1910, for improvements in Adding and Listing Machines and relates to control of linespacing mechanism whereby provision .is made for doing single column recording with the paper carriage in either of two lateral positions.
Reference may be. had to Patent No.-
924,1l8 issued June 8, 1909 upon the joint invention of Jesse G. Vincent and myself, as to the general character of the machine to which the form of embodiment of my invention herein detailed is especially adapted. That patent discloses an adding and listing machine of the well known Burroughs type, having a s ecial equipment whereby the lateral y shi table paper carriage is automatically reciprocated' between two-columnar positions for the purpose of listing in parallel vertical columns. The
improvement which is the subject of said patent extends to an equipment whereby the automatic reciprocation of the papercarriage may be discontinued at will by depressing a special key provided for the purpose, so that when desired single column listing may be done as in the ordinary Burroughs machine. In connection with the the paper car riage in the construction of that patent provision is made for having the line spacing effective and ineffective in order that items recorded in two successive operations ofthe machine will be on the same horizontal line. Thus, when the machine is operated with the carriage in the left hand one of its two columnar positions, line spacing. will occur after the item has been printed and during the latter half of a cycle of operation of the machine, that is to say during thereturn ;stroke of the operating handle. Also during this return stroke of the operating handle the paper carriage will be shifted to the right. In this shifting of the carriage to the right the line spacing mechanism is disabled so that when the machine is then operated with the carriage occupying the right hand columnar position, no line spacing will occur. Inasmuch as line spacing could only occur, in the construction of said patent, with the paper carriage in its left hand position, ro VlSlOIl was made for preventing the disa lement of the carriage reciprocating means wlth the carriage in its right hand columnar position.
The object of the present invention is to provide for single column recording with paper carriage in either of its two positions.
Consequently means for preventing disablement of the carriage reciprocating mechanism when the carriage is in its right hand position are omitted, and special provision is made for restoring to operative condition or reenabling the line spacing mechanism at will when the carriage is in this right hand position, such line spacing mechanism havlng been disabled, as in the construction of said patent, as an incident to the shifting of the carriage from its left hand columnar position to its right hand columnar position.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of an adding and listing machine of the Burroughs type, having incorporated in it a form of means for carrying out my present invention, the pa per carriage being shown in its left hand position which in this rear elevation is of course the right hand position; Fig. 2 is also a rear elevation but with the paper carriage omitted in order to better portray the line spacing mechanism, and this View further diflers from Fig. 1 in illustrating a condition which would usually exist with the paper carriage in its right hand position which of course, in viewing the machine from the rear as in this figure, would be the left hand position; Fig. 3 is a view of the same general character as Fig. 2, the condition illustrated being also one which exists when the carriage is in its right hand positionthough differing from the condition illustrated in Fig. 2 in that the line spacing mechanism is reenabled; Fig. at represents a vertical front-to-rear cross section of a sufficient portion of the machine to illustrate the carriage reciprocating mechanism together with the line spacing mechanism; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken substantially on .the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. v
Inasmuch as the presentinvention bears no "direct relation to the registering or adding department of the machine, that has been omitted fro-m the drawings as also the well known setting up or amount-controlling devices which determine the extent of movement of the registering levers. The latter are of the ordinary form and arranged in the type of machine which I have chosen for the purposes of disclosing an embodiment of my invention. One of these levers appears in Fig. 4 and is designated 611 and carries at its rear end the usual series of type plates 618, it being understood of course that this is the left hand one of an alined series of theselevers.
On the back of the machine is mounted the usual track 2 upon which the carriage frame 3 runs, and there i the usual cradle 4 superimposed upon said carriage and carrying the roller platen 5for the type plates 618 to strike against when driven by their hammer 715. The carriage is recipro'cated by the same sort of mechanism as illustrated in the aforesaid Patent No. 924,128. The familiar rock' shaft 100 has an arm 20 carrying the pawl 21 to operate an actuating notched disk 23 which are secured to the hub of a beveled gear. 19. The latter is loosely mounted upon the shaft 100 and meshes with the beveled pinion 18 secured to a shaft 17 which has a crank arm 16 at the rear (Fig. 1) coupled by link or 'pitman 15 to a slide bar 14 having an upwardly extending branch 14 notched to engage the tabulating finger 7 on the paper carriage. Thus far described the construction is the same as disclosed in said patent and the latter may be referred to for further particulars of the carriage reciprocating mechanism which haveto do with the locking of the same against accidental movement and also the particulars of the line spacing mechanism in so far as concerns the step-by-step turning of the platen roller and the communica tion of movement from the shaft 100 to the feed pawl operating upon the platen. In the letter connection it will sufiice for the purposes of the present disclosure to designate the vertical reciprocating slide strips or bars 87 and 89, the latter of which is directly actuated, first downwardly and then upwardly, in every operation of the machine and has a beveled lug 96 (Figs. 1.3) to act upon a similar lug 95 on a coupler piece or dog 92 which is pivotally'mounted upon the 'sion of the coupler pieceor other slide strip or bar 87. As in the case of the similar coupler piece or dog of the construction shown in said patent, the spring 97 tends to engage the lug 95 with the lug 96 on the slide 89 so as to cause the slide 87 to move down the slide 89, and further more the coupler piece or dog has an undercut or shouldered downward extension 92.adapted to' be acted upon by a stud of the bar 14 for the purpose of disengaging the lugs 95 and 96 when the carriage shifts to, its right hand position. w
