Be it known that I, WILLIAM; Basri-ionoMiiw, a ycitizen of the United States, residino' at Chicago, county of; Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Cylinders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a washing machine and particularly to a construction wherein the parts are readily removable for renewal. n

The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of head having means for the'removable. attachment of staves thereto and the seating of ribs therein, together with means for placing a binding` hoop under tension and rendering its removal easily effected. i

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims. v

Like numerals of reference refer to .like parts in the several figures of the drawing. The head comprises a hub portion .10 which is recessed to receive the trunnion plate 11 carrying the bearing trunnion 12. This plate is removably secured by means of bolts 13 entering the hub portion 10. Radiating from this portion is a series of spokes or arms 14 which carry at their outer ends the curved rim 15. This rim is provided with a series of rib sockets 16 disposed in alineinent with the spokes 14 and adapted to receive the ribs 17 which extend into the interior of the cylinder as shown in Fig. 3. These ribs are secured in position by means of bolts 18 extending therethrough and also through the ends of the spokes in order to connect the rim to the spokes and also retain the rib in its socket. The staves 19 are secured to the rim by means of bolts 20 extending therethrough so that they may be removed whenever necessary or desired for renewal. The rim is formed with a tension portion 21 at the door 22 of the cylinder and this portion is provided with an inset 23 from which a ytightening bolt 211 eX- tends to the binding `hoop 25' which surrounds the outer face of all of the ribs and staves. By tightening the bolt 24:, the hoop is drawn into the recessed portion and properly bound against the ribs and staves, while the loosening of ythis bolt relieves the tension and permits its removal. -f y At the inner face ofthe head, a head plate 26 is disposed which forms a closure ateach end of the cylinder and lis provided at its periphery with a series of recesses 27 i adapted to receive the inwardly projecting portion 28 of the ribs 17. These ribs are each provided at their vends with ar seat 29 which partiallyy embraces the socket 16 of therim and at the inner end. of this seat, `a kerf 30 isforniedv into which aportioii` of thehead plate extends. This plate is also 4formed with a lateral flange 31 to form a close joint with the curved edge of the rim.` The segmental edges 32 of the head plate are adapted tov seat in kerfs 33 formed in the staves 19 as shown by dotted lines inFig. 3. By this construction, the heads are provided with recesses by which the ribs are firmly retained in position and removably connected thereto and the spokes being disposed in alinement with the rib sockets firmly brace all of the parts. Both the staves and trunnions are removably secured to the head so as to be readily renewable, while the binding hoop4 is adapted to be tightened by the screw carried by the head, thereby providing means for tightening or loosening the hoop when desired. The connection of the head plate with the staves and ribs forms a tight joint and retains this plate in position. The invention therefore presents a simple, efficient and economically constructed form of renewable cylinder in which the parts can be readily replaced when necessary from wear or other causes and can also be assembled by an ordinary workman.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a washing cylinder, a head comprising a hub having radiating spokes, a rim having inwardly projecting rib sockets arranged on the ends of said spokes, ribs seated in said sockets and secured therein by bolts passing radially through said rim, ribs and spokes, and staves arranged on said rim between said ribs.l v
