To all whom it may concern:
Be it, known that LCARL L. JAEGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mahwah, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recording Devices, of which the following is a specification;
The invention relates to recording apparatus, and more particularly to apparatus of this character in which the record is effected through suitable printing means adapted to make an impression upon a record sheet only at predetermined periods.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide means for recording the apparent movement of the needle of a compass carried by a ship or other traveling object, and thereby-provide a record of the course of the same.
The invention contemplates, furthermore, a disengagement of the member, having the real or apparent movement, from its support during the printing operation and a printing by said member; and, moreover, simultaneous change of further printing means during such disengagement. The disengagement is arranged, furthermore, to take place in such a manner that the member will be properly returned to its normal position after printing.
The nature of the invention will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a recording compass, as one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 1s a vertical section of a similar apparatus, and illustrates a modification therein. Fig. 4 is a plan thereof. Referring to .Fig. 1 of the drawings, 20. designates a suitable casing within which is swung on suitable gimbal journals 21 and 22, the compass casing 23. A transverse plate 24 is secured thereto, and to this is centrally.

The card and printing annulus may, of course, be one. The characters on this annulus may be formed in any desired manner; but I have shown the same, for the purpose of reducing the weight of the card, as small points raised from the surface of a thin strip of light metal, such as aluminum. Above this card and over a small segment thereof is the record tape 29 which is taken from a reel 30, preferably outside the casing 20, and is brought through an opening 31 in the casing 23, then over the said compass card and between said card and an inking pad or ribbon 32 secured to the transparent cover of casing 23 and adapted to cooperate with the aforesaid segment of the said card. The record tape, after passing over suitable rollers and advancing mechanism hereinafter more fully set forth, passes out through suitable openings in the two casings and 23 where it may be received in any suitable raised oif the pivot 25, and the segment cooperating with the record strip is brought into contact with said strip, forcing the same against the inking pad 32. The disengagement of the card and needle is effected by means of a platen 35 mounted about the pivot -and provided with a rim 36 adapted to. fit under the printing annulus 28 and about a downwardly directed flange 39 of This securely positions when the platen is depressed.
To raise the platen 35, a piston 40 working in a cylinder 41 is connected thereto through piston rod 42, plate 43 and rods 44. Fluid under pressure or vacuum is arranged to be supplied to the said piston 40 at predetermined intervals; and is led into the cylinder 41 through a suitable hose connection 45 which passes through the gimbal journals to the outside of the casing 20. The fluid employed for the, purpose of operating the pis ton 40 is derived from any'suitable source (not shown) and its delivery to its cylinder 41 is controlled by a suitable clock 51, which clock is designed to rotate a valve-piece 52 ment of the ratchet wheel as the platen 35 returns from its raised position, thus advvancing a fresh portion of the record strip 4 platen 35 and thereby the compass card with into the position to be printed upon. On the upward movement, the pawl slips by the teeth of the ratchet wheel. A vent is provided in the cylinder 41 to relieve the pressure within said cylinder when the fluid supply is shut oil", and permits the return of its needle, which readily return under their own weight, the flange 39 insuring the centering of the said compass card and needle.
Referring to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, a modification in the manner of operating the printing elements is shown. In this embodiment, the compass card 27 and needle 26 are mounted as before upon the pivot 25 which is carried inthis instance by a movable plate or bar 70,
. the saidbar being secured to oppositely disposed vertical tubes 7-1 and adapted to move therewith. A cross-bar 72 is secured to the upper ends of these tubes and carries at right angles thereto a platen 50 and is provided', also, with a downward projection 73 In the axis of the'pivot 25, the said projec-.
tion terminating a slight distance above the needle bearing 74: to insure against displacement of the compass card and needle. The lower ends of the tubes 71 are fitted about corresponding vertical guide rods 75 fixed to the compass casing23. vAplate 76 connects the lower ends of these tubes, and coiled springs 77 about the rods 75 act against this plate to normally hold the compass needle and card in the normal raised position. I
A plate 78 is secured to the compass casing 23 near the bottom thereof and above the plate 76; and from this plate extends downwardly a cylinder 79 having therein a piston 80 bearing against the plate 76. When fluid under pressure is introduced into the cylinder 79, the piston is advanced. and thereby depresses the tubesj71 and with them the compass card and needle toward the printing wheel, 82 and record strip 83 over which is transversely directed an inking ribbon 84. The printing annulus of this card as well as the time wheels and other printing devices then make their various impressions upon the record strip. The tape in this embodiment ispreferably taken from a reel 85 mounted within the compass casing 23 and the fluid to operate the piston 80 is controlled as in the previously described embodiment through'the time actuated valve 52. The motion of the time wheels and other wheels to change the indication of the same and of the inking ribbon to present a fresh surface, is derived from the movement of the plate 76 through suitable intermediate mechanism. The printing tape may be variously located with respect to the type, or ink may be applied directly to the type.
For the sake of simplicity, I have merely disclosed the printing of the course 90, Fig. 6, the time 91 and the lubbers line 92. It is understood, however, that various other records may be printed on the strip'29 by providing the necessary printing wheels, which may be set by hand or otherwise'controlled, as is well understood. The printing of the lubbers line 92 is efi'ected by a pivoted type member 93 supportedin an adjustable carriage 94 secured to the inner'wall of casing 23 and adjusted by means of the graduated head 95. As the compass card is moved upwardly, in the embodiments disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2, the type member 93 bearing the lubbers line is moved upwardly and thereby into contact with the strip 29 and forces the same against the ink pad 32 to print the record of the lubbers line.

