To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. GODLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamps intended for use in the open exposed to wind and rain, and its object is to provide a lamp wherein the proper ventilation shall be secured and the effect of sudden gusts of air overcome; and to provide a construction in which the parts may be easily assembled, and so sei curely clamped together that rattling shall be overcome.
This invention consists in the details of construction shown, described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My improved construction is shown as embodied in a lamp comprising a font 1, a body 2, havin a closed rear end 3 and a Haring front end 4, which may be closed by a lens door 5, that supports the lens G in the usual manner. An opening is formed in the upper side of the body to receive a head that comprises a lower section 8, having its lower end turned inwardly to form an annular bearing shoulder; 9 Whose inner edge may be turneddownwardly to forni the cylindrical extension 10 that passes through the opening in the body and centers the head in respect thereto. The lower section of the head is also provided with a series of draft openings 11, and has a flaring upper end 1Q, the edge of which may be turned inwardly to form a bead 13 that may be -received by the similarly beaded lower end 15 of the upper section 16 of the head. The upper portion of the section 16 'may be constricted to form-an edge 17 from which the top 18, having a small central aperture, may be supported, b a series of-posts 19 `(Flg. 3)
provided wit the channels 20'in their inner l surfaces, the posts being spaced apart somewhat to form a series of passages21, fonthe burnt gases and hot air. A handle 22 may be attached to the head in any desired 'manner.
Passing longitudinally through the opening in the top of the body is a chimney tube having a cylindrical body portion 25 and a Haring lower end 26, whose outer edge is turned upwardly at 27 to receive and support a curtain 28 which, as show`n,`is of the shape ofthe frustum of a cone, and vwhich may have at its upper end the inturned an- `nular ange 29 that bears upon the body 2.

"The chimney tube is spaced somewhat from the cylindrical extension 10 to form an annular passage through which air entering the openings 11 may pass downwardly into the space inclosed by the curtain 28, and through the perforations 3() into the body of the lanip. The upper end of the chimney tube may extend above the edge 17 and have a closed end 37 that is supported from the body of the tube by a series et posts 38 having ribs 3Q thereon corresponc.- ing to and are received by the channels Q0 in the posts 19 of the head, whereby rel ative angular movement of the chimney tube and the head is prevented. Between 'the posts 38 are a series of openings 36, corre spending to the openings between the posts 19. These openings are preferably toi-ined by bending the reinforcing flanges ,40 inn wardly. The end 37 preferably has a central aperture corresponding to the aperture in the cover 18 of the. head, and may have soldered or otherwise, vsecured to its lower surface a threaded nut 41.
Fitting upon the upper surface ot'.A the head 1S is a cap that may be formed of aY lower section 43 having a beaded edge @i that is received by the beaded edge 4.5 of an upper section 46. The lowersecticn of the cap may be perforated in alinement With'tzhe perforations in the parts 37 and 18, and through these perforations the threadedbolt 47 may pass, said bolt preferably having a head 48 that may be soldered to the lower section of the cap.
The parts are assembled by opening the lens door and inserting the chimney tube and curtain from below. The head is then positioned from above, after which the bolt 47 is inserted and the posts rigidly secured together by turning the cap to screw the l,bolt 47 into the nut 4l. While the chimneyetube, cap and curtain areshown applied to a substantially globular lamp body havinga Haring front, it is clearn that these improvements may be applied to lamp bodies of widely different forms.. V`Part of the air entering through the openings 11 passes downwardly into the space between the curtain and the chim'neytube and part of it passes upwardly into the space between the tube and the head. The downward current is intercepted by the'curtain through the small perforations of which it passes rather slowly and regularly by which the effect of sudden drafts is largely overcome. The air is then received in the body of the lamp, from which it passes upwardly into the chimney tube and outthrough the openings between the posts 38. The upward current of air in the head passes into the chimney tube through the openings 33 and on.
wardly through the open-ings 36 with the air coming up through the tube, the tongues 34 serving to direct the air in its course and to prevent back draft down the chimney tube.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the details of my construction witholut departing from the spirit of my inven- `tron. I do not therefore, wish to be limited otherwise than as indicated by the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1 l. In a lamp, a sheet metal body having an iihopenlingtlierein, a sheet 'metal head the lower end 'of which forms a tight connection with the edge of said opening in the lamp body, saidnead con'iprising a top between which and the remainder of the head a series of openings are formed, a chimney tube within the head of less cross-sectional area than that of the lower portion of the head and' having a closed upper end and openings just below its upper' end to register with the openings in the head, the openings in the chimney tube being at the same level as the openings in the head, and means for securing the upper end of the chimney tube to the top of the head.
2. In a lamp, ajbody having an opening, a hollow head connecting to the edge of the opening in the lamp body, a top for the head below which the head is pioyidedwith a series oi peripheral openings, saidtpp provided with a central opening, a chimney tube within the head of less cross-sectional area than that of the lower portion of the head and having openings at its upper end to register with the openings in the head, said chimney tube having a flaring lower end and a closed upper end provided with a cen tral threaded opening, and a bolt extending through' the opening in the top and chimney tube for securing the parts together.
3. In a lamp, a body having anopening therein, a tubular head the lower end of which forms a tight connection with the edge of said opening in the lamp body, said head having a series of perforations and having a constricted upper portion and also comprising a top between which and the remainder of the head a series of openings are formed, said top having a central jopening, a chimney tube within-the head of less crosssectional area than that of the lower portion of the head and having openings at its upper end to register with the openings in they head, and having a closed upper` end provided with an opening, and means for secur-V ing the parts rigidly together, consistin I'of'.

