The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same. l
To IIa-110m it may concern:
e it known that I, FINLAY F. HAMILTON, of Green liay, in the county oflrown and State ot' Wisconsin, have invented ancwand improved Hay-Press; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reti-.renee heilig had to the aceon'ipanying.drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in hay or analogous presses, and consists in the combination with the ease and follower ot' grooved ribs, and a crane for elevating the follower, all as hereinafter speeilied.
Figure l represents a sectional elevation of 1nyimproved hay-press; v
Figure 2 is a top-view of the same; and
'Figure 3 is a view of one of the doors of the case detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate. corresponding parts. i
A is the case, which is preferably arranged vertically on a suitable platform, B. It is provided with doors, O, near the bottom, on twoopposi'te sides, through whieh to discharge the linished bale.
1) is the 1ollower,working to and fro in the case on guiding-ribs, li, which have a groove in them for the. operaiing-cords F, which are attached at both ends to the whaling-drum or shaft Gr and pass under the guide-rollers ll, up along the case on each end, and over the. follower, as shown, in the grooves of the guides 11. The follower has appropriate notches in the edges for these guides.
The \\'iinlingdrum is provided with' an enlarged part, 1, over which the operating-rope K works, being drawn oli' from it by a horse or other power, for winding on the rope i" and drawing thefollower down. When the eords if and the follower are drawn back, the rope li winds on again.
The follower is raised by a cord attached to it at L,
and working through a. pulley-block, M, on the crane N, attached to the side of the ease, the said cord being operated by the attendant.
Then the follower is raised, the cords F are slipped off at the ends and suspended onthe top of the case, as shown at O, the case being provided with notches, P, for the purpose. The follower is then swung around ont of the way, for filling the case, and suspended en the crane.
Q represents cords suspended fromthe case to hold the doors C up while the bale is tied and removed.
The bottom of the case is provided with ribs, It, formingclmnuelsforthe tying-cords S, which are placed therein and made fast at each end to a pin T, after passing through slots, V, in the doors,`t0 be retained whilethe pressing is going on.
The lower face of the follower is also provided with similar ribs, U, forming channels for passing the ends of the cords S through, for tying when the pressing is complete.
The winding-drum may be operated by .any other rmeans, if preferred. It is provided witliI-a ratchet,
W, and pawl, X, for ,holding against going back until required. f
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The arrangement of the swiveled crane N, provided with the pulley M, with relation to the case A, follower' D, and cords F. as and for the purpose specitied.
2. The combination, with the case, follower, and the cords, of the grooved l'ibs E. substantially as specified.v
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 18th day of April, 1870.
FINLAY F. HAMILTON.