A recordingdevice, comprising: a movable member, and means to support the same; printing means controlled by said movable member; a record sheet, and means able member; suitable'p atens; and means to effect an additional relative movement between the said .record sheet and the said printing means in a direction to brin the same and said platenstogether to prmt a record and to disengage the movable member from its support during the printing period. 7 p

A recording a compass, comprising: a magnetic needle, and'means tosupport the same; printing means carried by said compass needle; a record sheet, and means to advance the same with respect to said compass needle; suitable platens; means to efi'ect a relative movement between the said record sheet and the said printing means carried by the compass needle in a direction to bring ....awmuwulWWWt.

A recording compass, comprising: a magnetic needle, and means to su port the same; a printing annulus carrie by said compass needle, and suitable projections thereon to designate the corresponding points of the compass; a record sheet, and means to advance the same with respect to said printing annulus; means 'to effect a relative movement between the said record sheet and the said rinting annulus carried by the compass n le in a direction to bring the same and said platens together to print a record and to disengage said needle from its support during the printing period.
5. A recording device, comprising: a mov able member, and means to support the same; printing means controlled by said movable member; a record sheet, and means to advance the same with respect to the movable member; suitable platens; means to effect an additional relative movement between the said record sheet .and the said printing means in a direction to brin the same and said platens together to print a record and to dlsengage t e movable member from its su port during the printing eriod; and ad itional printing means s'et y the'relative movement between the record sheet and the said former printing means.

A recording device, comprising: a movable member, and means to support the same controlled by said movable member; printing means; a record sheet, and means to advance the same with respect to the movable member; suitable platens; means to efiect a relative movement between the said record sheet and the said printing means in a direction to bring the same and said platens together to print a record and to disengage the movable member from its support during the printing period; fluid pressure means to control the movement of the. means elfecting the printing; a time operated device controlling the admission of fluid to the fluid pressure means; and advancing means for said record sheet and actuated by said fluid pressure means.
7. A recording device, comprising: a movable member, and means to support the same; printing means carried by said movable member; suitable platens; a record sheet; a cylinder, and a piston therein; means to admit fluid under pressure behind said piston; means normally disengaged from said movable member to lift same off its support and to bring the printing means carried thereby into contact with the record sheet and between said platens to print a record thereon; means connecting said piston with said lifting means; advancmg means for said record sheet; and means connecting said piston with said advancing means.
