Description

F. L. SALTZMAN & E. J. CROGETT. OIL BURNER. APPLwAToN HLBD JUNE 19* 1912.
Patented Sept. 8, 1914.
@vivente/n 619mm, vronlf L. alizman 8( WQ 4f/275,( Ernest d. Eroc/feit To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, FRANK L. Samnaun and ERNEST J. CnooKn'rr, citizens ot the United States, residin at Oakland, in the county of Alameda an State of California, have invented certain new and yuseful llmprovements in Oil-Burners, of which the ollowing is a specification.
Our present invention relates to oil burners, which, when working normally, eject the fluid in an atomized state.
The burner is particularly adapted to burn the lower grades of distillate, and for use in small lants and heating furnaces.
The principal objects of our invention are to provide a simple and ecient oil burner wherein the atomizing of the fuel is attained without the aid of moving mechanism, Lbut,
by the movement of fluid, the desired pressure of which is attained by action of ,heat
of the burner itself, when working.
Further objects of our invention are to render the device so simple that its making, to a considerable extent, may be accomplished by the use of standard pipe and ittings, whereby the cost of repair 1s reduced, and the repair conveniently effected.
In the drawings, lforming a part. of this specification: Figure 1 is a fragmentary, horizontal, section through a furnace, showing theapplication of our invention'thereto.V
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the lines 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central, longitudinal, sectional view through what we hereinafter term the atomizer, parts being shown in elevation to disclose details of con struction. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the nozzle used in connection with the atomizer. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fi 3. Fig. 6 is a central'longitudinal sectional view through what l hereinafter term a steam generator.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The burner is shown, in Figs. 1 and 2, by way of example, as applied to a furnace, a fr ent of the hearth 7 and wall 8 being disc osed. A n atomizer 9 projects through the wall 8 and includes, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, a tubular member 10 ha screw threaded ends. At that end of the tu ular member 10 projecting into the fire box of the furnace, a. nozzle 11, which is in the form of a cap having a transverse slit or egress opening 12 on the face, is s crewed thereupon, while the other end of said tube eplciannoa oi man rareza.

has screwed thereupon a 'F mayzloe otlthe mandami i v Extending into theftub r Ymembmwdg'is a relatively smaller tubular meinberld-ivith its end directed toward the nomlell. This tubular. member 1a is ada tedorfconnect'ion with a pipe 15 leading omithe sourcaio liquid fuel supply, under' presen-rn. a valve 16 being interposed iiiy the oonduitfforcm@ trolling passage of thetuel to tubularfmein'- bari-1d. .A .bushing 11%,!.snirronxidingftnbular member 14, andzscreww the openingsot member 13 concmn'ic to the amis oil member 10,-; clos such.; tubular' member, about tubular o 1-f o roer la, atthe endiopposite mom-nozzle 11.
Near its inner end the tubular memberll proyided with a pluralityof apertures 18 adartavaodeliranarlaralinaf at @anaal liquid fuel from adjacent such en and a drum like member 19 lits into said tubular member 10 and closes the end of said tubular member 1d, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 oi the drawing, this member 19 being inter-v mediate the openings 18 oi tubular member 14. and egress opening 12 of nozzle 11. Spiral grooves 20 are formed in the periph` ery of drum like member 19, so that fluid passing through tubular member 10, before leaving egress opening 12, travels in a whirl# ing path past such member 19 and the particles are thoroughly broken up and intermixed before leaving the atomizer.
' A steam generator, designated generally at 21, is disposed preferably below, in proximity to nozzle 11, to be acted upon by the flame which is to issue from `such nozzle. 'lhis steam generator is conveniently formed ot' a horizontally disposed tube 22 ha'vinga l 23 at one end and a socket 2d at the other end. The T 23 is preferably disposed so that the opening having its axis at right angl to that of the straight openings, is directed uppermost, and has a plug 25 screwed thereinto, ,ri-om which a pipe 26, leads throu h wall 8 to the com lementary opening of e betere mentioned 13. The pipe 26 is preferably provided with a valve 26' to control movement of uid therein. The sachet 241, is provided with a plug 27, to which leads a pipe 28, having a valve 29 di Y d therein, and connected with a source o water supply under pressure. rThe other straight openm ot the T 23 is connected with a refuse pi 30, controlled by valve 3l which is norma y closed during the operation of the burner lont which new loe opened Wlien starming;V np or in blowing on the looiler., A reeepteole 3 ie disposed loelow tlie ste-em generator 2l, end the nozzle il, so than: oil may drop by grerity to receptacle 32 and be collected therein. 'lliis receptacle may conveniently rest upon the lieerth 'l et the furnace.
llhe operation et the device ie as lollowst llpon opening valve 16, e quantity of oilis permitted to tlow from nozzle 11 into recepteole 32, the 'valves 29 end 3l loeine closed. the deelreelv quentity el oil is kdispoeed in 'the reeeptnele .32, the veli/e 16 is closed, the oil is ignited end Weiter permitted to tion? to tnloe 22h37 openinp Welnee 29 end 3l., lll'nlre 26 is else o 'enedbznd ze soon ze steam ie generated in tn e 22 and issues from nozzle ll, relire l@ is o' ened end the fuel ie Tloreed ilroin the nozz e li, having been interzed end etere-ized by the movement el the etezm, end the drum like member '19. The feel et nozzle ll is then ignited end the steem 1generntor tlien receives its heet oin enen neme, the @lerne in receptacle 32 dying out when the oil in such receptncle is een enrned.,
nrronzz Wife @teneztubular burner nozzle :tor eiland the like comprising 1n combination, an outer Cesi-ng, an inlet et one end of said casing for 3o tending nearly to the other end thereof, said 35 oil' pipe being provided with apertures opening substantially at right angles to the exis oLE the nozzle, and u cylindrical member closing the end of said oil tube :ind being intermediate seid apertures and said outlet,40
seid cylindrical member substantially filling the cross section oli said nozzle, except for lspiral grooves in its ieee through which oil end stenin niey escape.
ln testimony whereof We grn our signnll5 tures in presence of two Witnesses.
