KEY-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1914..
A pplicationfiled October 8, 1913. Serial No. 794,134.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Oscar: S. Llnns'rnon a subject of the King ofSweden, and a mmdent of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and and useful Improvements in Key-Guards, of which the following is a specification. r
The object of this inventionis to produce a device of the class specified, having fea tures of novelty and advantage.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a front view of the lock set, showing my key guard attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end View of the guard.
The particular object of this invention is to provide a device which can be engaged with a key and secured to the door, andpreferably the knob, to hold the key and prevent its being pushed out of the lock.
In the drawings, a denotes the escutcheon plate of a lock set, 6 the knob spindle, 0' the knob, (Z the key, of the type comprising a stem having a bit at one end and a head at the other. The guard, denoted generally at 10, comprises a pair of arms 11, 12, the former of which has a lat-eral extension 13 at one end thereof, and at the end of which lateral extension the other arm 12 is pivotally connected centrally of this lateral extension, and depending therefrom isa fin 14: twisted at right angles to the general plane of the arm 11.
In the use of this device the key is turned so that the key head is in a horizontal position, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2; .the fin is introduced into the key head and turned so that it lies at right angles to the key head; the arms are then folded together, lying on opposite sides of the knob shank, and are held in position by the yoke 16, which may be conveniently connected with the device by the chain 17. It will thus .be seen that in this position of the key the bit is crosswise of the key-hole and cannot be pushed out unless it is turned, and it cannot be turned because of the engagement or the guard with the key head.
This device is extremely inexpensive to manufacture; it may be readily applied to a key and secured in place, and effectually prevents the removal of the key or tampering with the lock and the unauthorized opening of a door from without.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a lock set including a knob and its spindle and a removable key, of a guard to prevent the removal of said key, said guard comprising a pair of arms pivoted together at one end and lying on opposite sides of said spindle, a fin projecting from one of said arms and adapted to be engaged with the head of said key when it is positioned crosswise of the key slot, and a yoketo hold the free ends of said arms in position against said spindle.
2. The combination with a lock set comprising a knob and its spindle, and a key adapted to be removably positioned below said'knob, of a guard for said key comprising a pair of arms pivoted together at their yoke forthe free ends of said arms, and a key-engaging fin depending from the lower edge of said lateral extension and arranged at right angles thereto.
