Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 14, 1913. Serial No. 773,801.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM P. ADLETA and OSEA M. ADLE'iA, citizens of the United States ot' America, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Crossing Signals, of which the following is a specihcation. i
This invention relates to improvements in railway crossing signals and has particular application to an electrically energized signal of this class.
In carrying out the present invention, it is our purpose to provide a railway crossing signal whereby both a visual and audible signal will be given at the crossing in the event of a train approaching sucl'i'crossingthereby advising pedestrians and others at the crossing or approaching the saine of the proximity of the train.
It is also our purpose to provide a rail-l way crossing signal which will embrace the desired features ot' simplicity, etliciency and and maintained at a minimum expense and one which will be reliable and effective in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claini.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure l is a plan view ot a railway crossing showing the position ci our improved signal with respect to such crossing. Fig. i2 is a vertical sectional view through the signal casing showing the inner mechanism iii end elevation. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
.Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the numeral l designates parallel lines oi' rails forming a railroad trackway over which trains or cars arc adapted to travel, while the numeral 2 designates a roadway or a second trackway intersecting the lines of rails of the first' trackway at right angles thereto.
Our improved crossing signal is indicated as an entirctyby the letter S and is located adjacent to the point ot vintersection of the lines of' rails l, l and the roadway 2 sotliat a pedestrian or the operator of a vehicle upon the roadway 2 will be advisedasto the proximity of a train on the lines of rails 1, 1. In the present, instance, this crossing signal comprises a. hollow standard 3 having one end embedded in the earth and the opposite end terminatinga suitable or convenient distance above the ground.

Arranged within this casing 4 and appropriately fastened to the bottom wall thereof is an electric motor 5 havingv keyed upon one extremity of the shaft -of the armature thereot a pinion 6 nieshing'witha gear wheel 7 lkeyed upon a shaft 8 journaled4 in the end walls of the casing 4 andextend ing longitudinally o'l' the lattter above the motor This shaft 8 has suitably fastened upon each end thereof a hub from which radiates a number of blades 9 adapted to rotate under the actionV of the shaft 8 and motor 5 so as to signal a person approaching the1 crossing from either side of the lines of rai s 1, 1` il Suitably fastened to the top Wall ofthe casing 4 is a bell or gong 10 disposed Within the influence of a tapper 11 pivoted upon a bracket 12 arranged within the casing 4 and depending from the top wall thereof, the tapper projecting through the top wall ot the casing and has the lower extremity of the shank or stein thereof equipped with a` dog 13 disposed within the viniuence 'of a ratchet wheel 14 keyed upon thepshaft 8 adjacent to the gear wheel 7. Thus, it Will be seen that as the armature shaft of the motor 5 rotates motion will be transmitted to the shaft 8 through the medium of the pinion 6 and gear 7 thereby rotating the signal blades 9, while at the same time, the ratchet wheel 11- will rotate and so oscillate the hammer or tapper llto sound the bell or gong 10 whereby an audible as Wellas a visual signal will be given. 7
