BEAN-SEPARATING MACHINE.
T 0 all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bean-Separating Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a ppcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bean-separating machines.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine so constructed that the rapid sepa ration of the various grades of beans may be attained.
The object of my invention is attained by progressively distributing beans over the upper laterally sloping surfaces of an ad justable inclined table and the laterally sloping upper surfaces of an adjustable auxiliary inclined table. The beans are distrib uted along the main inclined table by means of closely spaced scraper blades. The perfeet shaped beans roll downwardly and over the sides of the main table, while the rough or misshaped grade of beans, clay and foreign substances are retained and distributed over an auxiliary inclined table, where they roll or slide downwardly over the side edges thereof. The badly split beans, clay and foreign substances, owing to their reluctance to roll or slide, are retained by the scraperblades and delivered over the end of the inclined auxiliary table.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a simple, inexpensive, yet eflicient machine for separating beans that consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, or the equivalents thereof, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a plan view of a bean separating machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail showing in end elevation the front sprockets, chains, main table and a pair of scraper blades. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the hinge connection between the two inclined tables.
As clearly shown in the drawings, 1 desig- Spceification'of Letters Patent.

nates the supporting frame of my bean-separating machine. One or more main inclined tables 2 having laterally sloping up per surfaces 3 are suitably mounted at one end on'the supporting frame. Each main table :2 is mounted at its front end upon a cross-bar a carried in vertically adjustable blocks 5, which blocks are carried in guides 6 and adjusted up or down by means of adjusting-screws 7. The main tables are adapted to set at an incline and the upper ends of the tables are adapted to move, thus changing the inclination of the tables when the adjusting screws 7 are turned.
A plurality of scraper-blades having a straight section 8 and the opposed diverging or diagonally disposed sides 9 extending therefrom are secured at their ends in suitably spaced relation, to drive chains 10, which chains are mounted over sprockets 11 suitably supported at each end of the machine. The sprockets are driven by any suitable means, as a belt over a stepped cone pulley, as shown in Fig. 1. The scraper blades have their lower edges 12 shaped to conform to the laterally sloping surfaces of the inclined tables. The diagonally disposed ends of the scraper-blades assist the rolling tendency of the perfect beans and utilize the reluctancy of the poorest split beans and foreign substance to roll or slide by crowding them toward the center or high part of the tables and finally depositing them over the end of an auxiliary table.
Suitably hinged, at 13, to the lower end of the main table 2 is an auxiliary table 1 1 having the laterally sloping upper surfaces 15. The auxiliary table 1 1 may be inclined to any desirable degree of slant independent of the main table, by means of a cord 16, or its equivalent.
The auxiliary table let is an important feature of the invention and it saves a grade of imperfect shaped beans known as second grade, whereas, with prior machines of this type, this grade of beans has been delivered with the clay and wasted.
Suitably supported stationary hoppers 17 located at the upper end of the machine are each provided with a hinged bottom 18 having its free end engaging the top edges of the straight sections of the scraper-blades 8 as they travel downwardly over the main table, thereby automatically feeding beans from the hopper upon the main tables between the scraper blades. The feed is accomplished by the up-and-doi n movement that is imparted to the hinged bottom. lhe quantity of beans to be delivered to each space may be regulated by the slide 19 adjustably mounted on each hopper.
A suitable tray is arranged beneath the machine containing three compartments Jr, 13 and. (I, but their eipiivalents may be en1- ployed in the form of spouts or the like.
From the above desiription, it will. be observed that .l provide a machine ilt'or separating beans, 'u'lu :bv the perfectly shaped beans will roll down the laterally sloping upper surlfaces oi the main inclined table andv drop over the side edges thereof into compartment A; and 'n'hereby the rough shaped beans, split beans and the clay and :loreign substances will. be moved by the scraper blades to the inclined auxiliary table, The auxiliary tables bein at a greater incline than the main table, the roughly shapi'ed and best grade otli split beans will roll or slide down the laterally sloping upper surfaces oil? th 2 auxiliary table and drop over the side thereof into con'ipartinent l3, while the poorest, split and the foreign substances will be moved by the scraper blades and dropped over the end. of the auxiliary table, owing to their reluctancy to roll or slide down the laterally sloping upper sin--- laces ot the uxiliary table.
ll ai'iu thus d eseribed my invention, What l claim and desire to secure by Letters l9; tent is:
1, 1.. A. bean separating machine con'iprising av sul'iporting ilranie, an adjustable loi'igitu- (anally inclined. table having a laterally incliued si'lrilace and niorabl: scraper blades baring a straight back and diagonally disposed sides (lllSPOSGil above said table, for the purpose set forth.
