Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 28, 1913. Serial No. 797,823.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prestonsburg, in the county of Floyd and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to churns and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the inventionis to provide a churn mechanism consisting of a plurality of dashers mounted for reciprocatory movement simultaneously in opposite directions. The said dashers are guided by staves which pass through a top or cover for the churn body. A standard is mounted upon the said body and supports the mechanism for reciprocating th dashers and staves above indicated. A rod depends from the said top or cover and carries an adjustable guide through which the said staves pass. A butter gathering device is connected with the lower end of the rod and is adapted to rest upon the bottom of the body during the churning operation.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of the churn. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper por tion of the mechanism. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the dashers with its staff in section.
The churn comprises a body 1 which is of usual cylindrical configuration. A cover 2 is provided for closing the upper end of the body 1 and a standard 8 is mounted upon the center of said cover. Strips of metal 4 extend radially from the standard 3 and have ends which project beyond the periphery of the cover 2 and the projecting end portions of the said strips are provided with set screws 5 adapted to bear against the sides of the body 1. Therefore it will be seen that the cover 2 may be detachably held in place upon the upper edge of the body 1.
The standard 3 is provided at its upper end with a handle 11. A shaft 12 is journaled in the upper portion of the said standard. A crank handle 13 is fixed to the shaft 12 and a gear wheel 14 is also fixed to the said shaft. A shaft 15 is journaled in the stand- Md 3 and carries a relatively small gear wheel 16 which meshes with the gear wheel 14 hereinbefore mentioned. Cranks 17 are fixed to the shafts 15 and links 18 are pivotally connected with the said cranks. Staves 19 pass transversely through th cover 2 and are pivotally connected with the links 18. The cranks 17 at the opposite ends of the shaft 15 are disposed in opposite directions and consequently when the shaft 15 is rotated the links 17 and staves 19 move simultaneously in opposite directions. Dashers 20 are carried at the lower ends of the staves 19. A rod 21 depends from the center of the cover 2 and an arm 22 is adjustably mounted upon the intermediate portion of the said rod. The said staves 19 are guided through the arm 22. A chain section 23 is connected with the lower end of the rod 21 and a perforated pan 24' is con-' nected at its opposite side portions with the ends of the said chain. The pan 24 is adapted to rest at or near the bottom of the body 1 during the churning operation and at the end of the churning operation when the cover 2 is removed from over the body 1 the pan 24 moves vertically along the body 1 and gathers the butter from the cream and collects the same so that when the. pan is lifted from the body it will contain approximately all of the butter. At the same time the milk in liquid form will remain in the body as it may drain from the butter through the openings in the pan 24. The pan 24 is provided at its edge with a flange 25 of rubber or other similar material which has contact with the inner surface of the body 1 and which sweeps along the said surface when the pan is removed from the body and directs the butter into the pan.
Guides 26 are mounted at the opposite sides of the standard 3 and hold blocks 27 which are slidably mounted therein.
