To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTERS. LANG, of Sewickley, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combination Broom Press and Nailer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred form of machine embodying my invent-ion; Fig. 1 is a side view showing a broom formed and nailed by my improved machine; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view on a larger scale of the nail sorter and feeder; Fig. 4 is a section on the line IVTV of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section showing portions of the machine; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the stationary anvil; Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the lower movable anvil; Fig. 8 is a plan view, and Fig. 9 a vertical section of a portion of the nail trough; and Figs. 10 and 11 are perspective views of cam lugs hereinafter more fully described.
My invention has relation to broom-making machinery, and more particularly to a combined machine for pressing the brooms with the hoods and bands therefor into final shape and for nailing the hoods and bands to the brooms.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine of this character which will be simple and effective in its operation, and which will enable the work to be done rapidly and accurately and at a relatively low cost.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof, and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the frame of the machine, which may beof any suitable character; 3 designates the main driving shaft, which is mounted in suitable bearings 4; at the upper portion of the frame, and which may be driven in any suitable way as by a belt-pulley 5. The
shaft 3 carries a pinion 6, which meshes with Specification of Letters Patent.

a spur gear wheel 7 on a shaft 8. The I wheel 7 is loosely mounted on the shaft 8, and has a clutch hub 9, which is adapted for engagement with an endwise movable clutch member 10.
11 is a spring having a tendency to force the clutch member 10 into engagement with the clutch hub 9. The clutch member 10 has an annular groove therein, formed with a cam wall 12.
13 is a jclutch releasing rod, having a handle portion 14. This rod is arranged to be projected by a spring 15 into engagement with the groove of the clutch member.
Mounted on the shaft 8 is an eccentric 16, tothe strap 17 of which is connected an adjustable plunger or pitman 18, whose lower end is pivoted at 19 within a tapered recess 20 of a hammer or driving block 21. This hammer or drive block is arranged to reciprocate vertically in the guides 22. The hammer or drive block carries a plurality of drivers 23.
24: is a fixed anvil, which is secured in the frame below the hammer or drive block, and which is formed with a plurality of vertical perforations 25 to permit the drivers 23 to pass therethrough.
26 is the lower movable anvil or press head, which is mounted on the reciprocating head 27 This head is arranged to move vertically in the guides 28. It is actuated by the toggle members 29 and 30, the member 29 being pivoted at 31 at its upper end within a tapering recess 32 of the head; the two members being pivotally connected at 33, and the lower member being connected to a rock shaft 34: mounted in the lower portion of the machine, and also having secured thereto a foot lever or treadle 35.
36 is a stop for the foot lever or treadle.
The two anvilsor press blocks 24; and 26 are each formed with a cavity 37 in its working face, these cavities being of the proper form to shape and compress the broom when it is placed therein, as will be clearly seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 5.
My invention also provides mechanism for automatically feeding the nails to the driver in position to be driven, and this part of my invention will now be described.
38 is a nail hopper or receptacle, which is pivotally supported in bearings 39 carried by rearwardly projecting arms 40 at the upper portion of the frame. When the nail hopper or receptacle is tipped to a position in which its bottom is inclined downwardly and forwardly, the nails which are suspended in the slots will slide down these slots, and the foremost nail in each slot will pass into the adjacent short slot 47: in the bar 46, and will be retained in this position until said bar is moved endwise to bring the nails opposite the slots or re-' These slots or recesses 45 are sufficiently large to permit the heads of the; nails to drop therethrough. This slide 51 is mounted ister with the openings 53, but are arranged to be brought into register with said openings, with which they correspond in number and disposition. The plate 54 is normally held in the non-registering position shown in Fig. 5, by the action of a spring 56. When the slide 51 is moved forwardly underneath the driver 23, the front edge of the plate 54 will contact with the stop wall .57, and will be moved backwardly against the action of the spring 56 to thereby bring its openings 55 into register with the openings .58. i
For the purpose of automatically operating the nail assorter and distributer 38, it
has anup-wardly projecting arm 58, which is connected by a link 59 with the arm 60 of a bell crank lever 61, which is sleeved on the shaft 8, and which has its other arm 62 connected by a link 63 with the eccentric strap 17. The connections are such that at the proper time the receptacle 88 will be 46 is an endwise movable bar, which abuts 1 against the front .edge of the bottom .porj tion of the hopper or receptacle in the manj tilted from the position shown in Fig. 1 into a position in which its bottom is inclined downwardly and forwardly so that it will deliver one set of nails. It is then moved back to the position shown in Fig. 1. The slide '51 may be operated in various ways. It is shown as having a depending arm 64, to which is connected a link 65. This link is in turn connected to a sleeve mounted on the-shaft 71 having a counterweighted arm 72. The sleeve 70 has another arm 73, which is connected by link 74 with hand lever 75 pivoted to the frame at 76.
