SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 26,
Appliation mea June 22, 1915. serial No. 35,723.
TQ all/whom t may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. MoNIoHoL, a subject of the King of 'Great Britain, residing at Yorkton, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and usefulA Improvements in Safety-Razors, specification.
The invention relates to safety razors, and more particularly to the class of automatic safety razors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor wherein the blade thereof is in strip form andadapted to automatically move across .the working face of the holder so as to effect an angular cutting action when the razor is drawn over the face for shaving purposes.
Another obj ect of the invention is the proof which the following is a vision of a razor of this character wherein the strip is made flexible and endless so that it will be guided over a pair of rollers to present a continuous cutting edge lmovable under the action of a spring for effecting the angular cutting operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a razor of this character which is novel in form to assure a positive operation and a fresh cutting edge during the continued use thereof.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a razor of this character v which is simple in construction, reliable and eflcient in operation, and inexpensive inl manufacture.
With these and other objects in view,/\the invention consists inthe construction, com-` bination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a razor constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof with-the housing broken away. v
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 -3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a views in the drawing.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several sectional view on the winding of a coiled main spring 7 which is lnclosed within a case 8 rotatably journaled wlthin the housing 6, the spring being fixed to the stem or handle 5 and the casing 8, respectively. Formed on the casing 8 lat its periphery are, gear teeth 9 which serve as the main driving element, and meshes with a gear 10 which also meshes with a driven gear 11 fixed to one of a pair of axles 12 journaled in spaced parallel relation to each other 1n opposite cheeks of the housing 6. The gear 10 meshes with the pinion 12 which 1s connected with a suitable speed regulator 13 for controlling the 'actionfof the spring when the razor is in use. Fixed to the axles 12 are guide pulleys 14 over which is trained an. endless flexible cutting blade 15, the same being acted upon by means of a tightener 16 of any approved form, which-.serves to hold the blade taut. blade 15 travels without the working face 17 which carries a guard portion 18 of any ordinary form adapted to shield a thin blade in cutting position. V The lhandle 5 is provided with a suitable ratchet wheel 19with which engages a ratchet pawl 20 pivoted to the handle 6- and suitably held in working relation to the ratchet wheel for the locking of the handle to prevent the turning thereof in one direction to resist the tension of the spring 7 when wound. i
When the spring 7 is wound by the turning of the handle in the reverse direction the said spring acts upon the gears 10 and 11 for the driving of the blade 15 across the working face of the housing 6 so that when the razor'is in use the blade will effect a.
-therefore a more extended explanation has 'I 100 been omitted.
What is claimed is A safety razor comprising a substantially equilateral triangular shaped housing hav' lng a guard formed in one straight side thereof, pulleys journaled interiorly of the housing an endless 4blade trained over the pulleys and having a sharpened edge mov' guard, a handle rotatably housing, a coiled mainable beneath the journaled inthe spring having one end fixed to the stem, a spring casing loosely journaled upon the The outer stretch vof the stem interiorly of the housing and having 4 gear connections between the casing an one of the pulleys, a ratchet wheel mounted on the stem, and a locking pawl pivoted tov the housing and engageable with the 'ratchet wheel to lock the stem against rotation in one direction.
