2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- (fl /7n KM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLOYD MONROUGH CRANK, OF CAMDEN, ARKANSAS.
AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT.
Application filed February 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FLOYD Moxnooorr CRANK, citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of ()uaehita and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Au-. tomatic Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in headlight attachments for automobiles, in particular, while it is equally applicable for like purposes on street cars, locomotives etc.
The invention has primarily for its object to provide for projecting or directing the light at all times ahead of the vehicle or machine.
A further object is to provide for controlling the angle of deflection of the projected rays of light.
A still further object is to provide for the separate or independent adjustment or movement of the head-lights, whereby one head light may be caused to throw its light-diizectly in front of the carwheels and" the other head light may be caused to throw its light at a greater or less angle, along the track. i
still further object is to provide for raising or lowering the head-lights as may be required in applying the head lights for use upon the vehicle.
A still further object is to carry out the aforesaid ends in a simple, effective and inexpensive manner and with facility.
The invention therefore consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction, substantially as hereinafter disclosed and defined by the appended claims.
in the accompanying drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit or scopeof the claims, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a vehicle of the automobile-type, partially mutilated, with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a f ont elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed vertical sectional view, more especially of one of the head-light supporting or attaching brackets or standards, and Figs. 5 and 6 represent a side. view, and an edge Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Serial No. 9,581.
view of the elongated slotted member, or link, respectively, of my device.
In carrying out my invention, I suitably support the head-lights 1, in usual position, at the front end of the vehicle or machine, upon rods 2, the upper ends of the latter being received by set-screw equipped apertured lugs or ears 3 on the head-lights, the set-screws being designated as 4 and whereby the .head-lights may be raised or lowered as may be desired.
The head-light carrying rods or supports 2, which may be formed with elastic cushioned shoulders or enlargements 5, extend through bored members or sleeves 6, the diametrically or laterally contracted lower end portions 6 of which sleeves 6 are received within ring-like or annular terminals 7 of swiveled sectional brackets 8 suitably pivoted in position, as at 9, laterally, upon the vehicle or machine. The annular or ring-like tern'iinals 7 of the swiveled brackets 8, are suitably connected or pinned as at 10 to the lower end portions (3 of the sleeves 6, while the rods 2 are suitably upheld within said sleeves said rods being provided with annular collars 11 clamped upon the upper ends of said sleeves by inverted cup-like washers 12 positioned upon said rods and engaging said collars 11, the lower annular portions of said washers being received within correspouding sockets 13 in said sleeves, and preferably pinned therein as at 14. The elastic cushioned lower ends of shoulders 5 of the headlight supporting rods 2 would relieve the head-lights of any violent concussion or jarring action should the latter casually drop from their normal position.
The supporting rods 2 are received at their lower ends within and preferably pinned as at 15 to annular terminals 16 of oscillating levers 17 preferably secured together in sections said levers having sleeved and slidable thereon arms 18, the latter having, in turn, sleeved thereon movable pendent arms or stems 19, whose lower ends are received or depend within the elongated, longitudinal slo s of links 20 carried by the radius member or yoke 21' having the usual arun-connections 22 with the steering wheel axles, as well understood, all of the foregoing being shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 3.
It will benobserved that by means of my invention, it being adapted to provide for controlling the position of the head-lights from the wheel-axles, such head-lights may be caused to throw or project their light at all times ahead of the vehicle or machine, also that by suitably adjusting the cam-arms 18 carried by the oscillating levers 17 the position of the head-lights may be to cause one head-light to throw its light directly in front of the car-wheels and the other head-light caused to throw its light at a greater or less angle along the track, all of which is thought apparent from the foregoing disclosure taken in connection with the accompanying illustration.
I claim- 1. A device of the type described, including a head-light and means for controlling said headlight from the steering wheel axles, comprising a rod-member carrying said head-light, sleeve and bracket-connection between said rod-member and he vehicle, an oscillating lever connected to said rod, an arm carried by said lever and slidable thereon, a link carried by the radius or yoke member of said steering wheel axles, and second pendent arm carried by the aforesaid arm and engaged by said link.
2. A device of the type described includ ing a head-lightfor vehicles and means for controlling the position thereof comprising a rod-member carrying the head-light a ln-acket-connection with a vehicle, a member sleeved upon said head-light carrying rod, a cup-like washer, suitable connection being provided between said head-light carrying rod-member and said sleeve-member and a bracket and pin connection between said sleeve-member and the vehicle.
In testimony whereof I aflix myvsignature in presence of two witnesses.
