FILMREEL AND casina.
To ally/whom t may concern Be it known that I, HARRY J. TROXELL, a citizen of the VUnited States, residing at Gettysburg, in the county of Adams, vState of Pennsylvania, have invented certainl new and useful Improvements. in Film Reels and Casin-gs.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact ldescription of the invention, such as willenable others skilled' in theart to which it appertains to make and use-.the same.
lThis invention relates to certain novel .and useful improvementsl in a combined reel and casing for motion .picture films. It is required by the authorities that when a reel of this character is it must be placed in a metal case and inclosed in wood or ber boxes. It is, therefore, the custom at the present time to place the ordinary film reel in a metal casing and inclose this casing in a box for ship'- inent.` his reel which consists of a hub and the endV plates or flanges has attached to the hub a smalll clasp to which: one end of the 4filmis attached, and when completely reeled the film is secured by a rubber or paper .band surrounding the saine. This ordinary type of reel usually has the end disks or plates perforated, and the operator may -reach through' these perforations for the purpose of attaching the endof the film to the clasp. f
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a device which is capable of fulfilling the functions of both a reel and a casing so that in preparing the film for shipment it is unnecessary to employ an ad :itional metallic easing for receiving the ree L Still a further object of my' invention .is the provisionl of a reel having solid orimthehub be- 111g provided with a novel form of filmattaching 'clasp which extends beyond the eriphery of the-reel when the endof the is to be attached so that the'o'perator 'need-not reach in "through the body of the character, but may reel t fasten the film. t th I It is-also m ur ose o provi e e ree portion pro e1yi gf tIhe device with danged rim or' ban s -ftting around the periphery so that when the parts are assembled a coinplete protective casing is provided, 'which may not only be employed to comply with the'laws'astothe shipment of films of this be used tov incase the l Specification of Letters Patent. vApplication led February 7, 1913.

the clasp being shown in exed position to receive the end ofthe Flg. 2 is av view in end elevation of the device with the flanged rim or band sections applied' to the reel't'o incase the m. Fig. 3- isa vertical .sectional v'iew taken on the line 3,-3 of ig. 2. Fig. e is a detail viewof the flanged rim or' band. Fig. 5 isa sectional view 'thoughthelm engaging clip on the line 5-'5 o Fig. l.
Referring now to the accompanying drawingsv in detail the niiiei-'l 1'- desighates the hub or drum of the \reel which is axially perforated as at 2. At each end of the drum is secured a relatively arge imperforate disk or plate 3, which is referably formed of any suitable hard'- metal, such as rolled steel. These circular plates or disks, together with the hub form the reel or spoolproper, and when surrounded by the attached flanged rim sections,
plates form faces or sides of the casing. In
. order to attach the -film to the reel I'fasten to the hub by means of small tacks 4 or other fastening devices a tape 5 which when extended radially vwill projectbeyond the periphery of the reel. To the free end of this flexible tape which is designed to receive the-end of the -Iilm so inthe winding operation both the ltape and the vfilm may be' reeled in the usual To provide a casing for the film', as when it is desired to ship the-latter, I employ a pair of semi-circular rim sections 9 hinged at their adjacent ends at 10, while the opposite end of one section is rovided with a tongue 11 slotted as at 12A or the reception of the turn button 13 carried bygthe'adjacent free end ofthe opposite rimsection. -Ea'ch .0f said 'rim v'sections is provided with the these Bauges-being designed when the band or rim is 'positioned on the `reel to embrace the peripheral edge' portions of the plates or disks of the reel, as shown in Figs. 2 and as hereinafter described, these semi-circular inwardly extending ianges 14,'

material which will serve the purposes 1n What I claim is: a protective casing of this character, and In a portable combined film reel and casalthough I have herein shown and described ing, the combination with a reel member in- 40 said flanged rim as formed of but two seccluding a hub and imperforate metallic tions, it is to be understood that it may be lates secured at the ends of the hub, means Y made of any suitable number of hinged or or attaching a-film lto the reel member, a iexibly connected sections. removable flanged rim formed of a plurality It will be seen that by making the end of connected sections fitting over and sur- 45 l could not be done were these plates formed and means Ifor loc plates or disks of the reel solid or imperrounding and fitting closely tothe peri heral forate, I am enabled to employ these as the portions of the plates, said plates and an ed side members of the protective casing, which rim forming a com lete closure for the fi m, Y

I enable the film to be attached to the hub, In testimony whereof, I affix my signareaching through' the end plates of the reel,
