the city and county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have inventedcertain new yand useful Improvement-s in Devices forOntting Soles'for Boots andShoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of thev same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a' plan View of my improved device for cutting soles for boots and shoes, and

To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and usethe same, vI will pro-.

-The nature of my invention'cnsists# l First, in the combination with the cutting-die of va separate pressing-rim with pressing-plate, and a uni-t. ing device, as hereafter described.
Second, in the combination, with the cutting-die, pressing-rim, and pressing-plate, of holding-dogs, as hereafter' described. j
Third, in the combination, with the holdingdogs, of devices for operating. the same,vas hereafter-described.
Fourth, ,in the combination, with the cutting-die and pressing-plate, of a discharging-plate and springs, Aas hereafterset forth.
Fifth, in a device forcnt'titg solesfor boots and shoes, the parts thereof being constructed and comblued, as hereinafter described...
In the drawing, thc part marked A represents the `cutting-die, consisting of a metallic band, bent into the required form, with'its lower edge sharpened to cut the leather, and its upperedge made square and level, te receiving the pressing-plate B, to which' it is secured, in this instance, by means of a pair of hold ing-bolts or dogs C, as hereafter explained.
rlhe pressing-plate B is provided at its upper side with a pressing-rim, D, made in .a similar form to the cutting-die A, and rigidly secured to the plate B at its lower edge, while its upper edge, on which the platen ofthe cutting-press descends, is made level,
Guides E are secured to the top of the plat-e B, between v which are arranged the slide pieces F that carry the holding-dogs C, by which thev cutting-die is held tothe plate B.

The inner ends of the slides F are turnednp to form thumb-pieces H, by means of which the slides If and dogs C can be readily operated.

slides F, near -their outer ends, from which they project downward throngli'slots I formed in the plate B, 'with their ends C turned outward so as to catch. into holes formed in the upper part of thedie A, and thereby retain said die in position.

The screws L- are' fitted to work` loosely through the plate-B, theirheads being suiciently largento Yprevent them from dropping through.
Ooiled-wire springs M` are placed around the screwsv or pins L, between the vplates B and K, as indicated in iig. 2.' The device caribe usfed with a series of di'erentsized dies, the only requirements being that the pressing-plate B should be as large as the top of the larg'- 'est-sized-die, and .the discharging-plate K should be smallenongh .to work within the interior of the smallest-sized die ofgthe series.
The dies can be readily interchanged bysinrply pressing the" thnmb-pieces H toward each other,
which operation nnlocksthe-dogs O, and releases the die from the plateB.
It will be observed, bythose skilledin the art, that my improved device possesses many advantages, inasmuch as the nse-of the pressing-rim D permits of the die A being made of anarrow band of steel, and vconsequently the cost of the die is greatlyrreduced.
The height of the rim D is such that the operator :has sufficient space to handle the'device, and the pro'- jecting edges of the plate B are a great assistance in raising and plaein g the die in the proper position upon the leather to be out.
Then again, by the use. of my invention, the old narrow dies, used in cutting leather, by theaid of a mallet can 4be readily changed so as to be couveniently used 'with the patented power-cuttingpresses 4recently introduced, 'thus saving a greatexpense in the construction of dies preparatoryr to the adopt-ion of such machines.
l1f preferred, the pressing-plate B and rim vD may be rigidly secured to the top of the die by bolts, screws, or other suitable fastenings, although I prefer the plan shown in the drawing.

. 1. The combination, with the cutting-die, ofa separate pressing-rim, with pressing-plate anduniting gevicc, substantially as and -for the purposes set orth.
