UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNA BROWN, OF VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON.
BED.
Application filed ma 1, 1914. Serial No. 835,705.
To all whbm it may concern Be it known that I, ANNA BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vancouver, in the county of Clarke and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds and more particularly to extension beds and to a means for supporting the extension.
In the type of device most commonly used at present the side extensions which are used for converting the cot or bed from a single to a double one have pivoted thereto diagonally extending braces which engage the framework of the bed to hold them in horizontal position. T hisstructure, however, does not prevent the overturning of the bed when any weight is applied adjacent the outer edge of the extension.
It is the object of this invention to avoid this difficulty and, broadly speaking, the device consists of suitable supporting mem bers or legs which may be folded beneath the side piece of the extension so as to be out of the way when the extension is folded alongside of the frame of the bed.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of novel locking means for holdingthe legs or supporting members in folded or extended position.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bed showing the supporting legs for the extension in operative position. Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the legs in folded position. F ig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line S 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the bed or couch proper consists of a frame 1 which carries the usual supporting springs or spring fabric 2 and is supported in the usual manner by the legs 3. Pivotally connected to the frame 1 are U-shaped extensions consisting of end and side bars 1 and 5, the latter being centrally apertured on its upper side, as shown at 6, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. As is usual, the spring fabric is connected to the Specification of Letters Patent.

side and end bars of the extensions and simply forms a continuation of that which is bridged across the bed or couch pro-per.
The frame and the extensions are, as usual, constructed of angle iron although this may be substituted by channel iron or I any other. material without departingfrom 1 tical portions of the side members 5 support ing legs 7 which are adapted to lie against the vertical portions of said side members and beneath the horizontal portions thereof so as to be wholly concealed when not in use. These legs are also adapted to extend at right angles to the side members so as to lie in a vertical plane and rest upon the floor and may, if desired, be supported with casters, as shown.
In order to operate the legs 7 soas to throw them from folded to extended position or vice versa there is journaled in the vertical portions of the side members 5 a shaft 8 having keyed upon its outer end an operating handle or button 9 and upon its inner end a. double lever 10 which is connected to the legs 7 by means of the links 11. This lever has its ends operating through the slot 6 and is locked in horizontal position with the legs folded or in extended position by means of a locking plate 12 which is pivoted to the horizontal portion of the side members and adapted to extend across and close the slot 6. Each of the links 11 have downwardly turned ends 13 which engage in diagonal slots 14 so as to compensate for the difference in radius of the links and that of the legs.
When the legs are in folded position and it is desired to throw them to operative position the locking plate is turned to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the operating handle or but-ton turned clockwise which gives the double lever 10 a similar movement. The links are thus moved in opposite directions, their downturned ends sliding in the slots until the end of said slots is reached, at which time the legs will be moved outwardly aswill be readily understood, until the lever has been reversed, at which time the legs will be in vertical position and held against movement irrespective of the position of the links in the slots. The locking plate is then thrown to operative position again across the slots which prevents movementof the double leverlO.
VVha-t is claimed is p 1. I a bed, an extension pivoted thereto, supporting legs for holding the extension in horizontal position, means for throwing the legs to operative or inoperative positions,
