 1 1 which pass downwardly through openings in the flange 8, through the plate E, and through openings 15 in the cap 9, the collar 7, plate E, and cap 9 being thereby rigidly secured together. If desired, these parts may be assembled on the. stove and openings then drilled for the reception of the fastening devices 14.
As will be seen, the unequal shrinkage or contractingof the plate E will not affect the arrangement or efficiency of a flue constructed in accordance with my invention, inasmuch as the parts may be secured together with the collar 7 properly positioned.
in spite of the fact that the opening F- may not be centered with respect to the flue C or the pipe D which is carried by the upper frame of the steel range. By this construction it is possible to utilize unequally contracted top plates which were heretofore useless because they could not be centered on the stove.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a stove, the combination with a flue and a top plate having an openingtherein above said flue, of a cap comprising a platelike portion lying beneath said top plate and having an opening therethrough registering with the opening in the top plate, said cap further having a depending flange fitting in the upper end of said flue, and a pipe collar positioned above said top plate and separate from said plate and from said cap, said collar' having a flange overlying the edge of the opening in the top plate, the interior of the and a top plate having an opening therein above said flue, of a cap separate from said top plateand flue and having a depending flange fitting said flue, said cap being positioned beneath said top plate and having an 0 enin therein and a i e collar above 10 p a: a P P and separate from said top plate and said cap and being suitably secured in place.
