To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, FRANK M. BROOKS, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the t borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
As is generally known, the so-called semiindirect artificial lighting eifects are in much demand at the present time. These lighting effects are obtained by suspending a transparent or translucent bowl and placing a suitable light within the same. In the use of electric lights, there is little or no dilliculty in producing this effect, as the necessary lead wires may be readily brought to a lamp socket or sockets fixed within the bowl, or within the frame supporting the same.
My present invention relates to a burner, and particularly to an inverted gas burner. I am aware that heretofore in- Verted gas burners have been applied to the end of a supply pipe in such a manner that they might be inserted within a suitable bowl to produce this semi-indirect lighting effect, but the object of my present invention is the provision of an inverted gas burner for such use and so constructed that in the fixture made in accordance with my invention the gas cock proper is removed or ofiset from the burner so as to be out of the immediate heat Zone directly above the same, and for thcrmore the construction of the fixture is such that the burner and cook, are contained within the bowl and the key of the gas cock provided with a stem of sufficient length to extend to a point beyond the rim of the bowl, so that it may be operated exteriorly thereof.
In carrying out my invention, I prefer to employ a gas cook fitted with a key, as is customary, and having offset portions, a suitable connection from one of these offset portions to the gas supply pipe, and by which the gas cock and burners are supported, elbows or l.-shaped nozzles connected to the other offset portion, and burner tubes for inverted burners attached to the elbows, all of which, together with the details of construction, will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial cross section illustrating my improved gas burner. Fig. 2 is a cross section on line w m, Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 1 are gas views similar to Fig. 1, illustrating modified forms of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, my improved gas burner preferably comprises a gas cock 10, fitted, as is customary, with a key 11, to which is suitably attached a stem 12. The key 11 is secured in position in the gas cock by means of a screw 15 and washer 16, as is customary, and is provided with a pin 13 adapted to abut against the shoulders 14,
formed in the body of the gas cook, to act as stops for limiting the revoluble movement of the key. 3 The body of the gas cook 10 is provided with ofi'set portions, indicated at 17 and 18 respectively. These are shown at right angles to each other, but as will be understood, may be placed in any required relationship to the body of the gas cock. iThe ofiset 17 is provided with a tapped opening in which one end of a nipple '19 is 'connected, the opposite end of which is secured in a similarly tapped opening in a :socket 20. The socket 20 is connected to the lower end of a supply pipe 21, which, as is customary, passes through a canopy 22, and from which, by chains 23 or otherwise, a frame 24; and bowl 25 may be suspended, the ,bowl 25 being maintained in position within the frame 24 by means of thumb screws 26, or otherwise. In this manner, as will be .apparent,the gas cook 10 is supported in an offset position from the supply pipe 21. Suitably secured in and extending in opposite directions fromthe ofl'set portion 18 of the gas cook are corresponding arms of elbows or L-shaped nozzles 27 and 28. Each of the other arms of these elbows is fitted with a burner tube 29, including needle gas regulating valves 30 and air regulating valves 31, and mantle supports or mouth pieces 32 adapted to receive inverted mantles 33, the burner tubes 29 being so shaped that the mantles 33 are placed approximately centrally of the bowl when in position.
The stem 12, attached to the key 11, is sufliciently long to extend beyond the rim of the frame and bowl, and. at its extremity may be provided with a cross arm 34:, at the ends of which are attached suitable pull chains 35 and 36, for operating the key to turn on or shut off the supply of gas. F urthermore, as is readily apparent, by reference to Fig. 1, the burner may be provided with a pilot light 37 connected by means of a tube 38 with the socket 20, and the supply of gas to the pilot light may be controlled by a screw control valve 39, the pilot light such an extent as to be removed from the heat zone directly above the lights, the eX- tent to which'the gas cook may be removed being limited by the diameter of the bowl, and determined by the length of the nipple 19. Itwill be further apparent that the gas cook and connections lie entirely within the diameter of the bowl while the end of the stem 12, with its cross arm 34 and pull chains 35 and 36-, lie exteriorly of the bowl, so as to provide for a ready operation of the gas cock.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that I i may dispense with the central depending supply pipe 21, which, in this instance, may terminate immediately below the canopy 22, where a socket 42 is connected to the same, the nipple 43 being connected at one end to the socket 42 and at its opposite end to a socket 41', the connecting and suspending pipe 40 being secured at one end in the socket 41 and at the opposite end in the offset portion 17 of the gas cock. In this construction, as will be apparent, the pipe may be set at the same or approximately the same inclination as the chains 23, by which the frame and bowl are supported, so as to make the fittings as inconspicuous as possible, the socket 41 and the ofl'set portion 17 of the gas cook being tapped, at suitable angles, to make this construction possible. Furthermore, by reference to Fig. 4, it will be seen that thering and bowl may be supported by a series of pipes or tubes 44, any one of which may also be employed as a gas supply tube for conveying the gas from the supply pipe to the gas cook, the other fea- ":1tures of this burner being precisely similar to those hereinbefore described in the other and preferred forms of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. 4. In a gas fixture, in combination with a bowl and means for supporting the'same, a gas cock fitted with a key, ofiset portions connected to the body of the said gas cook, a socket, a nipple secured at one end in the said socket and at the other end in one of the offset portions of the said gas cock for supporting the same and the parts attached thereto, elbow nozzles leading from the other offset portion, burner tubes attached to the said elbow nozzles, mantle supports fitted at the extremities of the said burner tubes, the said gas cook, elbow nozzles and burner tubes being located within the said bowl, and a stem secured'to and extending from the said key beyond the rim of the said bowl so that the keymay be operated exteriorly thereof.
