Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 8, 1914:. Application filed February 28, 1914. Serial No. "821,743.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. LEYH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeannette, in the county of VVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-Holding Devices, of which, the following is a specification, reference being had dition, or whenever it is necessary to hold the bird stationary for other purposes.
A still further object of the invention is a simple device of this character which may be easily and quickly adjusted, according to the size of the chicken, and which may be very expeditiously manipulated to quickly clamp the legs of the fowl so as to hold it securely 011 the saddle upon which the body of the fowl is placed. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices'of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a poultry holding device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is an elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a portion of the standard, saddle post and saddle, the latter being shown broken away and in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a side view of the saddle and a portion of the post connected thereto, and Fig. 6 is a detail plan View of one of the leg clamping devices.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanying drawings by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the base of my device, the same being of any desired size, shape or design and being preferably formed of wood, although any other substance or material may be employed. Secured to the'base 1, in any desired way, and rising therefrom preferably at the centerthereof, is a tubular standard 2, which is designed to receive the vertically adjustable saddle postor stem 3, the
latter being bifurcated at its upper end, as
indicated at 4: to receive the saddle 5, which is secured thereto by screws or similar fastening devices as shown and which is preferably of- V-shape in cross section and padded in any desired Way so as to form a comfortable rest for the body of 'the'fowl.
The seat or saddle post 3 is formed with a longitudinally extending series of trans verse notches 6, preferably beveled as shown,
and the standard 2 carries a spring pressed latch 7 formed with a nib or lug 8 adapted to extend therethrough into engagement with any of the notches so as to hold the device in the required adjusted position with the saddle 5 at the necessary elevation according to the size of the fowl to be held on and by the device. By beveling the notches 6, it is obvious that the saddle post 3 may be raised or extended very readily and held at the required elevation and by pressing upon the handle or lower end of the latch 7, the nib or lug 8 will be retracted and the post may be lowered to the required extent. Preferably the latch 7 is pivotallymounted intermediate of its ends between ears that are formed on a band or collar 9 which encircles the standard 2 and which is secured thereto in any desired way.
To securely hold the legs of the fowl I provide clamping devices 10 in the form of sectional rings, the sections being hingedly connected together as shown and each ring being positioned on diametrically opposite sides of the base with the standard 2 between them. In the present embodiment of the invention one section of each ring is formed with an opening 11 by which it is adapted to be inserted over and held upon an upright 12 in the form of a rod secured at its lower end to the, base 1. The other section of each leg clamping ring, designated 13, is formed at its relatively free end with a spring latch or snap 14: whereby the two sections may be securely fastened together to hold the legs of the fowl and be readily opened whenever required to release the legs.
From theforegoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the
operation of my improved holding device for chickens and the like will be apparent. In the practical use of the device the saddle 5 is raised to the required elevation, according to the siZe of the chicken to be held and the fowl has its body placed within or upon the saddle and its legs securely held by the clamping rings 10 whereby the fowl will be held securely while being put in show condition or operated upon, as the case may be.,
While the accompanying drawing illus trates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes maybe made in the combinations, arrangements and proportlons of the parts, without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined 4 1. A device of the character described ineluding a base, a tubular upstanding standard' mounted thereon, a post telescoping with said standard, a saddle V-shaped in cross-section connected to the upper end of said post, and means carried by the standard to hold the saddle post at diiferent elevations;
2. A device of the character described ineluding a base, a standard mounted thereon and extending upwardly therefrom, a saddle post telescoping with said standard and provided with a bifurcated upper end, a saddle Vshaped in cross section secured within the bifurcated end of the saddle post, and means carried by the standard and engageable with the saddle post to hold'the saddle at difierent, elevations.
In testimony. whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
