SAD IRON HOLDER APPLICATION FILED JULY 25. 1913.
Patented Sept. 8, 1914.

CLAUDE n. DODGE, oFs'r, GEORGE, UTAH.
SAD-IRON HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 25,1913. ,Seria1No.781,184. I j
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE R. DODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. George, in the county of lVashington and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements, in Sad-Iron Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hangers, and more particularly to the class. of devices for holding electric sad irons.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein a sad iron of the electrically heated type may be conveniently held while being heated or when not in use, the hanger for the iron being readily foldable so that the ironing board on which the same is attached can be stored in the least possible space when not in use without requiring the detachment of the device therefrom.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the hanger for the sad iron is swingingly connected to a clamp which can be readily fastened to a table, ironing board or other support, the hanger being swingingly supported by the clamp so that it may be folded when not in use and when in use can be locked against folding movement.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the ocket plug of the electric wire on the sad iron can be held when disconnected from the iron without the accidental dropping of the plug upon the floor and also the iron will be suspended from the ironing surface of the support when not in use.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and etlicient in its purpose, readily and easily fastened on or removed from a support, and also which may be manufactured at a minimum expense.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, andpointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of an ironing board showing the device mounted thereon and in upright position, the sad iron being shown by dotted line hung upon the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the hanger folded.
the hanger in raised position, the said hanger being shown by dotted lines in folded position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the linet',4 of Fig. 3. f I Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the device comprises a substantially U- shaped clamp 5 in one limb of which is adjustably mounted a binding screw 6 formed with a winged end 7 and a head 8 as usual. The opposite or other limb of the clamp 5 is formed with spaced vertical ears or bearings 9 between which is swingingly mounted a base block 10, the same being supported upon a pivot 11 engaged in the said ears 9 which forms the axis for the base block 10 so that it may swing laterally to opposite sides of the clamp 5 for a purpose presently described. Mounted in the base block 10 and rising vertically therefrom is an upright for standard 12 formed with a free hook end 13 on which is adapted to be engaged an electric sad iron for suspending the same above a table top, ironing board or other support to which the clamp 5 is applied. Also engaged in the base block 10 in alinement with the upright 12 is an arm lt which is disposed in upwardly divergent relation to the said upright 12 and is'formed with a curved end 15, and between the said upright 12 and the arm 14: is adapted to be engaged the plug carried by the electric wiring connection or cord when the plug is detached from the .sad iron.
Swingingly connected to the base block 10 is a substantially U-shaped latch bail 16 which is adapted to straddle one of the ears or bearings 9 on the clamp 5 when the upright 12 is arranged vertically so as to lock the same in such position, the said bail 16 being formed with in-turned shoulders 17 which frictionally engage the ear or bearing 9 over which the same straddles to positively lock the base block 10 against turning movement. It will be apparent that when the latch bail 16 is disengaged from the ear or bearing 9 of the clamp the said base block10 can be swung laterally in either direction to opposite sides of the clamp for the folding of the device or the lowering of the hanger of the upright 12 and the arm 14 carried by the block against Patented Sept. 8,1914.
Fig.3 is an edge-elevation of the device with the support to which the clamp is connected when the device is not in use. lhe closed end oi? the latch bail 16 serves as a hand hold for manipulating the same.
The said latch bail 16 is connected with a pivot 18 which is passed. through the base block 10 between the upright 12 and arm so as to engage the latter and thereby fasten the upright and arm in the base hi and also to swingingly connect the latch bail 16 to the latter. 1
rom the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will he clearly understood, and theretore 2: more extended exglanationhas been omitted.
What claimed is 1. The combination with a clamp, of parallel oars formed on one limb no, swi ging member pivotally etween the ears, an upright enl the member and having a free arm mounted in the said memher at one si to of the upright, and means swingingly connected to the member and engagealile with one of the ears for 1oeking the said member against swinging movement.
ber at one side of the upright means swingingly connected to the member and engageable with one of the ears for locking the said member against swinging movement, means mounted in the clamp for securing it to a support, and a pivot for connecting the first-named means to the member and also for securing the upright and arm i the said member.
3. The combination with a clamp, a memher having a free hook end, an arm on the member to cooperate with the same to form a substantially if-shaped fork for receiving the cord of an electric sad iron, and means for locking the member and arm in upright si'ippoiiting relation on the clamp.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
