SPARK-ARRESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

My invention has for a primary object toV provide a construction of the above type which will serve in an eficient manner in arresting or preventing the escape of sparks or live cinders from the stack or other con duit without undue interference with the draft or exhaust operations of the locomotive or other engine in conjunction with which the device may be employed.
A further objectresides in the provision of mechanism for regulating the draft.
Other objects will be set forth as my de scription progresses and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which I desire protection, succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure 1 is a vertical section of a spark arrester embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a modiiication thereof.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 indicates a casing having a top wall 2 provided with a centrally disposed outlet opening 2.. Surrounding opening 2 is a cylindrical wall or ange 3 depen ing from wall 2 and spaced inwardly in concentric relation to the upper cylindrical portion 1 of the casing side wall to provide what I term a steam chamber 4 int-0 which the unconsumed products of combustion and exhaust steam escaping from the stack or spark conduit, as 5, are directed in a manner hereinafter to be described.
The cylindrical side wall portion l eX- tends below wall or flange 3 and connects with a substantially frusto-conical wall section 1 whose reduced lower end portion is of greater diameter than stack 5l and provided with a cylindrical terminal portion 1a which extends about and forms in conjunction with the stack an outlet 6 serving to relieve stack 5 from back pressure resulting from the products striking the wall 2 within chamber 4. This is an important feature of my invent-ion, as in practice I have found that through the provision of said out-let 6 `I can employ chamber 4 without impairing or retarding the draft or natural flow or delivery of the products from the stack.
Outlet 6 must obviously not be so large as to interfere wit-h the circulation through outlet 2', and to obtain a nicet-y of balance in size between the outlets 2 and 6 that the desired condition can be maintained under varying atmospheric or other conditions, I 1provide what I term la deiiector for out- In the construction shown in Fig.V 3, the deector, as 7, comprises an annular plate carried by a sleeve 8, slidably mounted on stack 5 for adjustment toward and from outlet 6 and pro-vided with a set-screw 9, whereby the deflector can be securely held in its adjusted position.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 `I have shown a delector 7 as constituting the bottom wall of a chamber 10 which latter extends upwardly about casing 1 in spaced relationthereto to provide an uptake passage for delivery of the quenched products in an upward direction, as may be desired when the device is applied to the stack of a locomotive. i. Detlector 7 is fixed to a sleeve 8 slidably engaged with stack 5 and adjustably held in posit-ion by threaded stems 11 which engage in apertured lugs 12 of casing 1 and are provided with nuts 13, as shown.
Reference numeral 14 indicates a conical deiector having upper and lower stem extensions 15 and 16, the latter of which is guided for vertical movement in a spider 17 in stack 5 and the former having its upper end port-ion guided in a spider 21 in wall 3 and adjustably connected by nuts 18, as shown, with a lever 19, fulcrumed at 2O on casing 1.
The upper portion of deflector or valve 14 is of greater diameter than wall 3, which in turn is vof greater diameter than stack 5, and through'the provision of lever 19, said deflector 14 can be adjusted upwardly to close outlet 2, as when a decreased draft is desired.
Lever 19 can be operated in any desired manner. For the purpose of illustration, I have shown the same provided with a cord 22 which can lead to any desired point for convenient operation.
Reference numeral 23 indicates spacer arms by which casing 1 is supported on stack 5.
In operation, deflector 14 serves to direct the vproducts of combustion and exhaust steam discharged from stack 5 upwardly into chamber 4. The steam collects in this chamber and quenches the sparks and live cinders, and the heavier products through their inipact with wall 2 are forcibly thrown downwardly through outlet 6. BetweenV the exhaust operations the lighter products will pass through outlet 2.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
1. A -spark arrester comprising a casing adapted to be mounted on a stack, said casing being open at its lower end to normally provide an outlet opening at the outer side of the stack and provided in its upper p0rtion with an outlet opening, outwardly projecting lugs on said casing, valve means for the outlet opening in the upper portion of the casing, a verticallyadjustable deflector normally extending across the outlet opening inthe lower end of said casing in outwardly spaced relation thereto, and a vertically disposed wall on said defiector extending upwardly about said casing and spaced therefrom, said wall being adj ustably secured to said lugs.
2. A spark arrester comprising a casing of inverted frusto-conical formation, aspark conduit normally projecting into the lower lend of said casing, said casing having its lower end o-pen about said spark conduit to provide an outlet opening and provided in its top wall with an outlet opening, a wall depending from the top wall of said casing about the opening thereof and Yspaced inwardly' from the side wall of said casing, valve means for the outlet opening in the top wall of said casing, a vertically adjustable deflector extending across the outlet Vopening in the lower port-ion of said casing in outwardly spaced relation thereto, and aV vertically disposed wall on said deflector extending upwardly about said casing and spaced therefrom.
3. A spark arrester comprising a casing of inverted frusto-conical formation, a spark conduit normally projecting into the lower end of said casing, said casing having its lower end open about said spark conduit to Copies of this patentV may be obtained for provide an outlet opening and provided in its top wall with an outlet opening, a wall depending from the top wall of said casing about the opening thereof and spaced inwardly from the side wall of said casing, valve means for the outlet opening in the top wall of said casing, and a deiector mounted on said spark conduit for vertical adjustment and extending across the outlet opening in the lower portion of said casing in outwardly spaced relation thereto.
4. A spark arrester comprising a casing of inverted frusto-conical formation, a spark conduit normally projecting into the lower end of said casing, said casing having its lower end open about said spark conduit to provide an outlet opening and provided in its top wall with an outlet opening, a wall depending from the top wall of said casing about the opening thereof and spaced inwardly from the side wall of said casing, upwardly flaring means in said 'casing interposed between said spark conduit and said depending wall for directing the smoke from the former into the upper portion of the casing at the outer side of said depending wall, and a deflector extending about said spark conduit across and in outwardly spaced relation to the outlet opening in the lower portion of said casing and adjustable toward and from the same.
5. A spark arrester comprising a casing of inverted frusto -conical formation, a spark conduit normally projecting into the lower end of said casing, said casing having its lower end open about said spark conduit to provide an outlet opening and provided in its top wall with an outlet opening, a wall depending from the top wall of said casing about the opening thereof and spaced inwardly from the side wall of said casing, valve means for the outlet opening in the top wall of said casing, a vertically adjustable deflector normally extending across the open lower end of said casing in outwardly spaced relation thereto, and a vertically disposed wall on said defiector of inverted frusto-conical formation extending upwardly about the similarly formed portion of said casing and spaced therefrom.