In carrying out the present invention the stud which acts upon the downward extendog is not fixed upon the bar 14, as in the case of the stud of the construction shown in said patent, but i movably mounted upon said bar in order that the object of the present invention may be attained, to wit a restorin to operative condition or a renabling of the linespacing mechanism when the carriage is in its right hand position. To thisend the stud, designated 14, i carried at one end of a lever 14 pivoted upon the bar 14 at 14 and drawn upward as to its arm carrying said stud 14, by-a spiral spring 14 connecting it to an upper portion of the said bar 14, which spring normally holds the other arm of said lever against a stop stud 14 on the bar 14' as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the stud 14 is normally in a position corresponding to that of the similarly designated stud in the construction of said patent, that is to say a position adapting it to operate upon the coupler piece or'dog 92 to disable the line spacing mechanism in the manner described in said patent and illustrated in Fig. 2 hereof. However, by rockingthe lever 14 against the stress of the spring 14 the stud-14 can be disengaged from the vertical shoulder of the coupler piece so as to permit the latter to reengage-the lug 96 of the slide bar or strip 89 a shown in Fig. 3. The lower por tion of the coupler piece is elongated to provide an extended under edge so that in such case the stud 14 will, upon movement of the reciprocating bar 14 to the right as viewed from the rear, resume its normal position in line with the vertical shoulder of the coupler piece. The means for rocking the said lever 14 are of the following description: A key 25 (Fig. 1) similar to that correspondingly designated in the aforesaid patent, is similarly located and surmounts a stem 26 sliding through the keyboard plates and upheld by a spring'29. This key stem is jointed to the forwardly-extending arm of a lever 25 whose rearwardly-extending arm is jointed to a downwardly-extending bent link 25". The latter at its lower end is jointed to a crank arm 25 secured to a short rock shaft 25 journaled in a bearing on the back panel of the machine and carrying at its rear end an arm 25 which terminates in a downwardly-inclined finger 25 as shown in Figsal, 2, and 3. When the reciprocating bar 14 is over to the left as viewed from the rear of the machine, a stud 14 at the end of the lever 14* opposite that where the stud 14 is located, l'ies over-=the said finger-25 as shown in Fig. 2. It follows that upon depression of the key 25 and consequent upward rocking of the. arm 25 said finger 25 will wipe under said 'stud 14 and rock the lever 14 to the position shown in Fig. 3 thereby disengaging the stud 14: from the vertical shoulder of the coupler piece 92 and permitting the latter to resume engagement with the slide bar or strip 89. Line spacing can then take place with the carriage in the right hand position.v The key 25, besides performing the function above described, serves in the same way that the correspondingly designated key in the construction of the aforesaid patent does, to disable the carriage reciprocating mechanism, the key stem 26 being slotted at its lower end to embrace a stud on which is pivoted a lever 28 having at its upper end a stud occupying an oblique slot in the key stem 26 so that upon depression of the latter the said lever 28 will be rocked. As in the.construction of said patent the lever *28 engages one arm of a bell crank lever 30 (Fig. 5) whose other arm is formed as a shield to move into the'path of the pawl 22 andprevent said pawl from actuating the notched .disk 23. Inasmuch as the object of the present invention is to provide for single column listing with the carriage in either of its two columnar positions, of course depression of the key 25 and consequent 'disablement of the carriage reciprocating mechanism should be permissible when the carriage is in its right hand position as well as when it is occupying its left hand position. Consequently the bell crank lever 30 does not have the branch which appears in construction of said patent (there designated 33) 'whichin the former construction strikes against the web of the beveled gear 19 when the carriage is in the right hand position, whereby depression of the key 25' is prevented.
It will be seen that the above described mechanism is well adapted to accomplish the object primarily stated but it is-to be understood that the invention is capable of adaptation to other types of machines than here illustrated and that it is susceptibleof being variously modified within the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the combination of a laterally shiftable paper carriage, line-spacing mechanism including a spring-held coupler piece, means for reciprocating the paper carriage including a member having a movably mounted tappet to displace said coupler when the the character described,
paper carriage, line-spacing mechanism including a spring-held coupler piece, means. for shifting the carriage back and forth including a reciprocating bar, a spring-held tappet lever on said bar adapted to displace said coupler, and manipulative means for displacing said lever.
3 In a machine of the character described, the combination of a laterally shiftable paper carriage, line-spacing mechanism including a spring-held coupler piece, means for shifting the carriage back and forth including a reciprocating bar, a spring-held tappet lever on said bar adapted to displace said coupler, a depressible key, and a finger operated thereby and arranged to displace said lever.
4:. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a laterally shiftable paper carriage, line-spacing mechanism, a prime mover, means for shifting the paper carriage oppositely in successive operations of said prime mover, means for disabling the ine-spacing mechanism as an incident to the shifting of the carriage one way, and manipulative means common to the carriage shifting means and said disabling means for disabling both.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a laterally shiftable paper carriage, line-spacing mechanism, a prime mover, means for shifting the paper carriage oppositely in successive operations of said prime mover, means for disabling the line-spacing mechanism as an incident to the shifting of the carriage one way, and a key and connections for disabling both the carriage shifting means and the line-space mechanism disabling means.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a laterally shiftable paper carriage, line-spacing mechanism including a. spring-held coupler piece, means for reciprocating the paper carriage includmg a member having a movably mounted tappet to displace said coupler when the carriage is moved one way, and manipulative means for disabling said tappet and the carriage reciprocating means.
7. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a laterally shiftable paper carriage, line-spacing mechanism including a spring-held coupler piece, means for shiftmg the carriage back and forth including a reciprocating bar, a spring-held tappet lever on said bar adapted to displace said coupler, andmanipulative means for displacing said lever and disabling the carriage reciprocating means. a I