4. In a lamp, a body having an opening, a hollow head, the lower end of which forms atight connection with the edge of the opening inthe lamp body, said headhaving a series of peripheral openings in its lower portion and having a constricted upper portion, a top .for the head below which the head is provided with a series of peripheral openings, a chimney tube within the head of less cross-sectional area than that of the lower portion of the head'and having openings at its upper end to `registerwith the openings in the head, and also having a series of openings formed therein below the constricted upper portion of the head, said chimney tube having a flaring lower end, a curtain inclosing the chimney and forming a' connection between the lower end of the head y and the chimney tube, said curtain havinga series of small openings formed therein,.
and a bolt extending through the top and upper end of thc chimney tube for ,securing the parts rigidly together.
5. In a lamp, a body having an opening therein, a tubular head, the lower portion of which is provided with an annular shoulder and a cylindrical extension, the shoulder bearing upon the upper surface offth'c body and the extension being received within the opening in thebody, said head having a series of perforations in its lower portion and having a constricted upper portion and also having a series of openings formed therein above the constricted upper portion, a chimney tubewithin the head oitlessv cross-sectional area than that of the lower portion of the head and having openings at its upper end that register with the openings in the head, a curtain inclosing the chimney and having a shoulder that bears upon the inner surface of the body, said curtain forming a connection between the body and the chimf ney tube and having a series of small openings therein, and means for securing the parts rigidly together.
6. In a lamp, a body having an opening therein, a tubular head the lower portion o' which is provided with a shoulder that bears ,upon the upper surface of the body, said head having a series o' perforations therein and havin a constructed upper portion, said head also aving a series of openings therein above the -constrcted portion and a top above the openings having a central aperture, a chimne tube within the head of lesser cross-sectional area than that ot' the lower portion of the head and having openings at its upper end to re ister with the openings in the head, said chimney tube also having a series of openings therein below the restricted portion of the head and a closed upper end having a central aperture, a cur- .f
tain inclosing the chimney and havin a shoulder that bears upon the inner sur ace of the body, said curtain forming a connection between the edge of the opening in the body and the chimney tube and having a series of small openings therein, and a bolt extending through the apertures in the top and end of the chimney tube for securing the parts rigidly together.

In a lamp, a body having an opening therein, a tubular head the lower portion oi' which is provided with an annular shoulder and a cylindrical extension, the shoulder bearing upon the upper surface of the body and the extension being received within the opening in the body, said head having a series of perforations in its lower portion and having a constricted upper portion and also having a series of openings formed therein above the constricted upper portion,

In a lamp, a body havingan opening latherein, a tubular head, the lower end of v,.'vvhieh forms a tight connection with the edge of said opening 1n the lamp body, said head having a series of perforations and having a constricted upper portion and also comprisin a top between which and the remainder o the head a series of openings are formed, a chimney tube within the head of less cross-sectional area than that of the lower portion of the head and having openings at its upper end to register with the openings in thel head, means to prevent angular rotation ot the head and chimney tube in respect to each other, a curtain inclosing the chimney tube and forming a connection between the lower end of the head and the chimney tube, said curtain having a series of small openings therein, and means for securing the parts ri idly together.
9. ln a lamp, a ody havin' an opening therein, a tubular head, the ower end of which forms a tight connection with the edge of said opening in the lamp body, said head having a series of perforations and having a constricted upper portion and also com pri'sing a top between which and the remainder of the head a series of openings are formed, a chimney tube within the head of less cross-sectional area than that of the lower portion of the head and having 'openings at its upper end to register with the openings in the head and also having a series of openings therein below the constricted portion of the head, means to pre vent angular rotation of the head and chimney tube in respect to each other, a curtain inclosing the chimney tube and forming a connection between the lower end of the head and the chimney tube, said curtain having a series of small openings therein, and means for securing the parts rigidly together.
10. In a lamp, a body having an opening therein, a tubular head, the lower end of which forms a tight connectin with the edge of said opening inthe lamp, said head having a, series of perfor-ations and having a constricted upper portion and also comprising a top between which and the remainder of the head a series of openings are formed, said top having a central longitudinal perforation therein, a chimney tube within the head ot' lesser cross-sectional area than that of the lower portion of the head and having a closed upper end, provided with a perforation therein in alinement with the perforation in the cover portion of the head, said chimney tube having openings therein below the top to register with the openings in the upper end of the head, a curtain bearing against the chimney tube and forming a connection between the lower end of the head, the lanip body and the chimney tube, said curtain having a series of small perforations therein, -a threaded bolt passing through the alined perforations in the cover portion of the head and the cover portion of the chimney tube, and a nut on the bolt whereby the parts may be clalnped rigidly together.
