Description

aura Sta.
WILLIAM H. TOWERS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 110,878, dated January 10, 1871,
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF COATING SAD-IRONS, &c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Townes, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coating and Protecting Sad-Irons and ailors Irons; and do hereby declare that the followin; is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of this invention is to apply a coating to smoothing-irons, sad-irons, tailors irons, and the like, used in ironing and pressing cloths and for laundry purposes generally, so that corrosion and rusting of the face of the iron are prevented and a smooth surface maintained.
It is necessary that the face of the iron should receive a smooth polish by grinding and burnishing. This surface, if not carefully kept from moisture, will rust and corrode. To avoid this requires great care and attention, and after all the care that can be taken they frequently rust and are spelled while on the hands of the dealer or nialmtitcturcr.
My invention prevents all liability to rust by a cheap and simple process, and consists in covering; the face, and other parts if desired, with metallic zine by the process known as galvanizing, wlliclnbeine well understood in the arts, does not need further explana- \Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iaient of the UnitcdStates, is
1. The improved process herein described for coating and polishing sad-irons and like articles.
2. As a ncwarticlcof manufacture, a sad-iron coated with zinc or other metal, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above-described invention I have hereunto signed my name this 19th day of December, 1870.
Witnesses:
