MFROVEMENT IN HAY-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ll E,04l3. dated June (i, 18:34.

Be it known that I, LEVI DEDERIOK, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Pressing Cotton, Hay, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makingapart of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the press, the front of the box or case nearest the eye beii1g removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the 1evers when depressed. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in each of the several figures.
The nature of my iuvention consists in a peculiar system or arrangement of levers by which, as will be fully shown hereinafter, an equal pressure is given the follower, or the follower is so operated upon that it will not cant,[or one end or part of it be out of avertical line with the other parts. The levers, also, by their arrangement,-have a progress ive power as they are operated, the follower at first moving quickly and gradually decreasing in speed, the power of course augmenting as the speed diminishes.
To enable others skilled in the,art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and the manner in which it operates.
A represents a box or case, at each end of which there is a follower, B, to each of which are attached two levers, C D. These levers are connected at their outer ends by rods E E, the rods being connected by pivots a a to the levers.
F G are levers, the Outer ends of which work on small shafts or pins b b in stationary posts H, two posts H being at each end-of the machine. The inner ends of these levers F G are attached by pivote c c to the levers C D, the outer end of the lever D working or vibrating between the fulcrum-levers F of the lever C.
I is -a pulley attached to each of the ends of the levers C, and J J are pulleys attached permanently to the bed Kone at each end of the machine. A cord or rope, L, is attached one to each end of the levers D, and these cords pass around the pulleys J and over the pulleys I, and thence downward around the fixed pul leys M M.
.By referring to Fig. l it will be seen that the two levers C D are connected by the rod E, and the cord or rope L by being attached to the outer end of the lever D, and passing around the pulley J and over the pulley I, at the outer end of the lever C, the two levers C D act simultaneously upon the follower B and with equal pressure. The cotton, hay, or other article to be pressed is placed in the box A, and, the ends of the cords L L being drawn outward, the outer ends of the levers C D are of course depressed, and the followers B B forced inward in the direction shown by the arrows, the article being pressedat the center of the box. The followers at first will move rather quickly, but will gradually diminish in speed, and this is required, for at first slight pressure is sufficient and speed is important; but the speed is lost or diminished toward the last of the operation, when greater power is required. When the levers are entirely clepressed, as seen in Fig. 2, the cotton or other article is taken from the box A, and the levers are raisedto their original position by turning a winch,N,one at each end of the machine. These winches have ropes d around them, which ropes are attached to the followers, and as the ropes are wound around the winches rollers O, which rest upon the ropes d, bear npward upon the lower levers, D, and consequently assist the elevation of the levers as the"followers are drawn back. Two arrangements of levers, as shown in Fig. 1-one at each end of the box Aare o'f course preferable; but one system of levers might be employed in certain cases. I wish it to be understood, therefore, that I do not confine myself to two systems of levers. By this invention an equal pressure is obtained upon the follower, for the lever C acts upon the upper part of the follower, and
the lever D acts upon the lower part. Oonse quently the follower will always be in a perpendicutar position. The tendency of the levers C D is also to'press the follower rather in an upward direction in starting, and the lower end of the follower does not bear or press upon the bottom of the box A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Traversing the fo11ower paralle1 by two sets of levers or toggle-j oints,with one lever of each set extended beyond the joint of connection, so as to form 2L18V81 to operate the joints when they are so arranged that the lever of the lower set or joint may work or vibrate between the fulcrum-levers of the upper one, the two le vers C and D being connected together by a rod or links, the whole being constructed and v operated substantiallyns described, 'for the purposes set forth.
