ROPE 0R CABLE LUBRICA'IOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 7, 1914.
Application filed March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822,486.
7 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonon D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bicknell, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rope or Cable Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rope or cable lubricator, and particularly to a device for oiling or lubricating hoisting ropes or cables, such as are used in connection with hoisting apparatus at coal mines, etc, and which in use are subjected to considerable friction, wear and tear.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient, reliable and efficient device for the purpose stated, which may be readily applied to the rope or cable for the purpose of lubricating the same and as readily removed therefrom after the rope or cable has been lubricated to the desired degree.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which c Figure 1 isa view of a rope or cable lubricator embodying my invention. Fig.9 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the closure slide.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a vessel or reservoir 1, preferably of conical form, and provided at its top with diametrically disposed handles 2 by which it may be conveniently transported and hung up when not in use. The body of the vessel is provided with fastening straps 3 adapted for engagement with buckles 4, which straps are designed for securing the device to a suitable support when in use to lubricate a rope or cable.
The lower contracted end of the conical vessel is open for the passage of the rope or cable 5, and extending longitudinally at one side of the vessel, between its upper and lower edges is a slot 6, designed to permit the device to be applied to and removed from the cable by a relative lateral movement, in which the cable passes into and out of the vessel through the slot 6. lVithin the vessel is a body of suitable absorbent material 7, such as Waste, saturated with the oil or lubricant which is to be applied to the rope or cable.
The Walls of the slots 6 are bent to form guide ways 8 to receive a sliding closure member 9, the edges of which slidably engage the said guide ways. This closure member 9 is provided at its upper end with a suitable manipulating handle 10, and said closure member is designed and adapted in practice to be removed to permit of the entrance of the'rope or cable through the slot 6 when the device is applied for use, and then to be inserted in place to close the slot and hold the vessel and cable against relative displacement. It will be understood, of course, that the rope or cable when applied may be lubricated by either moving the device along the rope or cable or moving the cable through the device, and conveniently the device may be employed by supporting it in a sationary position and allowing the cable to run therethrough while it is in working action. By the provision of the slot 6 it will be evident that the lubricator may be quickly and conveniently applied and detached, and that the closure member 9 will hold the cable from displacement while the lubricator is in working position thereon. By means of the present invention the operation of lubricating a rope or cable which is subjected to friction, wear and tear may be readily and conveniently performed at intervals, the lubrication of the cable increasing its period of usefulness by reduction of friction and wear, as will be readily understood.
I claim 1. A rope or cable lubricator comprising a conical vessel provided with lubricating means therein, said vessel having at one side a longitudinally extending slot, whereby it is adapted to be applied by relative lateral motion to and from the cable, a member for slidable engagement with the vessel adapted to close said slot. and means for holding the vessel contracted to dispose the. walls of the slot for engagement with said closure member, said means-being adapted for securing the vessel to a suitable support.
2. --A rope or cable lubricator comprising a conical vessel containinglubricating means and formed of a single piece of resilient ma terial, said vessel being provided at one side thereof with a longitudinal slot and guideways at opposite sides thereof, a closure plate engageable with said guideways, and with said guide ways and extending the means for holding the vessel contracted and length thereof to close said slot and means securing the same to'a support. for. securing the container to a support.
3. A device for lubricating ropes orcables In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 5 comprising a conical vessel provided with in presence of two witnesses.
lubricating means therein, said vessel being formed in one of its sides with a longitudi- GEORGE SMITH nally extending slot, said slot having rigid Witnesses: walls bent to form guide ways, a closure Lnwrs PHILLIPPE,
