Letters Patent No. 110.578` dated December 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT- IN FOLDING-LOUNGES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the Bane.
To all whom it may con-cern v Be it known that I, MICHAEL Mense, of Chicago, in the county of @ook and State of lIllinois, have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Lounges; and I do hereby vdeclare that .the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereo i', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which forni a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lounge or sofa, in such a manner that it can be as well used for a bed, cradle, and rocking-chair, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention apperta-ins to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in
' which- Figure 1 is a front view; and p Figure 2,. an end view otLLt-he lounge;
Figure 3 is an end view of it as a bedstead;
Figure 4 is an end viewl of it as a combined rocking-ohair and cradle;
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical section of iig. 4; and
Figure 6 is a side view of a spring bar which is used to coniine the rockers in their positions.
A represents the seat of the lounge resting upon four feet B 13,'whicl1 are provided with casters in the usual manner.
At one end of the scat A is the usual inclined headrcst O, which is provided with a cushioned frame, D, hinged at the inner edge of the head-rest, and of about the same size. y
This cushion is fastened by ahook, a., to the outer edge of the head-rest, as shown in iig.. 1.
Hinged to the upper rear edge of the seat A is the back E, which is cushioned in such amanner that when in a vertical position it will fit -over the inner edge ofthe cushion D.
At each end of the .back E is pivotedv an arm, G, which, at its lower or-outer-,end -is l provided with an inward-pointing pin, b. v v
l V'Ihis pin is inserted in a horizontal slot on a' box .or casting, H, which is secured to the end ofthe seat, A.
In this box or casting, below the slot, is a series ,y
of ratchet-teeth, e e, as shown in fig. 2, and upon the pin l) is pivoted a pawl, d, which eatehesjin the teeth c, and thusholds the back E in the desired position. j
It will readily be seen that by this means the back E may he placed and held firmly, either in a. vertical position or in as inclined a one as may be desired.
n the seat A to form a bed, the buttons fj' are turned to one side and the feet I I thrown down, forming 'the support'for the back.
The upper ends of said feet `then t in recesses made in the hack, and are held by the other end of the buttons f, being turned into a notch or groove on the feet, as `shown in fig. 3.
` The cushion D is then thrown over so as to form a' continuation of the head-rest C, extending across the end ofthe bed.
kOn the front side of? the seatA are hinged two boards, J and J', which, by hooks g, or other suitable means, may be connected so as to form one continuonshoard, extending from head to foot of the lounge.' i
The part J', at the foot, is of about such' length as the rooma person sitting at the foot ofthe lounge would occupy, while'the part J extends from the'in ner edgeof the former to the head of the lounge.
At each end of the bisected board J J", thus constructcd, is pivoted an arm, K, the rear end of which is curved, as shown, andt-he upper side provided with ratchet-tceth,`as shown in gs. 2,- 3, 4, and 5.
' These arms pass through downward-projecting extensions on the boxes pr castings H II, and in thev same are pivoted pawls h h,which catch in the teeth on the arms, land thus the whole board J J', orfeither part "thei'eoi', may-be raised at any angle desired,
forming a convenient support for the legs for invralids.A A This would be especially used when the back E isl thrown back at an angle.
' Underl each end of theseat A, inside of the feet B, B, is hinged abl'oelc L, provided with a rocker at its outer end, and so constructed or cu't out that when Vthrown down the feet B B will t within said block,
asparticnla'rly shown in fig. 4.;
- On the innerside of each rocker-block L, in suitable guides,is placed a' bar,- M, surrounded near its rear end by a spiral' spring,-v lc, which throws the bar forward.
` The front e d of the bar M is beveled, anden the s de of the he el it is provided with a hook, m, while on theopposite side, between saidy hookand the beveled front end, is another hook, fi, as shown vin fig. 6.
When the rocker-blocks are thrown out of the way -under the seat A, the hooks it' catch in loops or rings under said seat, holding the blocks up; and when'theyare throwndown so that the lounge rests'upon the rockers, the front ends of said hars and the hooks-m m catch in loops on thcinner sides of the'feet B B, thus holding vthe rocker-blocks firmly in position.
The partlJ of the hinged front board is now thrown up perpendicular-ly, and held by the hook a from the cushion-D; this part of the loungeA thus forming a cradle, while the foot'end forms .a rocking-chair, the part; J of thc front hoard being down.
If desired, both part-s of the front board mayhe thrown up perpendicular-ly.
I do not mean to confine myself in the use of these improvements to lounges alone, as they may equally as well be applied to sofas.
Having thus fully described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire t-o secure by Letters Patent, is-
l; The arms G G, provided with pawls l d, in conibination with rack or teeth e e, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The hinged boards J J', in combination with the lounge, when said boards are so arranged as to form,
` iirconnection with the lounge, either a chair or cradle,
or both together, snbstahtially as set forth.
3. rihe hinged hack E, provided with hinged feet I I, in combination with the pivoted arms G G, pins b b, pawls d. d, and teeth e ein the boxes or castings H l-I, all substantially as and for the purposes here in set forth.
4. lhe rocker-blocks L L, hinged on the underside of the seat A., inside of the feet B B, and provided with spring bars M M all constructed as described, substantially for the purposes herein set forth.
Inl testimony that I claim lthe foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
, MICHAEL MARSO.