The operation is as follows :The broom with the hood and band thereon are placed between the anvils or press blocks '24 and 26, the lower anvil or press block being at this time in its down position, as shown in Fig. 5. The operator then places his foot on the foot lever or treadle 35, and forces the anvil or press block 26 upwardly, thereby pressing .and giving the final shape to pressingaction may be obtained. The operator then pulls the clutch shifter 13, which enables the spring 11 to throw the clutch.

A set of nails has previously been delivered in the man-' ner described to the slide 51, and this is moved forwardly underneath the drivers 23 by a movement of the lever '7 5. The throwing of the clutch as above described starts the machine in motion, and the drivers descend and driveall the nails simultaneously. As soon as the operator releases the clutchshifting rod '14, it is immediately returned into engagement with the groove of the clutch member, :and the cam wall 12 thereof engages said rod to thereby automatically disengage the clutch as soon as the gear wheel 8 has made one complete revolution. The movement of the eccentric has in the meanwhile actuated the described connection to tilt the nail receptacle 38, so that another set of nails will have been delivered to the nail tubes in the manner before described.
In order to effect the endwise reciprocation of the bar t6, I provide the frame with the cam lugs 77 (see Figs. 1, 3, l0 and 11) at opposite ends of the said bar, one of these lugs having the cam surface 78, and the other the cam surface 79. As the hopper is tilted downwardly and forwardly, carrying with it the bar 46, one end of this bar will be engaged with the cam surface 78, thereby moving the bar endwise to nail-releasing position. Upon the reverse tilting movement of the hopper, the cam surface 79 will engage the opposite end of the bar 46 to move it to its original position. It will be understood that the counterweight 72 will act to automatically return the nail carrier 51 to its receiving position as soon as the lever 75 is released.
In Fig. l I have shown one of the completed brooms as finished by my machine. The cap A and the band a are shown as formed fro-m a single piece of metal, with the integral connection I). The end or press heads press this cap and band securely in place upon the broom, and the cap and band are nailed simultaneously. The nails which secure the handle in the broom are also driven simultaneously with the other nails. The driving head 21, the top anvil press plate 24;, and the nail carrier slide 51 are made removable so that diiferent parts may be used interchangeably for making different sizes of brooms.
My invention provides a simple and eflicient machine by which the operations of pressing and nailing brooms may be rapidly, accuratedy and economically performed.
It will be understood that the machine as herein shown and described may be changed in various ways. Thus, the driving gearing, the clutch, the various actuating connections, the details of the nail-assorting and feeding devices may be widely changed, and various other changes maybe made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim In a machine for forming and nailing brooms, the combination of a pair of shaping heads having their opposing faces formed to simultaneously and completely shape both laterally and vertically a broom and also a metal cap or band applied thereto, the upper of said heads being fixed and the lower one being movable, and the upper having a series of vertical nail apertures therethrough, a nail driver head mounted for vertical reciprocation above the upper head and having a plurality of driving members in line with said apertures, said driver head being fixed against movement except in a vertical direction, and a nail carrier mounted to reciprocate into and out of a position between the upper head and the nail driver head, and having a plurality of nail seats arranged to be brought into register with the driving members and the said apertures, together with actuating gear and connections for the nail driver head and the nail carrier; substantially as described.
