SAMUEL E. BURCHELL, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIG'NOR OF ONE-I-IALF T0 JOSEPH A. KOMER, OF PATTERSON, NEW JERSEY.
SHOVEL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL EDWARD BnnoHnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic {1116 State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a shovel blade so constructed that it may be quickly and easily fitted to a shovel whose blade has become worn out or to some other suitable in'iplemcnt, such as a fork, and when so adapted will produce an implement whose blade and handle members are substantially as rigidly associated as the blade and handle of any shovel having these parts secured together by rivets or other permanent means.
.tcferring to the accompanying drawing, Figure l. is a perspective view showing the inu'irovcd shovel blade applied to a shovel whose blade has become more or less worn; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of what is shown in F ig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof,
showing the blade in section; Fig. 4 shows.
the improved blade applied to a fork; and, Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of what is shown in Fig. 4.
In said drawings a and Z) are, respectively, thehandle and blade of a shovel whose blade has become more or less worn away, as shown, the handle being received in and riveted or otherwise permanently fixed in the socket ot' the blade; 0 designates my im proved shovel blade, which-may be shaped according to the use to which it may beput, but it is perferably somewhat wider than the blade of the shovel 41-?) which is to be assembled with the blade 0 as the handle therefor.
To the back of the blade 0 is permanently secured. as by rivets d, a transverse metal strap 6 having its intermediate portion elevated or spaced from the back surface of the blade 0, so that the arch thus produced forms with the blade a socket.
Forming an integral part of the middle upper portion of the blade is a split collar or band f having its ends 9 arranged in par allel planes and penetrated by the bolt h. The ends of the-collar preferably project rcarwardly, so' that the intact intermediate part of the collar will be located with respect Specification of Letters Patent.

to the handle where the greatest strength is required; and said ends are adapted to be spread apart to admit the shaft portion of the. handle. .With the blade 0 thus constructed,-the old shovel ab as a handle is fixed thereto thus: Its blade 7) is forced into the socket formed by the back of the blade and the strap e and then, its handle having been made to be embraced by the band f, the bolt [2 is tightened up to clamp the old shovel in place securely as a handle.
The construction shown in Figs. & and 5 is substantially the same as that in Figs. 1 to 3 excepting that two sockets i are formed atthe back of the blade 7' and therewith by the strap in by bending the strap outwardly between the members of each of two pairs of rivets 7 whereby the strap is secured to the blade. These sockets are then adapted to receive the outer tines of the fork m, the shaft of which is clamped by the split collar n on the blade j having the bolt 0 and being otherwise substantially similar to the collar f already described.
To impart increased rigidity to the connection between the blade and its handle, relieving the collar of some of the strain thereon, the blade in either case is preferably formed with a channel in alinement with and adjoining the collar and adapted to snugly receive the shaft of the handle, such channel being produced by bending the metal of the blade forward. as shown at p in Figs. 1, 3 and .t in forming the blade.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A shovel blade having on the.back thereof a socket closed at the back and adapt-ed to receive the lower end of a suitable handle member said blade havingat its upper end a split collar and means to bind the collar rigidly around the handle member, substantially as described.
2. A shovel blade having, on the b ack thereof a socket closed at the back and adapted to receive the lower end of a suitable handle member said blade having at its upper end a split collar and means to bind the collar rigidly around the handle member, the upper portion of said blade immediately below and alined with the collar having a channel at the back thereof adapted to snugly receive said handle, substantially as idly around the handle member, substandescribed. I tially as described. 10 3. The combination of a shovel bladeand In testimonywhereof I afiix my signature an arched piece secured to the back of said in presence of two witnesses.
