Specification of Letters Patent.

exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skillediin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same..
This invention relates to improvements in go carts and more particularly to those having means for collapsing the side members toward each other. i,
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed go cart of this character which may be collapsed into small compass and which is provided with a hook shaped handle which may readily be hung on one arm. Y*
W'ith the above and other minor objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and .shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a. side elevation of my improved go cart parts being broken away and in section; Fig. 2 is a rear view in which the parts are also broken; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. l is a rear view of a portion of the back of the go cart; Fig. 5 is a side view ofthe go cart in folded position the canvas covering being entirely omitted; Fig. 6 is a rear view of the device in folded position with the canvas omitted; Fig. 7 is a front elevation of a portion of the back showing a modified form of construction; and Fig. 8 is a detail section on the line 8 8 of Fig.- 7.'
In the accompanying drawings, my improved go cart is shown as comprising in general, side members forming seat and back supports, supporting wheels for said side members, toggle links connecting said members and an upright operating bar for actuating the toggles or back supporting portions of said side members, said bar being provided with a hook shaped handle at its upper end.
Coming now more particularly to the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6, the side members referred to above, are each formed of a single piece of round or half round tubing bent to form upright back rsupporting bars 1, horizontal seat supporting bars 2 and front wheel supporting standards 3.
At suitable points the seat supporting bars 2 and the back supporting bars 1 are connected by curved arms 4 which are also preferably constructed `of tubing.
The upright bars 1 are connected at inter- .vals by toggle links 5 pivoted at their outer ends to said upright bars 1 and at their inner ends to an upright operating bar 6 which is provided at its upper end with a hook shaped handle 7. Pivoted as at 8 to t-he upper ends of the bars 1 are inclined brace bars 9 .which are'connected at their inner ends by a bolt 10.
` Securcd at a suitable point on the rear face of the bar 6, is a bracket or stop 11 provided with upright lingers 12. By refer- Ience to the drawings, it will be seen that when the toggle links 5 are extended, the
bolt 10 carried by the brace bars 9 will project betweenk the fingers 12 and a thumb nut 13 is then screwed on said bolt. By this construction, it will be obvious that the side members will be prevented from collapsing as longas the thumb nut 13 is in contact with the outer sides of the lingers l2 but when said thumb nut is loosened and the operating 'bar 6 is pushed downwardly,
the side members will be brought together by the action of the toggles 5. y The horizontal sea-t supporting bars 2 are connected near their rear' ends by toggle l links 14E yand the wheel supporting standards 3 are connected near their upper ends toggle links 15. Canvas 0r other -4 suitable material 16S-is secured in any manner, to the seat supporting bars 2, the toggle links 15 and `is then extendedupwardly and sev cured to the upright backsupporting bars '1, as clearly shown in Fig. `3 of the drawings.
I have shown the side members provided with depending springs 17 having supporting stub 4axles 18 on which wheels 19 are journaled but it will be clear that runners could be substituted for the wheels 1-9. Whether wheels or runners be employed, the stub axles 18 are connected by toggle links 2O on which slides a sleeve 21 for a posed over the central pivot of the toggles Q connecting the stub axles 18,*the toggles 5, 14, and l5 are extended and the bolt l() carried by the brace bars 9 is secured between the fingers l2 of the bracket l1 by the thumb nut iVhen in this position 'the canvas 1G forming the seat and back of the go cart will also be extended. Nhen it is desired to collapse the go cart, the sleeve Qi. is pushed laterally by the foot of the operator until the central joint of the toggle links 20 is vfree to more. The thumb nut 13 is then loosened and the opera-ting bar 6 pushed downwardly and by so doing the toggle links will bring the side members of the go cart together into a very small space. The handle 7 may then be hooked over one arm ot the operator and when in this position, is very easily carried.
if desired the space between the curved arm si and the bars l and 2 may be left open but l preferably secure canvas or other suitable material to said handle and bars to 'jorm closed sides for the go cart.
ln the forni of the invention shown in Figs. '7 and 8 the brace members 9 connected to the side bars l are shown as provided with slots 10 and the operating bar 6 is provided with a slot 6 and through these slots 10 and 6 passes a bolt 13 provided with a suitable thumb nut. Although l prefer the form of fastening means hereinbefore described, this securing means answers the saine purpose.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details may be resorted to withy out departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
lWhat l'. claim as new is:
l. A go cart comprising side members adapted to collapse toward each other, an operating rod disposed between said members and links pivoted at their inner ends to said operating rod and at their outer ends to said side members, said operating rod being extended upwardly and formed into a hook shaped handle.
ZA go cart comprising L-shaped side bars, the horizontal portions thereof forming seat supports and the upright extensions thereof forming back supports, an upright operating bar disposed between said upright extensions and having a hook shaped handle at its upper end, links pivoted at their outer ends to said upright extensions and at their inner ends to said operating bar,
,inc-lined brace bars pivoted at their outer ends to said upright extensions and coacting means carried by the inner ends of said brace bars and by said operating bar for locking said brace bars to said operating bar thus holding said L-shaped side bars in extended position.
3. A go cart comprising lfshaped side bars, the horizontal portions thereof forming side supports and the upright extensions thereof forming back supports, an upright operating bar disposed between said upright extensions and having a hook shaped handle at its upper end, links pivoted at their outer ends to said upright extensions and at their inner ends to said operating bar, a stop secured to said operating bar and having upright lingers spaced from said bar,` inclined brace bars pivoted at their outer ends to said upright extensions, a bolt passing through their inner ends and extending between said iingers and a nut on said bolt.
t. A go cart comprising side members,
. toggle links connecting the same, means :tor
holding said links extended and an upright connecting bar for operating said links, said bar having a hook shaped handle at its upper end, stub axles carried by said side mehr bers, toggle links connecting said stub axles and means for holding the toggle links connecting said stub axles in an extended position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
