SHOCK-ABSORBER FOR AUTOMOBILES. Y
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1916.
Application led March 30, 1916. Serial No. 87,791.
T all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT BETTINARDI, a citizen of Italy, residing at West H0- boken, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shock-Absorbers for Automobiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in shock absorbers and particularly to shock absorbers for use on automobiles.
The particular object of the invention is to provide a novel and efficient device of this character, especially adapted for use with automobiles having underslung frames.
Another object is to improve the construction of devices of this character to more eectively take up or ease the rebound.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rear portionof an automobile frame and springs showing my shock absorber applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the device taken on a line at right angles to Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a portion of the chassis at the rear end of the automobile, 11 the upper spring and 11 the upwardly extending shackle to which is connected the forward end of the spring 12. Disposed on the upper side ofthe spring 12 and secured thereto by means of the clips 13 is a base plate 14, and extending upwardly from the base plate are four angle posts 15. Disposed to slide vertically with its corners engaging in the angles of the posts 15 is a block 16 through which extends the axle 17 of the automobile. This bloks'll tWQ sections, each having the oppositely extending ears 18 for the reception of the clamping bolts 19. Disposed on the upper ends of the posts is a cap plate 20, the same being secured to the post by the removable bolts 21. The lower face of the cap plate is formed with a downwardly extending boss or lug 22 and the upper face of the upper section of the block 16 with a similar but upwardly extending lug 23 for reception in the opposite ends of a coil spring 24 disposed between the block and the cap plate. Between the lower section of the block and the base plate 14 is a shorter coil spring 25, the upper portion of which encircles the downwardly extending lug 26 carried by the `lower section of the block and having its lower end engaged and held by a washer 27 disposed on the upper end of a bolt 28 which is passed through the base plate and the spring 12.
From the foregoing it will be seen that downward movement of the chassis will draw down the ends of the spring 12, and at the same time pull downwardly on the base plate 14 and the attached posts 15 so that the upper spring 24 will be compressed, and the lower spring 25 permitted to expand. Then on the rebound, the shock will be evenly distributed between the springs 24 and 25 so that there will be no tendency for a continual bouncing, nor a sudden bump when a depression or elevation is struck by the wheel.
What is claimed is:
The combination with the spring of an automobile, of a plate disposed on the upper face thereof, said plate having end apertures for the reception of clips and a central aperture for the reception of a bolt passed through vthe spring, vertical guides carried by the plate and angular in cross section, an angular axle box slidable vertically between the guides and with its corners disposed for vertical sliding movement i 'the plat@ and. enrdns the bolt aperture.
a cap plate disposed on the upper ends of cap plate and held under tension by the the guides and having depending flanges on latter. A
the opposite ends bearing against the guides, In testimony whereof, I aiiX my signaand reta1n1ng screws carried by the said ture, 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
5 flanges and arranged to bite into the upper ROBERT BETTINARDI.
ends of said guides to detaohably hold the Witnesses: cap plate in proper position, and a coil ANTON BETTINARDI, spring disposed between the box and the WVM. M. SCHULTZ- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
